He was absolutely elite vs KC. So idk.

He obviously has the talent

Very interesting to see how this dline does vs an outstanding lions oline

Makes me sad. I saw him have a couple nice plays during one 15 minute span-  other than that- another game not living up to his potential.  Was hoping he would build on last season and become part of the 2nd tier of DTs.  Instead he’s playing like he’s tier 4.  Or maybe 7.

I'm not sure if it's coaching, if it's the 1-Tech beside him not producing, or if it's due to him not having Floyd beside him drawing attention. Whatever it is, it looks like he's taken a couple steps back this year.

A couple? He's been the invisible man's after having a good year last year....

He doesn’t have the tools needed to overcome the fact that he is undersized.

quickness, handfighting, etc…

I'm curious...what makes you say that?

I felt this deserved its own thread given his draft position and his contract, but mods, if you think it should be merged with the d-line thread, that's fine.

Oliver has only eight tackles this season (through 13 games, although he missed two) and had 34 last season. He has one sack, two TFLs, and 8 QB hits. He had 9.5 sacks last year and 14 TFLs.  What the hell has happened to him? He's arguably the worst producer on the entire defense this season - definitely worse than Daquon Jones.

And I don't buy any "he does the dirty work" sort of argument. 3-technique DTs are supposed to explode through and make actual tackles in the backfield.

He’s also allowed his fair share of explosive runs.

Joe Marino just said it best:

Maybe it’s time we accept that guys like Oliver, Epenesa, Jones, and Miller are just below average-to-average players with Groot being slightly above average.

I think this is mostly fair, perhaps a bit pessimistic because we're coming off such a bad game (Rousseau played as poorly as I've seen). I mean did Groots girlfriend break up with him or something?

When he was drafted I always thought he was going to be moved to DE due to his size and used in a roll like Richard Seymour. On light passing downs you could bump him inside. The only reason he is able to fill a dt roll is because he is super strong and quick. I struggle to understand the ick with how they keep using him.

If you watch the all 22 he was awesome.

But I'm concerned a little that he has disappeared for large parts of this year. I'm almost certain he was dealing with an injury earlier in the year.

I don't agree with that at all

We really need to do something about the size of our defensive players.  6-1 and 290 is tiny for a DT.  I would bet that makes him the smallest starting DT in the league.  Behind him are three small LBs.  Bernard has to be the smallest starting MLB.  It’s one to have one small player here or there.  It’s another to have small tiny players at every front 7 position.  We just can’t overcome it

I'm with the consensus.  The defense, particularly the defensive line and especially the tackles are disappointing this season.  The departure of Washington as D-line coach is the biggest single change, so maybe that is the cause.  It's probably not going to change significantly this season, but it's going to need lots of attention in the off season.
