Niners scorn 'selfish' De'Vondre Campbell's refusal to play

As I've seen pointed out elsewhere:

This is a PARTICULARLY egregious situation, because of the specifics of that 49ers team.

Ward coming back after the death of his daughter. Trent Williams coming back after the death of his son. Multiple guys battling injury to get onto the field. An absolute MUST-HAVE game against a division opponent.

This is different than retiring at halftime early in the season. This was BAD. The 49ers are right to cut ties with him immediately, and the only reason he hasn't been cut yet is that Shanahan says they're working through it to evaluate all their options (suspension vs release, contract money related things).

Whether or not Campbell realizes it, he likely just put an end to his NFL playing career.

On local sports radio in SF, they speculated it wasn't because he was moved to be a backup to Greenlaw, whom he knew in advance was returning from injury later this season, but because he was also put him behind Dee Winters, who was third-string. He had commented earlier in the year that he didn't want to be behind him. He suited up before the game only because he gets a roster bonus for each game he suits up for.

 

They also said someone told him to head to the locker room in the 4th because things might have gotten ugly between him and the other players, but it wasn't Shanahan who told him to leave (e.g., see how Kittle was pissed).

They were 100% in the game, too. 

 

I assume they told him to go home and not come back while they figure out how to handle it in terms of contract?

mental health of the players needs to be taken seriously by the NFL.   We have no idea what the players are going through and questioning their "unusual" decisions is beyond our means.

I had that thought as well. Guy is 31 years old. Who knows how the hits have added up in his brain. But it's telling how quickly and thoroughly his teammates threw him under the bus for his selfish act. I doubt they'd be so quick to bury him if they thought he was going through some type of mental health or personal crisis.

The 49ers culture has taken a beating this season. This Campbell situation is awful, Deebo was being a Diva and complaining and Aiyuk earlier in the season wasnt he giving them troubles and sounding off in the media?

Can you imagine being this guy's poor kid someday?  "your dad is a ******* quitter"  and tons more.

 

These idiots don't understand the implications of their actions. And I agree with others, it should end his NFL career.
