@BADOLBILZ

Bruce Young was the #1 OVERALL player in his class by some

5'10 in shoes

Jackson Arnold top 5 prospect class of 23... 6'1 probably with cleats

Talking five-star guys with below average size now because they're pumping out athletes with arm strength and athleticism

Wow. Bill is doing it

I think it’s awesome.  Whether he succeeds or fails it’s gonna be must-watch-stuff.

If he brings a pro style office to the NCAA with that guy who helped him in New England then it will be interesting. To get a staff that will scout recruit and do all of that so he doesn't have to necessarily would be huge. I wonder why more colleges don't do this, and now that everybody is just about the money that's about all that matters

Where you say "he couldnt win without Brady", I say "no one can win with Mac Jones".

Even the best/your favorite coaches... swap Mac Jones in for Josh and McD isnt winning. Swap McCorkle in for Mahomes and Reid isnt winning. Swap him in for Goff and Campbell/Johnson arent winning.

It's both. You need the coach and the QB.

Even Brady needed Arians to win another SB, and didnt do nearly as well once he pushed Bruce out of the HC spot.

I agree with everything you said, but there’s also nothing to show that Belichick can build a team from scratch. He was GM in New England, and it didn’t go well. Why are we assuming he can identify talent? Let alone recruit players as a grumpy 73 year old. I agree, you can’t win with Mac Jones, but there’s also nothing in Bill’s past that proves he can lift a mediocre team. He might be the GOAT, but he’s a coach coming out of retirement at 70 plus. When has that ever been successful?

Building a college team and scouting high school recruits is a 100% completely different process than building an NFL team.

He wont be stuck always picking in the 30s in the college draft, because there isnt one. He can go and recruit any kid he wants (whether they commit or not is a different story, but point is it's equal access). Plus, you dont have to "hit" on players as much since there are so many of them, and its a much deeper, wider talent pool. It's only in that step to the pros that so many get filtered out.

Coming out of retirement - after taking only 1 year off. It's not like he retired at 65 and has been away from the game for 8 years. And I believe college football history is littered with old coaches going back for one more try and having decent success. Heck, Mack Brown just did that exactly at UNC, but to a lesser extent because while he is a good coach, he is no Belichick. Mack as more willing to just work with what the school would give him. Belichick has a plan to step it up to a top-tier program.

Again, it might tank. Anything could happen. But I get why folks at UNC could believe that it will work, as long as they are willing to pony up.

He likely saw SMU buy their way into the ACC and then a year later is in the CFP.

Now, he won’t always have the cake schedule SMU had this year avoiding the top 4 conference teams, but in the era of NIL (and it sounds like he’ll have a ton of money to throw around), he can easily snag a top portal QB, buy some OL/DL and skill positions and immediately challenge for a playoff spot if he hits.

Yep, thanks to the inept idiots at the NCAA, college football is just a highest bidder booster competition now.

My wife works remotely from western NY for a small hospital in Boone, NC that was gobbled up by UNC last year.  I guess that makes her and Bellichick co-workers.  Should be a fun Christmas party.

It doesn't happen often because most high school players want to be recruited by head coaches themselves

Or assistant coaches

That's how you got the best players...

When I was scouting for college programs.. I would go to games or camps... Compile my notes from films or interviews

Give the list of kids to the head coach and assistant coach who is typically the head recruiter... Then they would pursue the kids

Go to their parents house.. chat the parents up... Get them comfortable with the program.. bring them on campus

Most four star or five star kids want to be lured by the head coach or the coordinator they'll be playing for

Bill belichick is the one guy who I think could make it work without it

A few notes-

coming out of retirement might not be 100%. He tried to find a gig and is now taking one of the very first opportunities since he and the pats parted ways

i imagine there aren’t many examples of successes - or failures- to look at for guys taking jobs in their 70

i suspect he dictates a lot more in process and structure instead of day to day scouting here

last up, the afc east is much tougher than the acc

As a UNC fan this makes me sad.  I think it has epic fail written all over it - and selling your soul and the whole program over to a cheating POS human who is sure to take off as soon as things go slightly sideways.  Maybe when he moves I'll drive over to Chapel Hill and egg his house.

Bill’s girlfriend wanted to get accepted at UNC.
is he doing this to fit in with his girlfriend group?

I half joke. I don’t see it in his personality to teach like this

It's hard to know what will happen but I'm a Purdue alum.  If the Boilermakers just hired him, I'd be giddy with hope.  And I'm not the giddy type.

This is so wild to me. Greatest coach of all time goes to coach college football at a basketball school? At 72 years old? Seems like a terrible fit for both sides. But good for him for taking on the challenge I guess.
