My guess is that he is essentially another safeties coach. Which is a good thing, because I worried about his neck/health every time he made a tackle last season.

There is no down side to this, really even if he comes in to play.

He is a veteran mentor role player off the field and he is an incredibly well versed in our defense veteran grizzle dawg player on the field, even if he has lost a step or two.

Give me slower but Zen over younger but clueless seven days a week.

Maybe this is just a way to get Hyde a one last hurrah. Maybe try and get the guy who was fundamental to our success a ring and then let him retire. Maybe he doesnt play and just mentors. I always get back to... its a coaches job to put the best players on the field. Once Hyde is in game shape, he is better than Hamlin. Even if Hyde lost a step, Hamlin is slow anyways. I love Hamlin and he isn't killing us but he is the weak spot.

It’s not sad. It’s great.

The Bills aren’t signing Hyde for charity. They’re doing so because they have a weakness on the defense and they are trying to fix it.

Kudos to Beane and McD. I give them credit.

This is a move to put someone who was integral to the teams growth on the sideline for a run and to put a locker room leader back in the locker room to bring even more morale for that run. Simple as that. If you think this is a move to replace Damar Hamlin in the Starting Lineup - I think you're setting yourself up for a disappointment.

Hamlin is slow as molasses and is a glaring weakness against teams like Detroit. If Hamlin plays poorly at Detroit, my guess is Hyde takes over going forward.

Not sure I agree.

Our recent history of late season veteran practice squad additions (Devonta Freeman, Leonard Fournette, etc) doesn't suggest to me that his being elevating and taking away a starter's spot is imminent.

IF Hamlin starts struggling over the next few weeks (and I don't mean playing at the level he's been playing at recently, I mean ACTUALLY struggling), then I can see them elevating Hyde and starting him. Ditto if there's an injury.

Otherwise? I don't expect McDermott to break up the starting safety duo. Just my opinion.

IMO, barring injury, Hyde only starts if he’s consistently showing in practice that he’s one of the 2 best safeties on the team. Which I think is possible if his legs are fresh, but I’m also not banking on.

Under McD, it’s been pretty consistent - once a guy earns a starting job in camp or preseason, it’s pretty much his to lose. This is a little different, because the job was Hyde’s to lose last time he played. But I think McD & Babich won’t be willing to rock the boat unless they either need to, or they’re really confident it’ll pay off.

Hyde is loved and respected enough in that room that I don't think there will be any boat-rocking.

I agree, partially because I have faith in the people involved. Hypothetically, let’s say Hyde has lost enough speed that he’s simply not as good as Hamlin right now. In that scenario - even as respected/beloved as Hyde is - someone would be mad if Hamlin went to the bench so Hyde could start. (Maybe not Hamlin, to be fair.)

I don’t think there’s a realistic chance of that scenario happening though, because I don’t think that Hyde would see the field if he’s too slow to play now. Worst case, this adds a ton of football IQ to the safeties room to help prep for playoff opponents.

Who is faster in a foot race today, Damar Hamlin or Micah Hyde?

Who is a better FS today? That's the question.

I'm happy about it. Worst case he's a vet presence on the PS that doesn't cost much. He knows the system and might even be a difference maker.

Agreed.

The Bills have the 6th ranked scoring defense in the league. Over the past 3 games, they've given up an average of 17 points per game.

I don't think McDermott and Babich will be eager to swap out one of the two starters at safety for a guy who hasn't played football in a year.

If the safety play starts to decline or injures strike? Sure. Otherwise, I think some people are letting what they WANT to see happen cloud their judgement in terms of what is actually LIKELY to happen.

Poyer is obviously washed seeing his play on the field.... But is Hyde not washed? Playing a half a season...maybe? Will he eventually start over Damar? Will he reach the active 53? Our current depth at safety isn't great especially with release of Edwards..... What's you're guys thoughts
