Week 16 - Patriots at Bills Game Week Thread (Game at 4:25pm ET)

Just for kicks, I'd love to see the coaching staff call an aggressive defense the entire game.  Not having the safeties back off for 15-20 yards, some press coverage, more blitzes, the works.

 

It really feels like the philosophy has to change if we want to make a run in the playoffs. It doesn't have to be a wholesale makeover, but just up the ante.

Ok, so I just heard in the last 3 games where the Bills were favored by 10 or more points, they're 0-3 against the spread.

 

And... teams after playing the Lions are 3-10 against the spread.

 

Definitely feels like a very Billsy thing to stumble against a team they should just bulldoze. Right now they're -14.5 point favorites. Hopefully we can live up to that & not let off the gas.

I don't think it will be a blowout as division games are always different.

 

But will say like 27-17 or 30-17 Bills

It's curious, because I agree for sure, but also I suspect McDermott likes his coordinators these days to show THE LEAST they can and still get wins against lesser competition. I don't know if that's accurate, but they sure have rolled out some refreshingly aggressive and innovative game plans and play calls on both sides of the ball against the Chiefs and the Lions, for example. 

 

This would suggest that the Bills won't show many diverse or novel pressure looks on defense against the Pats and their rookie QB. 

 

Then again, sure seems like a good week to bring some heat, especially delayed/spy pressures from the 2nd and 3rd levels.

I haven't watched Drake Maye much or listened to McDermott's pressers this week. 

Historically McDermott exploits rookie QB.  He'll say stuff like "show me another QB that's playing better than Mac Jones right now" and then turn around and figure out how to bemuse and confuse them.  d

There are a couple QBs he's said something like "he sees the field extremely well, I don't think we'll be able to make him see ghosts"

 

I don't know what category Maye falls into

Well the pressers don't actually reveal anything, as you well know. And I also have not watched Maye outside of some game highlights. I think we all know he has a hose, and is big and athletic. But he also has a somewhat elongated release, and probably isn't always clear and decisive in his coverage reads. Maybe holds the ball at times. 

 

You're right that McD's Bills defenses have feasted on similar QB profiles, provided they can neutralize the Pats running game. I imagine that will be the focus Sunday: stopping the run to set up advantageous 3rd downs. My concern is that the Bills will be vulnerable to screens and slants and RPOs on 1st and 2nd downs. 

 

Maybe Ed Oliver decides to show up again this week and Maye is made to be uncomfortable from the drop. That's kind of the lurking X-factor. Individual matchups the Bills SHOULD win.

I've watched a medium amount of Maye this year. My highly amateur scouting report: He’s got big-time tools. Big frame, big arm, good wheels. Can make plays out of structure. He is currently a bad QB but is a gamer to some extent. Unlike Jac Mones, I could see Maye developing into a legit NFL QB someday. But right now, he’s part of the reason they’re losing. 
 

I’m expecting either our defense to confuse the heck out of him, or my boy AVP to come out with a crazy simplified game plan that takes all decision making out of his hands. Either way, Bills by a billion!

I know, but when the point is that when they're playing a significantly inferior team that everyone expects them to dominate, they often don't.

 

Not only that, but if you go back further the Bills have definitely had many games where they're double digit favorites & lose outright. That's a sign they don't always take these games seriously or just get outplayed by inferior teams.

Greg Cosell said he’s a big fan of Maye and suggests he could be the best QB in the draft.

 

He also said the NE offensive line is totally abysmal.
