He’s been nearly invisible. He rarely gets doubled and still can’t penetrate or get off blocks. Very disappointing.

We really need to do something about the size of our defensive players.  6-1 and 290 is tiny for a DT.  I would bet that makes him the smallest starting DT in the league.  Behind him are three small LBs.  Bernard has to be the smallest starting MLB.  It’s one to have one small player here or there.  It’s another to have small tiny players at every front 7 position.  We just can’t overcome it

It’s strange for a team that values “measureables” so much. I get going small and fast at linebacker, but if there’s one position where they need size, it’s defensive tackle.

While I realize those guys don't grown on trees and are hard to find, can you imagine how good this defense would be if we had Phat Pat and Ted Washington at DT.  With all other pieces being the same?

I realize a "penetrating DT" is really ideal, but massive fat guys can work almost as well IMHO.  If they took up 3 OL on every play, rest of the defense can simply fly to the ball.  I would really advocate trading for Dexter Lawrence and draft the fattest DT we can find early.

Last year, after he signed his big deal, he seemed to be walking around with a chip on his shoulder.  I got the impression, that he heard all the chatter, questioning whether or not he deserved/earned that deal.  Doesn't seem to be playing with that same chip on his shoulder.  Last year, it seemed like the Bills correctly projected what he would be.  This year, Ed seems to be validating the doubts that the naysayers had.  Hopefully he turns it on down the stretch, but idk.

Again, he was very good last season, which was post-contract.

If you watch the all 22 he was awesome.

But I'm concerned a little that he has disappeared for large parts of this year. I'm almost certain he was dealing with an injury earlier in the year.

I don't agree with that at all

And….

Rebuttal….

Oliver had 1 tackle and zero sacks against KC.  @Kelly to Allen's idea of elite I guess is a little different?

He did play pretty well against KC. I think elite is a stretch. His best game this year was Seattle IMO. But he played decent vs KC, Tennessee and the first Miami game. The other 7 he has played he has simply not been good enough for a player of his ability.

Or if they had gone out and grabbed Campbell rather than letting the Dolphins do it.  There were modern day fixes available.

In what world is Calais Campbell a 1 tech?

the solution for our DL is the same as it is for offensive playmaker -- we need a great DL player.  A great player makes players around him better because of his impact.  Oliver is the picture of a guy who can never do that.  Von was a guy like that many years and two knees ago.  I'm ambivalent between DT or DE, we just need someone on the DL who is so disruptive and skilled that it changes how the whole unit is blocked.  Maybe Crosby is available for a 1st and one of our seconds in the off season?  We need a stud in the stable.

Cuz he's big, kidding of course but most people think if a guy is bigger there automatically should be able to two gap which we should know better from watching Jordan Phillips the last few years.

Why because you have been wrong for 5 years so you are going to claim this bad year as victory?

My hope is that he's had some sort of nagging injury and that he'll return to form as an above average player at some point.  Right now,  I think it's the worst contract on the roster by a decent margin.

Matt Parrino talked to Oliver after practice. Here were Oliver's comments:

Quote

I think I had two quarterback hits last game. I can't do nothing about the ball being out fast and I didn't have quarterback hits right at two seconds, the ball is gone. I'm hitting the quarterback and the ball is just gone. I can't do anything about that. All I can do is keep rushing.

Everybody wants the numbers. I would like to be sitting at seven or eight sacks just like I was last year, but that's just not the case right now. So, as for me, which is a little bit frustrating, but I got to stick with my process and come to work every day and be the same guy every day, even though I might be a little frustrated about the numbers. I mean numbers is numbers. But I can't change and I can't start being selfish because I'm chasing something that's not team-oriented.

For me right now is to continue to play team ball just as I did last year when the numbers were big. I mean, the numbers are not that big this year, but I have to continue to unselfishly play for the team. And I can't just go out there and, oh, I want this and that, and selfishly go out there and put myself out of position, put us in a position to get gashed and things like that.

Gotta say I'm not a big fan of this response. Sounds very much like he's not taking any responsibility for his poor play this year, instead choosing to blame the players and the scheme around him.

This is honestly the only reasonable explanation. I am hoping we see the reverse for him from years past. He turns it on in the playoffs and makes his presence known.

What I don't like is that the biggest problem IS the team stuff not the glory plays.   He's been bad against the run this season.   That's effort and execution that he's typically able to turn into results in run D.  Ed Oliver tries hard in games but that effort might not be backed up with the right strength and conditioning this year.  It's my contention is that me might not have put in the work in the offseason like he should have.   When you try to get in shape in season.......sometimes you get injuries early and then can never get to the baselines that made him dynamic.
