McDermott’s Post Game speech deserves its own thread

For all those that tend to find all the faults and warts this team has, I think you are truly missing the boat here.  It's ok to criticize the team, but just enjoy what it is that us as fans have right now.  Even though there hasn't been a SuperBowl championship that has been won yet, enjoy the moment.   Enjoy what it is that we are witnessing here.  We are going to miss having Josh Allen when he retires, we are going to miss all the plays that he makes, the character and leadership he has shown and the personification of what a Buffalo Bills play should be.

 

I am savoring every moment I have while he is at the helm.

Nothing wrong with giving honor and respect to another great Bills' coach.

 

It is another demonstration of the high character that McDermott has.

 

Try enjoying this era of our Bills instead of finding some ridiculous issue to complain about.

We Bills fans can be a tough room. Coach hit all the right notes in his post game. Honored the past, reminded them, and us all about the temporal nature of life. That’s where his wisdom lives. On the field, his team has run the table with a decimated receiving corp and team that was rebuilding (remember). I have been very critical of this coach and joined many who doubted his ability to get a ring. He has shown us something this year. It turns out his push to improve the run game is a league wide trend. He has learned from his losses to KC. Instead of looking tight, he’s making snow angels.  Yes, we celebrate on victory Monday then move on. This team has the talent, the intangibles, the experience and the Quarterback to climb the mountain. Sean McDermott is Buffalo’s Coach. Five straight division titles show he should stay Buffalo’s Coach for a long time.

"Pegula in the background" -- that is one of the keys to our franchise, he does not mess with the football men.  Ask the Jets about Woody!  I always say how lucky we are to have Beane and McDermott, but Pegula is almost (just?) as important.  I was at the Dolphins game in 2014 after he just bought the team.  As I am sure many here were.  I had cringed for months at the prospect of owner Trump or Bon Jovi - or the Toronto Bills.  I remember all the "Pegulaville."  signs walking to The Ralph.  And many signs saying "staying" or "were not leaving" - which broke out in chants all day.  Thankful for the big guy.

I think McDermott has shown alot of resiliency and has continued to grow as a head coach. 

Something that is a huge positive is unlike some of the other coaches Terry has hired, McDermott isn't a grifter who is ambivalent towards or trying to harm the Bills.  

 

He is someone who has a vision and he is very loyal. He is responsible for setting the culture for the team. Right now the vibes and morale is great with the team maybe the best I've ever seen. McDermott gets the credit for keeping the team together and happy. We have no further to look than in our own division to see the dysfunction/rot and chaos other coaches have brought to bear. Heck on that note look at the Bears.

And his speech was about the Bills and its organization, its history (mentioned playoff drought, Josh passing Jim Kelly, Terry hiring Sean and Brandon, Buffalo fans loving their football, etc.), so very appropriate to quote Marv. It was a good speech and I fault him for none of it.   But I also noticed this...  he referenced 5 straight AFCE championships and making the playoffs 7 of the past 8 years after 17 years of drought.  

 

How many players were there for all that?  None.  But McD was.   While he was giving them all the credit, he was reciting his own resume.  In other words, he was subtly reminding them of his personal accomplishments.  Not to feed his ego, I assume, but to reinforce his credibility to make him more effective as a leader and get players to buy into "the process" even more (or not stop buying in).   It's like a pirate captain reminding his crew of all  the good booty he helped them capture.

For years and years we all heard about "The Patriot Way."

 

It will probably take a Super Bowl win but at some point maybe we will start hearing the media talk about "The Bills Way."

 

It's easy to pick apart coaches for a decision or play call, and a GM for a draft pick or trade that didn't work out. But you have to look at the full body of work. 

 

Beane and McDermott have been outstanding and they aren't done yet.

Even as a part-time McD critic, I dont fault him for that toot of his own horn.

 

Also, I dont think many of these players need McD's help in capturing good booty. He's too much of a family man.

During the Russ Brandon/Dick Jauron era when the Bills roster was filled with mostly non-NFL caliber players, I saw a clip of a Kelly to Reed long TD pass from a playoff game.  It brought tears to my eyes remembering how good those 90s teams were compared to the then current iteration of the Bills.  As old time singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell said in her hit, "Big Yellow Taxi", "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got 'til it's gone?".

Somewhere in the multiverse, there's another version of the Bills that just plain sucks.  The GM sucks, the coach sucks, and the QB sucks.  And to make it all so much worse, that team doesn't play in Orchard Park - its home is in Toronto, or St. Louis, or San Antionio, or Mexico City because someone besides Terry bought the team.  

 

I so want Buffalo to win a Lombardi and I'm grateful for all three - Pegs, Beane, and McD - giving us realistic hope.

You missed the whole point.  Everyone wants the big one.  You can still enjoy the moment and appreciate it for what it is.

Think you nailed it - one of McDs best traits imo has been walking that line between having the respect of players while not being their "buddy", but still letting the players be themselves.  Josh has been asked multiple times about McD recently and he has mentioned how both him and McD have evolved together - him as a QB and McD as a caoach.  While McD used to be more micro-managing and regimented he has evolved to be bit looser while still having a firm control of the team, and letting the players have fun and show their personality.  "Be You With Us".  

 

The snow angel thing is so indicative to me of him trying to 'let his hair' down even though it is so out of character with how tightly he is wired.  It really seems like it is something he has really focused on to work on himself.

Yup. I was barely a teenager during the Super Bowl runs, young and dumb and just thought “well of course your team just goes to the championship every year, this isn’t special.” Not so much. Savor what you can while you can.

I’ve followed the bills since 1969, yea I’m praying for a championship too. But ive seen enough bad coaches and teams in Buffalo to appreciate the turnaround since 2017. So I have to disagree with that sentiment. This does matter. I really like this team and this quarterback. When I look around the NFL and see the massive sucking in places like carolina, Chicago,  New York, Jacksonville and Miami, I am grateful for these Bills. I will not hold the failures of the past against this team.
