The hit was completely unnecessary.

That being said, I’m not a huge fan of the penalty by the league here. The hit occurred on the field during a game. An ejection, hefty fine and 1 game suspension for these kinds of hits is ample punishment in my opinion.

How is Von Miller suspended 4 games and this dude gets 3 games for an on the field play? Yes it was aggressive and a penalty. Ejection, fine and 1 game suspension should be enough for these kind of matters.

Rice almost killed someone and committed a crime and we are still waiting “for things to play out”. And you know what, he’ll prob get 4 games max when it’s all settled.

There should be clearer guidelines on suspensions overall - both for on field and off the field incidents.

If that was Josh Allen that got concussed, i doubt you would think that was a lot.

NFL is doing the right thing

Yeah, I guess I wasn’t clear. I think the punishment matches the crime, I was more so saying it feels like they don’t normally suspend players for this long.

I'm not sure if the NFL does in-person hearings with the player like the NHL. If they don't, I think his "apology" letter was enough to show he has zero contrition and will do this again the next chance he gets. Good suspension IMO. We can't have dudes knocking out QBs. There aren't even enough good QBs for each team to have one.

Texans are the worst.

That's how I feel as well.

Say what you will about D Watson, because he definitely seems like a pompous scumbag, but none of his troubles would have come out if he didn't refuse to play for Houston. They enabled his behavior.

Lawrence started his slide late? He started his slide at the 47 yard line and Al-Shaair was on the 41.

Al-Shaair was standing up when Lawrence was starting to go down and then he decided the best thing to do was launch himself with his head and forearm leading?

The point is, Lawrence is down where he begins his slide… which was 6 yards away from where Al-Shaair was standing. Well short of the marker - there was literally no reason for the player to do that.

EDIT:

Here is where Lawrence starts his slide, which by rule, is where he is down.

Al-Shaair is the guy by himself standing on the 0 of the 40 yard line.

I dont know that he started his slide late (thats subjective), but some of the objective things about his slide in your post are incorrect.  Lawrence was noted as down at the 45from pro football reference (the following play was 3rd and 1 from the 45 because of ridiculous offsetting penalties) indicating (as your rightly noted) he began his slide there.  Thats another 2 steps by Lawrence and 2 steps by Al-Shaair so hes probably only 3 yards away (maybe less).

However, none of this is meant to excuse Al-Shaair of what he did.  Considering the slide started at the 45 and contact was made at the 43 thats a fair bit of time to realize the play is over.  Clearly he was head hunting and he got the punishment (maybe light honestly) he earned.

Thanks for adding that - I didn’t check PFR.

I was just going off of what I observed in the video. By my untrained eye, he starts to break down at the 47 and Shaair is at the 41.

When was the last time a player intentionally went to injure a Quarterback? It almost never happens.

I think 3 was too light. I'd have banned him for the rest of this season.

An isolated incident is one thing. He has a pattern of dirty hits. He's lucky he didn't get more.

Yeah, I don’t see it.

Lawrence is lowering himself to the ground. Allen just planted his right leg and is changing direction after chopping his feet to make an attempt to change direction.

You don’t chop your feet to slide lol

LOL, you dont see him leaning back?

I would tell my QB never slide in a playoff game.

Would a dirty player, repeat offender, like this do the math and say "15 yard penalty, but no _______ for the rest of the game, in a tournament where it's loser go home" ?

Especially when your coach will apparently back you up...

"It was snowy and slippery out there... I couldn't stop!"

can't believe im saying this but i agreed with Rex on that.  I wouldnt coach it anymore.  Get down and dont take the contact but the slide leaves you vulnerable to nefarious actors.

I read his HC blamed lawrence for the hit, lmao

Yes, Ryan’s comments show an over abundance of protection for his guy. A guy who has a long history of infractions. Telling us all that he hasn’t held the guy accountable! Even after punching the Bears guy immediately followed by the late hit on the Titans RB. The Texans have been very borderline with late/dirty hits during his tenure. Demonstrates a lack of true HC growth. They are not a serious contender with him at the helm.

He will likely appeal and get a game or two shaved off. I'd bet only one as this isn't the first time he's been in trouble for latel hits

It isn’t.  It’s the third.  That’s why the stiff penalty.

I think two things are simultaneously true:

1. Al-Shaiir has a history of making dirty plays, and was justifiably suspended because of his latest one.
2. All the extracurricular talk about him being a "thug", needing to be behind bars, or any discussion whatsoever of his last name, his race, Hamas, etc, is out of hand, unnecessary, and -- in many cases -- reeks of thinly veiled xenophobia.

The guy makes dirty and sometimes dangerous football plays. That's it. No need to make it about anything other than that.

Except his apology non apology included his being a victim. His decision to wear cleats that are clearly political approved by the NFL while at the same time not allowing others to do the same is hypocrisy. That I assume has triggered some inappropriate attacks.
Certainly any racial attacks are not appropriate. Yet his on field behavior speaks to a dirty cheap shot mentality. While at the same time it’s ridiculous to suggest he be jailed. I actually think a 1 game suspension is the right amount. Since up to this point he’s had zero games. His coach and the NFL own some of this repeat behavior because he’s not been held accountable.
