Carry on with Over Reaction Monday, though I realize this is different. We win so much this hatred gets bottled up then finally gets released like a volcano popping off.

NO IT ISNT. Please dont strawman me and purposely mis-state what I've already spent multiple posts clarifying for you.

I am curious at how big a scheme shift most people here are looking for though so this should be an interesting discussion.  It’s definitely not impossible to limit the roster turnover.  Definitely didn’t go well for the dolphins as the Texans though lol

All good on the previous stuff. Happens to the best of us

WRT change of D scheme, roster turn over, and even the Dolphins...

Like I said up-thread, we need a pretty big overhaul on Defense even if McD stays. Cut Von, cut Jones, add a few DL, a couple of CBs, and with the question mark hanging over Milano maybe some work on LBs as well. All 3 layers. So we arent adding much to Beane's plate either way. It's already full.

Regardless of scheme, I think we re-sign Groot and Benford since they can play in any defense.

With the Dolphins, funny enough, they had already used all their draft capital from the Tunsil trade before McDaniel arrived. And while they had Wilkins, Jones, VanGinkel in place, idiotically let most of those players walk THIS PAST offseason in order to throw more money at Tua, Waddle, and Hill. So the turnover had little/nothing to do with the coaching change, and was just bad GMing that steams from bad ownership.

And while I dont love the Tampa-2, it isnt the scheme I have the problem with. It is the coaching and decision making when push comes to shove and we get in tricky situations. Doesnt matter what scheme we are running if the coach doesnt know how to manage time outs. That is my real beef.

ALLLLL this said, no way does Terry fire McD so none of this discussion matters at all. But it is a fun/interesting way to kill a Monday at work.

I absolutely would NOT want BB to be our head coach.  McDermott isn't perfect but we can do far worse than him (People said the same things that are being said about McDermott now, about Andy Reid during his time in Philly).  Some people it just takes time and as long as we have Josh, we need to continue with McDermott.

That said, I would absolutely love the idea of Belichek coming to Buffalo as an interim special teams coach.  Smiley is garbage and should be fired.  This would be an interesting move and a lesson in accountability.  I wonder if BB would think such a move would be beneath him- a temporary job and a chance to add another SB to his resume?  Special teams have been a nightmare for us this year and I think BB would be an improvement and add accountability to that part of the locker room.

Andy Reid was a head coach for 20 years before winning a Super Bowl. Let’s have a little perspective here.

the “fire him” takes are ridiculous.

I wonder if it has ever happened before...

that a 10-3 team, who has already locked up the playoffs, and locked up their division earlier than any team in 16 years, who has gone to the playoffs 7 of the last 8 years, and has an 68-24 record over the last 6 years (good for a 74% win percentage), who are currently 2nd in the league in scoring, are 7th in the league in points against (despite the Rams' 44 points yesterday), and are still 2nd in point differential...has their fans calling to fire their head coach. Especially when many of those same fans were calling this a rebuilding year and expecting 8-9 wins tops, possibly missing the playoffs.

I hope you all realize how foolish that looks, especially to other fans/the outside world. There are probably at least 26 fan bases that wish they had it as bad as we do. And if the Bills were to go on to win a Super Bowl this year (obviously no guarantee, but if...), you guys would look even sillier. And McDermott, if fired, would be hired immediately by another team and bring success there (maybe not to this level, depending on his QB, but still...).

It was our first loss in 8 weeks. We just came off of beating both of last year's Super Bowl representatives, sealing our division in the process. Yes, our defense gave up a lot of points to a very talented and desperate team, but we still only lost by 2 points. I mean, seriously, what are you guys complaining about.

As for Belichick, no way. First off, I don't want his culture. I love the culture that McDermott and Beane have established. Secondly, I don't want to win a Super Bowl by renting a coach and some stud players for one or two years. I want the Buffalo Bills to win a Super Bowl. And then there is the question of his age and is he past it. Plus, he's a defensive coach...isn't that some of people's issues with McD? And what if he comes in for like 2 years and can't get it done, he retires, and we're searching for a new coach who will change things up again and who knows what our team looks like or how long it takes us just to get back to the level we are already at. Stability is a real thing in the NFL. And even with Belichick, there are no guarantees to win a Super Bowl. It's the NFL.

Belicheat is a throwback from the 80’s and 90’s.  Strong defense and rushing game.  The game has passed him.  He’s great as an analyst and enjoy his perspectives, but I don’t want a 72 yr old coach who is an autocrat.

I don’t hate the guy anymore, but moving on as this apparently is way overreaction Monday.  We’ve won 7 in a row sometimes, I , and this is what comes out the next day.

Sometimes, I fell like so many on this board has had amnesia over the 17 yr. Drought.  McD has built a good team and gelling, but our defense faltered yesterday.  It happens.  I hated losing when I played football and wrestled, or didn’t win the US championships in powerlifting.  I did and for 24 hrs., I felt like I failed.  You move on, and let it go.  The Texans was an anomaly after the brutal loss to Baltimore.  We can beat the Lions if we pull it back together which is what typically happens in a McD led team.

FWIW, I went to bed pissed (sorry mods, but don’t know how to express otherwise the way I felt like probably you).  Moving on.  Onto Detroit.  I’ve always found it’s best not to dwell, and just front face focused as is our team.

Also, if Belicheat was our coach, I’m focused moving forward on the Bucs and go back to the Bills after he’s fired.  I don’t have to worry about it as Terry would never ina million years fire McD for Belicheck.

I definitely don't think Belichick is the answer but we still have to find someone to solve the coaching problem. The defense has been bullied by everyone but bottom feeders for too damn long. Soft zones are for soft coaches and players. I'm so goddamn sick of watching them give up the run over and over and pray to God they hold the opponent to a FG or force a miracle turnover.

The whole “13 seconds” thing was then. This is now. People who can’t get over that may need therapy. We can all get better at our jobs over time.

We should always just "get over" all his mistakes because as sure as the day is long, there will be more down the road. The problem with Sean is he doesn't learn from his mistakes. He doesn't get better at his job. I think the only people that need therapy are the lemmings that keep supporting him after moronic games.

Do you think he’s better at his job now  than he was when he arrived at the Bills?

That's one of the things he wants if he agrees to take the UNC job.   He wants Stephen to be named HC in waiting.   Which makes sense for recruiting because every other HC is going to be recruiting against BB's age.   Ideally you want to know who is going to be the man in 4 years.

Makes zero sense to demand that at the NFL level.   I think you are conflating the two.

Here's my thought process (and it could be way out there, but to me it makes sense):

1. It might explain his interest in coaching at the college level, at NC nonetheless, which he has never done. His son being named coach in waiting is going to be a lot harder sell at the NFL level, and might preclude him getting an NFL job if its truly something he sticks to.

2. He's done it before with NE and Mayo, so there is precedent to Belichick being involved with these types of deals in the NFL. You can't tell him it won't work, because he saw it first hand and was involved in it.

3. It was weird that he interviewed a couple of times with Atlanta and it didn't work out because THEY apparently said no thanks in favor of a guy who has a proven track record of being just OK. It very well could be that Bill made this demand and Atlanta just didn't want to go that far.

4. It might also explain his lack of other interviews. Mike Mularkey landed 3 HC jobs! 3! This is Belichick we're talking about. But if word got out that he wants his son as heir apparent then it could muddle things. It's one thing to take a shot with a HOF coach, but if it goes sideways then you are contractually obligated to the son. Tons of risk. Uncomfortable. Messy.

5. He interviews for a college gig as a message to potential NFL suitors: he's serious about this, and if you want him you need to accept his son as HC in training. Otherwise, he goes to the college ranks instead. You won't be able to strongarm him by saying "we want you but not your son as HC in waiting, and if you really want to coach..."

6. It could also create the impression that others are ok with this arrangement, so if you want BB you need to go along.

Just my thoughts, in no particular order.

You know this to me true?  How?

not doubting it, but I haven’t heard that before.  I do doubt that any team would ever agree to that

It's apparently his demand in the UNC process this year, and it sort of makes sense why there wasn't more interest in him last hiring cycle in the NFL if it was his demand then too.

Ole Bill is haunted by the fact that Don Shula has more NFL wins with 328 and he has 302 and that's why he wants back as an NFL HC in the worst way.

George Halas is also ahead of him at 318. The funny thing is Andy Reid is at 270.

No NFL owner will hire the man after he went to the Patriots owner Robert Kraft and told him that Tom Brady was washed up. Brady then goes on to win a Super Bowl with his next team and this along with so many other screwups with the team got him fired by a man who loved him.
