NFL made a juicy statement on this one. This clown isn't getting it reduced. He should have gotten more. The hit was intended. He knew Lawrence slid or he wouldn't have gone so low to the ground to make the hit. You don't try to forearm someones legs to make a tackle. His punishment is not only for this hit. Its his trend as a dirty player too.

NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan issued the suspension and wrote in a letter: “During your game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on December 1, with 4:20 remaining in the second quarter, you were involved in a play that the League considers unacceptable and a serious violation of the playing rules. Video shows you striking the head/neck area of Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence after he clearly goes down in a feet-first slide...You led with your forearm and helmet and delivered a forceful blow to the head/neck area of your opponent when you had time and space to avoid such contact. After the illegal hit, you proceeded to engage in a brawl, which you escalated when you pulled an opponent down to the ground by his facemask.  After the referee announced that you were disqualified for the hit and your unsportsmanlike acts, you removed your helmet and reengaged with your opponent while walking down and across the field, which started another physical confrontation near the end zone. Your lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and all those who play, coach, and enjoy watching it, is troubling and does not reflect the core values of the NFL…Your continued disregard for NFL playing rules puts the health and safety of both you and your opponents in jeopardy and will not be tolerated.”

LOL, you dont see him leaning back?

His right leg is planted in the ground and he’s pushing himself to move to his left. How the ***** is he supposed to slide in that position? He would literally have to fall on his side.

He does the exact same move here in college. It happens twice in this clip, do you believe he was attempting to slide twice behind the LOS?

EDIT:

He is sliding!!

@Matt_In_NH

Watch Lamar chop his feet here to juke… it just happens to look different because he’s 3 inches shorter, 50 pounds lighter and more athletic.

For contrast, here is the infamous Kenny Pickett fake slide. He puts himself in a different position, he drops his back leg and starts to make like he’s driving his ass cheek into the ground. He drags that bag leg almost like a “duck walk” in wrestling… no short and choppy steps in an attempt to change direction.

When was the last time a player intentionally went to injure a Quarterback? It almost never happens.

I think 3 was too light. I'd have banned him for the rest of this season.

Game moves too fast to see if it was done with malice or not.  Three seems fair imo.

When was the last time the league suspended someone like this? 3 games feels like a lot.

Suspended Kareem Jackson last year.  4 games twice; first suspension was reduced to 2 games.

Am I remembering incorrectly, or did this guy have some questionable hits against the Bills earlier this year as well?

I dunno about against the Bills, but he hit Caleb Williams OOB and then punched Bears RB Johnson in the face when he objected.

He wasn't suspended for that.

Earlier in his career he grabbed Tom Brady by the throat [Edit: not that there's anything wrong with that....]

He was suspended 3 games, not for one illegal hit, but for

1) a previous pattern of illegal hits and after the whistle unsportsmanlike behavior (punching opponent in face)
2) his behavior after the hit, where he threw a Jags player down by the facemask and continued to yell and fight after he was informed he'd been ejected.

Malice doesn't matter.  The NFL has made it clear they are not in the business of judging intent.

Don't hit a player in the head.

Don't hit a player who has given themselves up in the head

Yeah, I want to add....Josh Allen is not above using the fake slide move, but that juke in the Pittsburgh game was not it.

Houston coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday that those kind of plays are difficult for defenders to navigate.

“Unfortunate hit on the quarterback,” Ryans said. “But it’s two-fold, a lot of the quarterbacks in this day and age, they try to take advantage of the rule where they slide late and they try to get an extra yard and now ... a lot of onus is on the defender, right?

The hit was completely unnecessary.

That being said, I’m not a huge fan of the penalty by the league here. The hit occurred on the field during a game. An ejection, hefty fine and 1 game suspension for these kinds of hits is ample punishment in my opinion.

How is Von Miller suspended 4 games and this dude gets 3 games for an on the field play? Yes it was aggressive and a penalty. Ejection, fine and 1 game suspension should be enough for these kind of matters.

Rice almost killed someone and committed a crime and we are still waiting “for things to play out”. And you know what, he’ll prob get 4 games max when it’s all settled.

There should be clearer guidelines on suspensions overall - both for on field and off the field incidents.

Again, Al-Shaair wasn't suspended 3 games for this one hit on the field.  He was suspended for 1) his actions after the whistle, which included throwing a Jaguars player down by the facemask and trying to go after a different Jags player after the ref informed him he was ejected 2) his actions earlier in the fall, hitting Caleb Williams out of bounds and punching a Bears player in the face when he objected 3) previous seasons actions that are seen as a pattern

The league does habitually wait for the legal process to complete before taking disciplinary action.  A practical part of that is while evidence is being gathered and reviewed by law enforcement, the league may not have full access to it and doesn't want to be held to be compromising a legal case by sending out their own investigators.

Von Miller was suspended 4 games because that's the league's minimum suspension for domestic violence.  It didn't take place until this season because until the law decided there would be no charges filed, the league wasn't gonna investigate.

No idea what Rice will get.  I would hope, more than 4 games.

Yeah, I guess I wasn’t clear. I think the punishment matches the crime, I was more so saying it feels like they don’t normally suspend players for this long.

They have.  Has to be repeat offender (which he is), and the after-the-whistle stuff likely added a game.

Darryl Stingley agrees

Thought he got a shoulder pad to the head.

(looks it up)

Yeah shoulder pad to helmet.

But while looking, I found this juicy bit:

Quote

The Raiders coach, John Madden, and many of his teammates extended their sympathies to Stingley.[3] Madden's postgame rush to the hospital was the beginning of a close friendship.[13] During his visit, Madden found himself the lone visitor in the hospital. No one from the Patriots was there until Madden called their team and the team's charter plane, in takeoff mode, finally returned to the gate.[14]

Houston wasn't going to beat KC anyway.  The Chargers and Steelers will do that for us.

So why did they beat the Bills this year?  I agree the Chargers and Steelers statement but wouldn't it be better if KC lost 3 of their remaining games?

you know, call me crazy but I think that a dirty on field play should be a stiffer punishment than poor behavior in the offseason

you know, integrity of the game and safety of coworkers being more important than being role models when deciding who needs to be taken off the field?

The presser by NC GM of Texans is embarrassing. The player has had multiple recent late hits.. following one of them he punched a player. So this is 3 in about 6 weeks. Did they not talk to the guy ? He’s obviously hurting the team. He should have been suspended after the Bears punch. But the indignant defense of the poor innocent cheap shop artist is rich. Going so far to say he’s a great guy and how do they know his intent? Well his actions are his intent Texans! 3 late hits and two fights after, the Jags fight he takes his helmet off and wants to throw down. The response from the Texans top to bottom shows zero accountability and a lack of leadership maturity. I’m sure their classy response will help him got a reduction. Having said that it should be his second suspension and that’s on the league.

It's a valid point of view that for a game, on the field play should matter more than actions away from the field (Von Miller's behavior was not in the off season, it was during the bye week).

That said, there's a lot of space between "don't commit domestic violence" and "be a role model off the field"

Marcus Spears and Richard Sherman are more upset about runyans comments than the actual dirty hit by the Texans linebacker....

Gotta love him literally grabbing Tom Brady by the throat and other multiple violations that are late / dirty , but all of a sudden the Texans linebacker is the real victim here lol

I just can't anymore 😭

This Texans team is turning into a clown show. Especially with the diggs nonsense in the background. Along with strouds bizarre comments in the off-season

Must've been 1 game for the hit, 1 game for the tom foolery afterwards and the 3rd game because it's the Chiefs.

As Bills fans we know that trying to paralyze someone with an Elbow brace is only worth 1 game.

I think his actions afterward pretty much blew any benefit of the doubt he would’ve gotten lol although to me it was pretty clear he could’ve easily avoided that hit

Josh Allen had one of the worst games of his career and the Bills still nearly won. Houston is very overrated IMO

Losing to the Lions when Goff gifted them 5 INTs was the end of the illusion for me
