If they aren't actively involved, I'm willing to bet they know who is, and based on some of the reports, there seems to be a reasonable assumption that there is at the very least a safety issue relative to shared airspace, if not an actual national security concern. Which to me at least, begs the question; why isn't more being said/done? I'm trying to come up with a reasonable explanation and I keep coming back to some commercial grade testing or some hobbiests having a lark.

I don't think its an airspace conflict issue or there would be far more action. The FAA would be far more aggressive if there was conflict.

It's hard for an untrained, casual observer to tell direction, size, etc. They may not be over an airport for example. You probably being a flyer saw they finally determined the navy videos of the UFOs around San Diego were likely explainable via parallax effect.
