Week 14 - Bills at Rams Game Week Thread

This game is not going to be easy. The rams are very talented and they will make us prove we can stop the run. I’d be more impressed with a win at LA than I was with 49ers. Got to find a way to keep it rolling but this will not be an easy game.

The mirage of running effectively.  San fran and Miami had success at running.  I assume McVay sees that as an area they can exploit.  Now in most cases it’s fruitless but a route to moving the ball.  Buffalo will try to create a neg play on early downs with the front 7 and force third and longs.

I think the 9ers looked competitive before McCaffrey went down. Mason had a couple good runs early, as I recall, but didn't turn out to be terribly effective down the stretch. I don't think the Rams have the horsepower to exploit the run. 200lb Karen Williams ain't no CMC, or Derek Henry. And beyond Williams, there really isn't any depth at RB for the Rams. If McVay is going to dial up a plan to beat the Bills, it's not going to be in the run game. At best, Williams can balance the offense, but it's going to be Krupp, and Nacua-- especially if they have to play from behind.

With regard to stopping the run, the key difference between the SF game and the Rams game is this:

The Bills felt comfortable bringing safeties down into the box and selling out to stop the run because they didn't trust injured Brock Purdy in a snowstorm to be able to push the ball downfield in the passing game. They weren't scared of Juaun Jennings or Deebo Samuel.

On the other hand, if they try to sell out to stop the run against the Rams, healthy Matthew Stafford in a dome has a much better chance of successfully getting the ball downfield to Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua.

I expect the Bills to try to stay in their nickel defense and limit the big play (their usual defensive preference), which will necessarily concede a lot of rushing yardage to Kyren Williams and the Rams offense. At the end of the day, though, I don't expect that it will correlate to enough points to beat the Bills.

Still, the next two weeks -- LA and Detroit -- will be enormous tests for the Bills' run defense, any way you slice it.

Our local analysts have continued to call for more Dalton Kincaid - the number of passes thrown his way, using him down the field. Nate Geary just made that case twice in the last week, once on the Joe Marino podcast, the other on Bills-49ers pregame. 

 

Is this just to justify the 1st-Round pick in their minds? Because in the 2-1/2 games that he's been out, Dawson Knox has done in 2-catches/game what Dalton Kincaid takes 4 catches to do (2.66 catches, 45.3 yards). 

 

The average Kincaid game so far in 26 games is 4.11 catches for 39.5 yards. 

 

So why this call to force more Kincaid? Do fans think there is another level to unlock, or is he a good possession Tight End? 

 

I understand Allen has missed Kincaid down the field this season, so does that make up the difference? Does any of this drop in catch % fall on Kincaid not being fast enough to get down the field?

I’m guessing because Kincaid has elite receiver abilities that are yet to be fully  utilized, Knox is more than capable of being TE1 but having Kincaid breakout and be a consistent threat against man coverage and on 3rd down is the optimal outcome.

The last thing we need is to have a player who NEEDS the ball X number of times per game. Diggs was that and it doesn't help. We have a balanced offense based on what we need that day.

 

Kincaid should be happy with 2 targets or 10 targets, if the team wins. That's my sense of how Cooper, Hollins, Samuel, Knox and the RBs are approaching it.

I hope the Bills wait until Kincaid and Coleman are 100% healthy and completely ready before they bring them back.  I actually think the current version of the offensive roster is just fine.  I trust all the receivers to catch the ball and Knox can block.

Dont hate holding Kincaid out until after Detroit with that ***** turf. Has a knee issue no reason to push it and tear it up there.

Like how Josh says they can "play free" now.  With the home game locked up, they can play somewhat, I said somewhat, stress free.  Of course they want to see the #1 seed, but I just don't think they catch the Chiefs.  If they come out of the next two without an L, I might advise and extend my remarks.

He’s the best QB in the nfc. I mean I’m not assuming everyone else watches all things NFL but the guy is a hall of famer. This game is not a joke he’s the best QB we will face all year that wasn’t mahomes

The Chiefs have some tough games on their schedule as well. I could see them losing a few of them.

This makes a lot of sense here.  I personally think we match up pretty well against their passing game, with Benford/Douglas following Nacua and Taron on Kupp.  Even if Kyren gets decent yardage on the ground, thinking it won’t be enough to keep up with how much our offense puts up against them.  If our D-line gets some decent push, could be a long day for the Rams.

I would be seriously worried if I were the rams and had to play Josh Allen in an indoor stadium. They would have a better chance winning this game in a snow storm in buffalo than in LA.
