Phillips has always been a + pass rusher from 3T and has to be given firm marching orders to mind his gap in the run game. 

 

Yea that is all true. It has always been a mystery to me and most of the NFL I think how someone his size can be so dreadful vs the run so consistently. I think the reason he pass rushes better in Buffalo is likely the Bills are the one team who understand what he is. A 3T in a 1T body.

P.S. His snap share has actually gone down since initially returning to Buffalo (36%, 29%, 21% in 3 games)

Also, from The Athletic: "And at safety, the Bills have carried only three on their roster since Nov. 5, the day they released veteran safety Mike Edwards. Since then, the trio of Taylor Rapp, Damar Hamlin and Cole Bishop have been the only safeties on the team. If it came to needing a fourth starter, they would probably entrust backup nickel corner Cam Lewis because he has experience there, but they are missing that fourth safety. That’s where Hyde would fit in.

He's a bit small to be playing ST, I think he was just on ST because they sat Solomon, Elam, and Ulofoshio.  Virgil has provided nothing on offense so I don't think he can just stay on the team for ST.

Depth, just in case someone gets hurt.  Plus the leadership aspect.  As another poster pointed out, we only have three true safeties on the roster right now.

Josh Reynolds could be an interesting add just being waived by the Broncos. With the Rams and Lions coming up back to back he was with both teams for quite some time and could probably help in the red zone a bit. We still have nagging injuries at that position.

We need linemen? How many? We have 10 on the active roster and, presumably, Carter to return.

He was playing STs because he was up as the 5th receiver and if you are up as the 5th receiver you need to play some teams.

Love adding Hyde to PS at this leg of the season, to ensure he’s ready to go for playoffs if we need him due to injury. Plus he will add vet knowledge, leadership etc at practice, scout team, film, locker room, etc., apart from anything he will or won’t need to do on the actual playing field. no brainer imo

Those conditions were favoring the run game in a big way for a team who had the horses but then lost both of them.

I could be wrong, but I don't see it as much of a mystery.  Phillips is at his best as a penetrating DT.  He wants to go after the QB like he's a hungry warthog and the QB is covered in steak.  So he leaves too quickly and doesn't maintain gap integrity.

 

The Bills defense depends upon the DL getting pressure on the QB, but not so quickly that they lose their gap and become vulnerable to the run.  They need to be aggressive, but not TOO aggressive, which is a fine line thus a tough "ask", and one reason why our DLmen don't rack up as many hits and sacks as some other teams.

White is still part of the PS, he was just one of the callups this week, he reverts automatically back to the PS unless the Bills sign him to the 53. Just giving him a Christmas bonus.
