It used to be much better understood. I don't know if it was also the players. I remember Bledsoe did an interview talking about a game, maybe the Minnesota game that was a shootout, and describing how he ran the clock to his plan. Coaches used to be good at it, too. Kicking is awful, running is inconsistent, time management is gone, game time scenarios are not planned, the league is becoming backyard football. This is where Reid has an advantage because of his tenure and his ability to solely focus on the offense. Quote

Freddie's Dead Posted December 10 Posted December 10 McDummy somehow lacks the organizational wherewithal to get the correct number of players on the field for critical plays, to understand which plays to challenge and when, and to understand clock management. He doesn't have any issues when the Bills are blowing out or being blown out by the other team. He only chokes in the close games. He "gets the apple" when it counts the most. 13 seconds was by far the most egregious of these. But last year we had the Denver game, with a brutally stupid challenge that cost us a timeout we desperately needed. This year we have the Texans and the Rams game, where bad decisions took away the opportunity for us to win. A poster upthread correctly pointed out that these poor decisions did not COST us the game. But what they did cost us was the opportunity to win the game. I'm concerned that in the playoffs, where the margins will be razor thin, McDummy will make another bad decision that will cost us yet another opportunity at the Lombardi. My biggest fear is that we will waste the career of the best QB to play the game, all because the coach was not worthy of him. I'll be more than happy to be wrong, but I don't think I am. 1 1 Quote

US Egg Posted December 10 Posted December 10 (edited) Footballs structure makes last minute/seconds decision making so intense and dramatic, dare say the most in team sports. Many coaches crack. It's definitely a big part of the games appeal. Edited December 10 by US Egg Quote
BananaB Posted December 10 Posted December 10 (edited) Holding 3 timeouts when down a score, minute on the clock and about to kick the ball back to the opposing team is as basic as it gets. If the Bills need a guy to that I’ll do it for airfare and the price of admission Edited December 10 by BananaB 1 Quote

In fact, he might be elite in these respects. However, he sucks at time management. If a specialist can convert just one loss into a win, isn't it worth their salary? The Bills have already brought in an an expert on challenges; bring in an expert on clock management and let McDermott continue what he does well. In fact, I wonder if in a few years hiring specialists for play challenges and clock management will be a league-wide practice. It's only "a major part of the job description" if the Bills want it that way. Besides, the final decision is still McDermott's. But this way, he doesn't have to rely on his piss-poor judgment in crunch time. Doesnt seem to fit into regular operations though. A Replay/Review specialist works because they can independently watch the tape and buzz down to the HC. What would a clock specialist do to help against the Rams? How and when would they be chiming in McD's ear to remember that they should only pass on that play since an incomplete pass stops the clock? They would have to be interrupting the conversation between McD and Brady, and stepping on the play calls, etc. This is something coaches should just "know". Yes, it is tricky. But that is why they've been given the $$$. Quote

Robert Paulson Posted December 10 Posted December 10 During the summer when no players are around it would be great if the brain trust could have a retreat and play out end of game situations and how they would approach it. You can't envision every scenario but you should be able to cover enough that you instantly review your checklist and act accordingly. Now if McDermott has done this and still makes the incorrect decision vs the 10 drunks around my tv then he has to go. Quote

But that is why they've been given the $$$. Agreed. But the Bills' situation might be unique: A HC who is elite in two key respects (culture and teaching) but deficient in game management. Do you fire him and risk all that he's built? Or do you find a way to deal with the logistics you describe? It would mean McDermott swallowing his pride, that's for sure. He'd be the first HC in league history standing on the sidelines with nothing much to do except clap. Quote
