Pro-China, Pro-North Korean Opposition party shutting down the government to show democracy is a failure. So PM declared Martial Law

This is how the Nazis did it in 1932-33. Ruined the ability to rule, then just overthrew the republic,.

I found this, for whatever it is worth on a message board:

Background: The largest opposition party's leader was convicted, with another major opposition leader also convicted.

The two, Lee Jae-Myung and Cho Guk, have been criticized as taking advantage of their parliamentarian privilege to stay away from imprisonment and conviction.

Also, opposition parties impeached and are trying to impeach as many as 10 ministers and prosecutors, the latter of whom investigated the opposition politicians.

They also refused to pass the budget, preventing the government from functioning.

Basically, the opposition parties refused to pass any law, even relating to people's everyday lives.

From the president's perspective, the Martial Law seems to be the last resort. Meanwhile, the opposition's the ntion was obvious: To impeach the incumbent president taking advantage of the majority rule. ..

They have already announced that they will impeach the PresPresidenthin 6 months.

The opposition party tends to lean toward or be sympathetic with China and North Korea; the ruling party is conservative or market-oriented, emphasizing individual liberty and lower taxes, smaller government, and pro-America or pro-liberal, rule-based internationalism or liberal institutionalist.

Right now, armored vehicles are seen in places in Seoul. The decree covers the whole nation.

Looks to me like their president is using unsupported claims of foreign and domestic pro-North Korean actors in order to use martial law against his opponents.

Not good. Wonder how this will impact US Forces Korea. We have a lot of good people over there.

South Korea President Yoon declares martial law, slams domestic opponents

"SEOUL, Dec 3 (Reuters) - South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Tuesday declared martial law in a surprise late-night TV address, slamming domestic political opponents and sending shockwaves through the country.

Yoon said opposition parties had taken the parliamentary process hostage. He vowed to eradicate "shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces" and said he had no choice but to take the measure to safeguard constitutional order.

Yonhap news agency cited the military as saying activities by parliament and political parties would be banned, and that media and publishers would be under the control of the martial law command.

Yoon did not cite any specific threat from the nuclear-armed North, instead focusing on his domestic political opponents. It is the first time since 1980 that martial law has been declared in South Korea.

South Korea has had a series of authoritarian leaders early in its history but has been considered democratic since the 1980s.

The Korean won was down sharply against the U.S. dollar. A central bank official said it was preparing measures to stabilise the market if needed. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok has convened an emergency meeting among top economic officials, his spokesman said in a text message.

Yoon's predecessor, Moon Jae-in of the Democratic Party, said in a post on X that the country's democracy is in crisis. "I hope that the National Assembly will act quickly to protect our democracy from crumbling," he wrote in a post. "I ask the people to join forces to protect and save democracy and to help the National Assembly function normally."

The United States is in contact with the South Korean government and is monitoring the situation closely, a White House spokesperson said.

Some 28,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea to guard against the North. A spokesman for the U.S. military command did not answer repeated phone calls.

Japan's prime minister's office could not immediately be reached for a comment outside of business hours.

YOON SLAMS PARLIAMENT

"I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order," Yoon said.

Yoon did not immediately specify who constituted the pro-North Korean anti-state forces. But he has cited such forces in the past as hindering his agenda and undermining the country.

He did not say in the address what specific measures will be taken. Yonhap reported that the entrance to the parliament building was blocked.

"Tanks, armored personnel carriers, and soldiers with guns and knives will rule the country," Lee Jae-myung, leader of the opposition Democratic Party, which has the majority in parliament, said in a livestream online. "The economy of the Republic of Korea will collapse irretrievably. My fellow citizens, please come to the National Assembly."

Yoon cited a motion by the country's opposition Democratic Party, which has a majority in parliament, this week to impeach some of the country's top prosecutors and its rejection of a government budget proposal.

"Our parliament has become a den for criminals. It has paralyzed the administrative and legal systems by ramming through (opposition-driven) legislations and is attempting to overthrow our democratic system," Yoon said.

South Korea's ministers on Monday protested the move by the opposition DP last week to slash more than 4 trillion won from the government's budget proposal. Yoon said that action undermines the essential functioning of government administration.

South Korea's opposition parties held a rally on Saturday calling for Yoon to accept a special prosecutor investigation on allegations of fraud against the first lady, the latest such protests by the party and civic groups in recent weeks against Yoon.

In October, North Korean propaganda leaflets apparently carried by balloons were found scattered on the streets of Seoul, including some making personal attacks on Yoon and the first lady.

Yoon labeled the opposition’s actions as “clear anti-state behavior aimed at inciting rebellion.” He further claimed these acts have “paralyzed state affairs and turned the National Assembly into a den of criminals.”

He describing martial law as a necessary measure to eradicate these “shameless pro-North anti-state forces.” He justified the decision as essential to protect the freedoms and safety of the people, ensure the country’s sustainability, and pass on a stable nation to future generations.

Yoon accused the opposition of turning the nation into a “drug haven” and creating a state of disorder detrimental to public safety and livelihood. He also said the Democratic Party was attempting to overthrow the liberal democratic system, declaring, “The National Assembly has become a monster undermining liberal democracy, and the nation is in a precarious state, teetering on the edge of collapse.”

He assured the public, “We will eliminate the anti-state forces and restore the country to normalcy as quickly as possible.” While acknowledging that martial law might cause some inconvenience, he promised efforts to minimize its impact on the public.

1. All political activities, including activities of the National Assembly, local councils, political parties and associations, rallies, and demonstrations, are prohibited.

2. Any actions that deny or attempt to overthrow the liberal democratic system are prohibited, and fake news, manipulation of public opinion, and false propaganda are prohibited.

3. All media and publications are controlled by martial law.

4. Strikes, sabotage, and assembly activities that encourage social chaos are prohibited.

5. All medical personnel, including residents, who are on strike or have left the medical field, must return to their regular duties within 48 hours and work faithfully, and any violations will be punished according to martial law.

6. Good citizens, excluding subversive forces such as anti-state forces, shall take measures to minimize inconvenience in their daily lives.

Yoon is very unpopular, and there is evidence of rampant corruption. There is much more evidence of this being a desperation move by Yoon than of widespread North Korean subversion. The declaration of martial law was condemned by Yoon's own party as well as the opposition.

The Biden national security team seems flummoxed.

Korean soldiers had entered the National Assembly building. Reporting is that they are now starting to retreat in the wake of parliament voting to lift martial law.

I wonder if anything like this could ever (cough...covid) happen here?

Remember: January 20th, 2025 is more than a month away and there's still a "democracy" to be saved.

That list looks so familiar.

We were under Martial Law.

[Breaking] Martial law forces withdraw from parliament after nullification vote

“Forces have completely withdrawn from South Korea's National Assembly building, the Speaker's office confirmed to local media early Wednesday morning.

The withdrawal came shortly after the National Assembly voted unanimously to nullify President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law, with all 190 lawmakers present voting in favor at 1:01 a.m. Wednesday.

Earlier footage showed soldiers breaking windows to enter the main parliamentary floor. Forces were positioned at the main entrance where they blocked civilians, and outside the main chamber where lawmakers were present.

Parliamentary staff reportedly confronted the soldiers, with some using fire extinguishers to block their entry, according to local media reports.”

If Trump carries out his stupid policies, he will soon be as unpopular as this Korean leader. I'm sure he will take that well. This group of losers and freaks he is stuffing the executive branch with shows how much this idiot is overreaching so we won't have to wait long. Where does the clown show end up?

They have certainly become emboldened during the Biden presidency. Sad!

Singapore lost its freedom under Trump, now with Trump coming back, South Korea is the target. Biden saved Ukraine let's hope Trump doesn't give it away

This has been the worst coup in the history of coups, maybe ever

Apparently Yoon declared martial law but then just sent in... regular troops? He didn't put loyalists in place in the military first?

Seems like an oversight...

Right now, he's probably talking with his life coach about what went wrong and why.  A lot of martial law seekers are actually quite introspective and just looking to grow.   He'll learn from this.

From what I understand blaming the opposition citing their supposed North Korean sympathies is rather popular among S Korean politicians.

I'm laying 10 to 1 odds that the American liberal media at some point in the news cycle is going to blame Trump's 2024 election victory for the coup in Korea. The theme being his win "emboldened" the Korean President to take this action. And it was a "dress rehearsal" for what Trump is planning. Wait for it...

Live Updates: South Korean President Backs Down From Martial Law Order

"President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea said he would lift the emergency declaration of martial law he imposed on Tuesday as soon as he could convene his cabinet, bowing to pressure after the National Assembly passed a resolution demanding it end. By law, Mr. Yoon needs to convene his cabinet to lift martial law.

The announcement by Mr. Yoon early Wednesday in South Korea came five hours after he declared martial law late Tuesday night in an unannounced televised address, and soon after the assembly unanimously voted to rescind it, a swift rebuke of the president’s response to the political deadlock that has hobbled his tenure."
