I'm going to state an unpopular opinion - he shouldn't be credited with two TDs on that play. It's either a passing TD or a rushing TD. Personally I would give him a pass completion and then a rushing TD in the stat books. Even though I will always have fun saying "Josh Allen is the only QB in history to score 2 TDs on a single play."

I figured he'd get it after getting the hat trick throwing, running, and catching TDs.

Even with that insane play and a marvelous performance throughout the game, Wilson threw for over 400 yards albeit in a loss. Congrats Josh! Hope you new home has a huge mantle for the awards you’re going to win later!

He threw a pass, the pass was completed, what happens after that doesn't change the play. It was a pass and a reception

Because of the lateral Josh scores a TD , but it was a pass play that started it. Any other player who takes a lateral after a pass completion and scores a TD gets credited with a TD reception. No different for Josh

I was pretty sure the NFL was going to give one of those TDs  credits (on one play) to the Chiefs.

In thinking about it, recording 2 TDs on one play was a practical decision for the sake of keeping stats sort of clean: Josh threw a pass that ended up being a TD; he also caught a pass that wound up as a TD.  And you can't have 1/2 TDs. And you want to give credit where credit is due.  So best choice is to record 2 TDs on one play which is highly unusual/unlikely but the best option given the circumstances.

I was a little surprised that Allen got the award over Wilson.  But in that game Wilson did throw a bad pick 6 while also going against a historically bad defense.

Correct - the only way it doesn’t follow this is if the lateral had hit the ground and been called a fumble.

Then he would of gotten a completion, fumble recovery, and a TD, but since it was clean it is a pass completion and a receiving TD - same as on any other lateral play during a game - like Detroit did earlier in the year.

Please don’t say that because it would be wrong.  Several QBs have thrown passes that got deflected back and they actually made the reception and scored TD - thus having both a passing and receiving TD on the same play.  I believe Marcus Mariota did it most recently.

He is the only QB to be credited with a passing TD, a receiving TD, and a rushing TD in the same game since the 1970 merger.  It was 3 or 4 RBs and a WR previously - which all goes to show the athletic nature of Josh.

If only he’d have checked down to Diggs instead of looking for the TD to Shakir in last year’s  playoff game.   You know, if only he’d were safe and easy.

I’m here to point out that a really safe decision on one play, that may run contrary to an all world hall of fame set of instincts, makes me feel good in a small, safe, way   I’m willing to point it out, too, in post after post.

I actually thought that was the way they'd score it.  It makes more sense.  I think Mariota and Brad Johnson also scored two TD's on a single play so the cool stat to me is the only QB ever to run for, catch, and pass for a TD in a single game.

Mariota caught it off a defensive lineman and never had his WR pitch it to him after catching it.  I was really surprised they called Allen's TD a receiving one.

And this type of thinking brought us 18 years of football purgatory.
