McDermott’s Post Game speech deserves its own thread

I think this would be a good year to give McDermott a career achievement coach if the year award. Or maybe for having an excellent year while rebuilding. 
 

I think he’s especially deserving of the award this year. 
 

That and I took him at +2200 a few weeks ago.

I don't think it is unfortunate. I think it is the best. I love that about football. I like that there can be unexpected results some years because you can go out there and execute a game plan and play with everything you have for 60 minutes to topple the best teams in the league.

Not even being funny. My dad was a real POS. I wish I had a father like Sean McDermott. Say what u will about his coaching, but this is a man’s man through & through. There’s a lot to learn from him even as a bystander fan.

It can be done...The Indian Premier League (IPL) in cricket has four teams in the playoffs...where  1 plays 2 and 3 plays 4.  Loser of 1 vs 2 plays the winner of 3 vs 4.       This way the #2 seed still has a second chance to make the finals..

I've always stood up for McDermott. This year was the first time that I was feeling skeptical about his ability as a head coach to have the ability to bring us a championship.

 

I cursed him out after the Houston game this year, and really thought that we needed to consider moving on from him.

 

Since then, all the Bills have done is win, and McDermott deserves a lot of credit for that. The "rebuild year" for me ended when we got Amari Cooper. Now this team looks like they could something very special.

 

My apologies to Sean McDermott. This is why I'm a fan, and not a football executive.

I don't want anyone to have a 2nd chance. I want the losing team to go home, no matter how good they are. I like that about football.

Nothing lasts forever.   It's infinitely better to be considering playoff seedings rather than draft order in December.  If you don't believe that, ask Patriots fans about it.

There’s never a handbook or guide we parents are given to know how to be the perfect parent so hopefully you don’t hold his failings entirely against him. 
 

It takes an understanding of being patient, honest and loving to be great at a parent. You’ve just got to be shown how directly or indirectly for it to become a trait. He might have never had that chance unfortunately. 
 

I’ve learnt just as much from my coaches over the years as I have my parents. They’re integral to the development and continuation of strong character morals and values, something I wholeheartedly agree about Sean; a bystander, by watching and listening to him, can pick up of high quality integrities if they don’t have them already.

He deserves it this year but you can make a case for Jim Harbaugh, Nick Sirianni, Dan Campbell, Sean Payton, and Mike Tomlin as well.

I think he does a great job of striking the correct balance between "I am the coach"  but "I am also one of you"

 

The team seems to respect him as a leader him but also really likes him as a friend

Indeed, I suffered the drought fairly well, but having been spoiled with JA17 and McBeane it'll be hard to ever do that again!

And fans could look at last night's opponents: the 49ers were THE odds favorite to win the Superbowl during this offseason. They are 5-7. They have had so many injuries, it's crazy. Remember a few years back when Purdy, then the 3rd string QB, got hurt, and they were down to their 4th QB in the playoffs, who got injured so Purdy came back and could not  throw passes? I had never seen something like that.

 

Anyway, my point is that even the Bills could have an awful season, yet here we are. Enjoy! Of course, I too would be so disappointed without a Superbowl, but while the Bills and McD can, for sure, win it all, so can 4-5 other teams.  Luck and injuries do matter.

How many players were there for all that?  None.  But McD was.   While he was giving them all the credit, he was reciting his own resume.  In other words, he was subtly reminding them of his personal accomplishments.  Not to feed his ego, I assume, but to reinforce his credibility to make him more effective as a leader and get players to buy into "the process" even more (or not stop buying in).   It's like a pirate captain reminding his crew of all  the good booty he helped them capture.  

 

 

 

I know you weren't knocking him for it, or thinking it was coming from a place of ego. But, I don't really think it was about his credibility either. I do agree with you that he was sending a message to the team, but that message was don't take it for granted. Don't take winning for granted. Don't take being part of a great organization for granted. Don't take these fun moments with the fans and your friends and teammates for granted. Cherish this...and yes, remember what it takes to have these moments and don't become complacent. Humble and hungry, Pride in putting on a Bills uniform, etc.

 

And just to note:

-Eleven players have been with McD for all 5 consecutive AFC East Championships (Josh, Tyler, Dion, A.J., Reid, Reggie, Taron, Dawson, Cam, Matt, and Ed).

 

-Folks who have been here since 2018 (7 of 8 years with McD): 6 players, 9 coaching staff members, 7 front office members, and 2 owners. That's 24 people. And that's without even looking into who may be left from departments such as scouting, equipment, business, communications, information tech, marketing, player engagement, community outreach, analytics, trainers, medical, etc., etc. Sean doesn't just see players and coaches, he constantly talks about "the whole building," down to the cafeteria staff, janitors, and stadium personnel. Plus he includes the fans. Not that he doesn't deserve a tip of his own cap, but I think that was the furthest thing from his mind.

 

-And there are actually 3 players still on the team that have been with Sean all eight years (since 2017): Dion Dawkins, Matt Milano, and Reid Ferguson.
