I suspect Ed is playing hurt

lol you got eye rolled for this comment as if you said something so out of the realm of possibility. Eye rolls are such useless contributions. Just makes me laugh sometimes.

Happy Birthday Ed - still only 27, so you could say he should be in the peak of his career right now …

However … that’s clearly not how he is playing , and I dont know about you, but  Ive starting looking at Ed’s contract and when they can cut bait … spoiler alert - it won’t be in 2025 ..

Some people are saying he needs a good Tackle beside him …. But that certainly wasn’t the case last year when Jones was injured and Ed turned in his best season … perhaps they should be looking on the other side of him for explanations for his play this season , with Floyd being  replaced with AJE…

AJE has been disappointing no doubt … I actually thought his contract was reasonable value … but he is just a depth rotational piece.., Im  still leaning to  keep him in the last year of the deal as at least we know what he is instead of them trying to throw a fourth rounder in there and hoping for the best first up …maybe do both … Having said that though …. Ed gets paid three times what AJE gets paid, so I’m going to scrutinise Ed more closely, and have bigger expectations for him ..

I think Beane needs to swing as big as he can to get a decent starter at AJE’s position  in this next free  Agency … just get someone a bit younger than Von this time .. I would also be taking a swing at drafting Ed’s eventual replacement this off-season with one of those three Top 60 picks they have next draft …at least that move might send Ed a very clear message with the new guy and Carter battling with him to pull his finger out or move on …

Ive also had a look at Jones contract and it looks tough to get out of in 2025… i would still be looking to draft someone relatively early in 2025 to be his planned replacement in 2026 , and even beat him out mid season next year if they get really lucky ..

I would also prefer to see a little more consistency from Rousseau before you extend him at $20mil plus a year … but I expect them to make that move this off-season ..although I don’t know if it makes sense to pay both Edges at the same time ? Maybe could work out if you have both the DTs on rookie deals from 2026?

Says he is playing the same , but qbs getting ball out too quick so nothing he can do.  Well how bout putting your arms up , jumping, getting some tipped balls?   You, Ed , are doing nothing and just giving up.  Doesn’t explain other teams also running at will at crucial times snd their best games seem to always be about facing this d.   It’s just no accountability and with the money , he now faces no benching , and he just plays with no urgency or like he wants to keep proving he could keep improving.    The whole d line plays that way outside of epenesa who has some days where he does well despite his limited talents.

This is Beanes biggest failure every year , failed fas, failed at the draft    This is why it’s hard to maintain faith Mcd will bring a Lombardi home , as you combine this d line with terrible decision making under pressure and his scheme of 2 small lbs with always playing scared , soft zone allowing WRs to come of line untouched.  It’s hasn’t worked in 7 years.  Josh with his best and another anazing year , but I suspect it will be waisted. Come on, 9 guys on the field with no returner , and a blocked punt in the same game with yet another botched time out use. It’s now an anomaly, it’s a pattern. Detroit game will be a clue , not optimistic as this team is used to choking at end games , ot. But even a win can’t prevent another playoff debacle.   Hope I’m wrong , but it feels like mcds penchant for errors in close games , feels like we will waste what appeared to be a magical season. Prove me wrong Mcd ,or we can just repeat this until Josh has gotten well past his prime.

He's having a pretty rough year this year.  The splash plays are what you have him for - be it pressures, sacks, stops, TFLs, whatever.  And he just isn't doing it enough.  Will he occasionally blow up a play and get.. basically no credit for it?  Yes.  But I've watched every snap this year and he's not doing it consistently enough.

They dont bring back phillips and jefferson if they're happy with his performance.

Ed is worst ROI . 9th overall pick, big contract for invisible man with several tackles per season. Even his best seasons with good flashes he was average NFL player, not wow

Ed Oliver has been a favorite of mine to get his 2nd contract for generational money prior to last season. Now after a pro bowl season where he had his most productive performance, he has regressed and has been a huge disappointment this season. One sack and a small amount of tackles won’t get it done. Ed has to show up if we want to get to the promised land. I think if he doesn’t show up this season the Bills have to take  the trade route with him because he’s been healthy and it’s his commitment and desire that are in question.

Hes basically a pass rush specialist 3T that has seen his pass rushing fall off a cliff.

too undersized to do much else consistently.

Hes not getting doubled at a high rate. A few years ago it was 55%. This year feels like less. A player getting paid like he does drawing single teams simply needs to win those favorable matchups more.

He doesn’t. Hes just not that good. Even when we played the Ravens, they let him penetrate a bit and wash himself out of the play.

Another “fine” NFL player drafted and paid to be a star.

Common theme.

In what world is Calais Campbell a 1 tech?

I was referring to a replacement for Oliver.  A 3 tech that can actually dominate someone.

This may be nuts but if possible I would not mind signing a dt free agent for the playoffs.  Lure Fletcher Cox or anyone big, strong that can disrupt.  I worry someone will run all over us in the playoffs.

Yeah, those trap plays tend to require an aggressive linebacker and that ravens game had spector in that spot who.. we'll say was "not aggressive enough" .

He got paid and then learned from the school of Albert Haynesworth. That's what happened.

sorta like Marcell Dareus?

Bills have a collection of 6-guys at DT and none of them are that great.

There's kind of a causal relationship there.  McDermott strongly believes in a DL rotation.  That means instead of keeping 2 top-notch guys who play almost every snap and 2 backups who can play, you're trying to keep 4 top-notch guys and 2 backups who can play.  Except you can't keep and pay 4 top-notch guys, so you wind up with 4 OK-to-good guys.

Marino noted the stunts that were helping Ed’s production last year are way down this year. Maybe Babich is saving for January.

No way thats the case, so the question is why are they not stunting as much?? Did he have any possible reasons for this?

One of Ed’s worst reps that sticks in my mind was a 4th and 5 versus the Dolphins in the 2nd matchup. Tua ended up rushing for the first down and on the play Daquan was doubled and Oliver was singled. Ed was getting manhandled by the guard and even jumped in the air to try to disengage from him. Still couldn’t. Ed looked like a JV player wrestling his dad, I was surprised how easily he was controlled.

My guess is that it isn’t as much as saving it for January as it is game plan specific. For example, you may stunt less if you’re playing a mobile QB, or if you feel you can overpower the OL to collapse a pocket quicker. I am not going to pretend to know the specifics for gaming planning purposes but I imagine saving themselves for January isn’t really a necessity. There are really only so many games to be played up front and by January the OLs have likely seen them all (even if not from the Bills)
