Agreed.

The Bills have the 6th ranked scoring defense in the league. Over the past 3 games, they've given up an average of 17 points per game.

I don't think McDermott and Babich will be eager to swap out one of the two starters at safety for a guy who hasn't played football in a year.

If the safety play starts to decline or injures strike? Sure. Otherwise, I think some people are letting what they WANT to see happen cloud their judgement in terms of what is actually LIKELY to happen.

Agree with this, but keep in mind that neither Hamlin nor Rapp can touch Hyde’s knowledge of how to play safety in this defense. So if it gets to a point where Hyde is back in game shape, and at that point he’s tied physically with Hamlin? Then Hyde would look like a clear upgrade, or at least a gamble worth taking.

With the info available to us outsiders, I’ll be ready for either “Hyde never sees the field”, or “Hyde starts every playoff game and plays 100% of defensive snaps.” I think I’d be more surprised by something in between those two (barring injury of course).

No way he's an upgrade over Rapp, he's just a flat out playmaker at this point.

is he fast enough to play the other safety? i know he's better than Damar Hamlin. Maybe you don't mess with the mojo right now? I just hate seeing Damar out of position so friggin much.

Who is a better FS today? That's the question.

smart money is on Micah imo.

I feel like some safeties can get by on brains alone even if they have lost a step or two (Micah has tbf.)

Who is faster in a foot race today, Damar Hamlin or Micah Hyde?

In a straight race?  It's probably pretty close because of the age difference alone, but man....earlier this season, Hamlin looked like one of the slowest players I have ever seen in the NFL.  I would probably take Micha, but he had obviously lost a step last year, especially as the season went along.

That said, he is coming in with fresh legs and no wear and tear from the season on his body.  There is a chance he comes in and looks way better than he did last season.  Or, he could look shot because he hasn't been training for football games directly.  My guess is, though, this didn't happen overnight.  I am sure there have been discussions for a while now and I would be shocked if he didn't already have the playbook prior to today to get refreshed on everything or learn anything new that was put in this season.  I am guessing he has been ramping up his training and I fully expect him to hit the ground running and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him elevated and on the field in some capacity in the next 2-3 weeks.

I just don’t understand the hate for Hamlin.   As some have said, this team is clicking right now.  You don’t just screw with that chemistry.  It’s risky enough just putting Milano in the game. And if anyone saw him play against SF you realize the liability and rust he brought to the game!  I digress… Milano will get better; just needs snaps to get the rust out.

I don’t think for one minute Hyde was signed to replace Hamlin.   What this is, is good roster management!  We need depth at safety.  It’s a no brainer to bring Hyde back for that depth.  And I love that they’re doing it now. He has a few weeks to get into shape.

If all goes well, we have 2 or 3 largely meaningless games to close the season.  That will be a great opportunity to manage the roster and playing time to ensure everyone is healthy and locked in when the playoffs start.  Hyde being able to substitute in at safety should ensure that position groups stays healthy.

This is an awesome roster add… but, yeah, anyone thinking Hamlin won’t be starting is gonna be disappointed.

The big thing here is we have an experienced player at one of our weaker positions ready and available to contribute on and off the field if needed. Even if Rapp and Hamlin are playing well all it takes is one play to lose someone for a few games or longer- Hyde knows everything there is to know about this defense and is still capable of playing at a professional level.

For me, I am most excited for what Hyde can do in terms of helping Bishop develop. Cole couldn’t ask for a better teacher to help him learn the position on this defense better, and if the Bills manage to pull this off and get the job done in February I can think of few players who I would like more to get a ring. Hyde was among the first signings we made as we began to turn the franchise around, and if he can still go he deserves to be part of this team.

Most likely it’s because he hasn’t been good but people act like he is just because of his incident. The people that act like he’s good ignore the bad and argue with the people that provide proof of why he’s been bad. It gets frustrating proving the same thing over and over again.

Edit- I am one of his biggest critics. But Hamlin has been playing better the last few weeks. Not saying he’s good. Just better than he was.

It's not hating on a person if you think they are the weak link.  For most it's what we see.  We watch all the games.  I think it might be the reverse, that a lot of people here have an emotional attachment to Hamlin based on the unique circumstances and aren't evaluating his game properly.

Are you the guy who said Amari Cooper was good insurance for Mack Hollins?  That you didn't want to upset the chemistry of the 4-2 team?

Milano is not a risk.  Hyde is not a risk.  It's upgrading the defense for the stretch run and playoffs.

Ball hawk! If and it's a BIG if, he can get back in football shape,  and can play at 75% of his peak level, he's better than Hamlin and could make some big plays for us in the SB run.

Our D is limiting opponents to 6.6 yards per pass attempt - 3rd best in the NFL.

It doesn't seem like anyone in our secondary is out of position very often.

Now go get me AJ Klein, and we will be all set!!

Keon's so slow that he'd still be battling for contested catches even with AJ Klein in coverage...

Considering (1) we only have 3 true safeties, and (2) Hyde was only signed to the practice squad, I'm not sure how anyone can see this as anything but a good thing.

I'm glad to have him, except he'll contribute on the practice field and meeting room,  and hope he gets his ring.  I also hope we don't have to use him if that means someone else got injured.

On the other hand, if we do have an injury at safety, I'm glad we'll have Hyde as a backup rather than some guy off the street.  McD runs difficult concepts in his secondary that are hard to learn.  Hyde may not be in his athletic prime but he's not likely to commit mental errors which can be killers.

I’m mixed on this.

With Edwards leaving, the Bills need someone else at safety and Hyde is the obvious choice given his knowledge of the defense. Hyde is a leader but he isn’t the player he was. Even so, I’m sure there will be a lot of internal pressure (and external pressure based on this thread 😄) to replace Hamlin with Hyde and I think that has the potential to be divisive within the team. I guess we’ll see how it’s handled.

I seriously doubt Hyde came out of retirement to be a practice squad player. I think he’s going to want to play once he’s in shape, regardless of injuries.
