I understand but there are more things in life than money.

On the flip side( I love arguing with myself) college basketball is not nearly as popular as it was 20 years ago even for teams like Kentucky, UNC, Duke and certainly teams from the former BigEast

You and I can say that. But a college board of trustees watching their peers rake in Tens, if not Hundreds, of Millions of dollars more for their school changes things.

The amount of money available to be made in College Football makes that tough

He didnt make that position up tho. Most big programs already have that guy in place.

Good doctor, I've known that for a long time - just about 5 minutes now.  I had to ask AI about college GMs and found out, for example, that Andrew Luck is the football GM at Stanford.

AI tells me it's a new and growing trend.  And while in the NFL the HC often works for the GM, in college it's the other way around.  Which fits Belichick perfectly.

Maybe this is why he didn't get an NFL gig this past year, because of this Belicheat Manifesto of his.

This seems like a lot for a college program to commit to. I'd almost expect them to turn him down.

do you think he would do well there? i mean do you think he could get a program like UNC to a championship?

On the heels of this news, if I were a recruit it would be Colorado or NC.

Bill as a college coach would attract an insane plethora of talent.  Purely from his NFL connections and understanding of the NFL workings, if my kid was choosing a school it would be NC in a heartbeat.  If it doesn't work after a season or two, you transfer to another school and move on.

I am surprised he would go to college. I figured he wants to catch Shula for most wins by an NFL HC.

Agreed. This could be the ol’ drought era FA-visits-with-the-Bills-for-leverage play.

If I'm UNC, I say no.

They are a basketball school with a decent football program. UNC is an excellent academic school.

Stay in your lane and be who you are.

Chasing some football success threatens your core identity.

It's not worth it

You sound like one of UNC's "blue blood" trustees who think "we're better than that."

UNC is an NCAA powerhouse in many sports...they are indeed on the level of the best athletic schools in the country.  They need to commit to bringing the football program to where it can and should be, because football dwarfs everything else now.

It would seem that he has realized that his chances of getting the type of job he wants in the NFL next season is low, and he still has a passion for coaching.

Imagine how much it would add to his already legendary legacy if he turned UNC into a college powerhouse? Or if he added a National Championship to his resume?

I could see him somewhat revolutionizing the way modern college teams run their programs. Talk of a sitting college GM, pay structures, prioritizing preparing players for the NFL, etc.

Lastly, I'd guess the "setting his son up to be his guaranteed successor" is a big part of it, too. The ability to set his son up for success would be a logical final move for his coaching career.

You are correct, University of Connecticut found this out the hard and ugly way, UConn is a Basketball School, and dammed successful at it, they spent a huge amount of money trying to be a football school and have been very unsuccessful in the attempt,

It makes sense as he’s not getting back into the NFL.  He’s 72.  This nonsense he’ll fix the Bills is just that, nonsense.  He can recruit just by his name for several years, and then retire into the sunset.  I only hope I’m not taking on a new job at 72, unless it’s a gym greeter like one of my buddies just to get out of the house.  He works a couple days a week and opens my gym at 5.  He gets a free membership, and does it just to get out.  Personally, I think his wife made him take the job to get out of the house.

Its Belicheck, He wouldn't commmit to a college team that's looking to improve its football program unless they were willing to go all in. He doesn't want to be a shiny trophy on the mantle, he wants to be successful and will only commit if they commit.

I agree with Belicheck's demands even though I do not know what they are. You want a legendary NFL coach to turn your program around, well you better be willing to commit the necessary resources.

Interesting question.

I think the fact that he wants to build it out as a "Pipeline to the NFL" makes it very attractive to recruits. I think he'll be able to stand with any other coach he goes against.

The (unfortunate) biggest factor nowadays tho is NIL money. So whether he can do it or not will really depend on how much boosters are willing to pony up to help him get his recruits.

SMU boosters finally got their chance to legally pay players and they are in the Playoffs 1 year later. So it can be done.

edit to add:

With Saban retired, Belichick would be my top choice of "Coach I trust with my kid". If I'm a parent of a recruit, I'm pushing for Belichick over guys like Ryan Day, Brian Kelly, etc.

UNCs endowment is 5.1B, UConn’s is 0.6B.

I get it. I would choose a different path but I understand where you and others are coming from.
