OT: what did you think of the hit on Lawrence?

First, I hated to see Lawrence hurt like that, as I'm sure everyone did, and hope for a full & fast recovery.

 

When the hit 1st happened, my reaction was the same as everyone else.  Dirty. Unnecessary.  I was kind of angry.

 

But then the entire NFL community goes into self-righteous mode about a play in a game that is inherently violent.  We all watch replays countless times in slo-mo, and think that players who are playing the game at a high speed can adjust on a dime. And there is also the consideration that some QB's try to game the rules around sliding a bit, and trick defenses.  That slide yesterday did appear to be one that was started late, after or simultaneous to the defender positioning for the hit.

 

Obviously, the NFL has to protect QB's.  The hit WAS unnecessary - but I think the reaction against the player has been over the top.  If a player has a pattern of illegal hits & dirty play, that's a different story.  

 

I just hate how this stuff gets so black & white, and people turn into villains instantly.

Super dirty. Deserves to be made into a villain. Arguably the dirtiest hit in the NFL in the last 5 years based on degree of impact, how long the defender had to stop and the injury sustained.

 

It was a dirty play. Full stop. Zero excuse. Don’t do ***** like that then cry that no one supports you.

Dude used the arm with the elbow brace to hit a sliding QB in the face as hard as possible. Not a lot of gray area there. As dirty as Gronk on Tre.

Dirty play…he had plenty of time to at least somewhat pull up and at the very least not freakin elbow drop a sliding qb.   Demeco defending him in that press conference sounded like an absolute clown and I’m sure they made a lot of enemies

It was a dirty hit. One of the dirtier I've seen recently. I've seen the replay a bunch of times and Lawrence starts his slide way before Al-Shaair commits. Al-Shaair could absolutely have missed him. I would suspend Al-Shaair for 2-4 games.

I find it extremely comical there’s some effort on TBD to defend that play.

 

If someone did that to Josh and concussed him, Bills fans would send death threats.

It was dirty when that player ran behind Jim McMahon picked him up and dumped him on his head 30 years ago 

 

This was within the bounds of what happens on a football field over the last 30 40 50 60 70 years 

 

It was dirty when the hauschka was walking off the field versus the Jets and he got blindsided out of the play 

 

This is a penalty, but at the speed of the game it happens.. I don't think that dude woke up today and said I'm going to kill Trevor Lawrence

Yeah. I think that’s where I’m at but it’s still an awful decision by Al-Shaair. 
 

Absolutely a dirty hit as he could have pulled out and rolled over him instead of driving the braced forearm and his weight into Trevor. However, I don’t think he intended to injure or even knock out Lawrence. 

Bad choice, awful outcome.

There's a difference between a penalty, in the world's most physical game.. where the speed is immense 

 

Vs waking up and saying I'm going to hurt someone with intent on the field

 

When Jim McMahon got body slammed on his head after the play that's not within football... A player who is getting hit while sliding even if it is a penalty... Is within football because these are grown men running around at 20 miles an hour playing a dangerous game 

 

If you're afraid to hit the quarterback you're going to lose.. it's not like he had five seconds to react we're talking milliseconds

I agree w/ this.  I think we always underestimate how fast this game is.  And until recently, big hits were prominently celebrated, most notably on the "jacked up!" segment prior to MNF.

 

There is an appropriate reaction to what happened, but I think the overall reaction has veered into hypocrisy.  It's a tough, fast game - I don't think he set out to hurt Lawrence. There are players who DO play the game dirty, but one bang-bang kind of play doesn't define a guy.
