"Do not get involved" President Biden to Address Nation on War in Syria and X Users Wonder How Much This Is Gonna Cost Us So. Syria. There's a lot going on over there, but the CliffsNotes version is this: about two weeks ago, Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other rebels launched an attack in the north, and quickly overtook the city of Aleppo before moving on Damascus. Yesterday, Damascus fell and Bashar al-Assad stepped down after ruling since his father died in 2000. Despite Kamala Harris' asinine claim during the debates that there were no American troops in combat zones, there are 900 troops in Syria right now, and President Biden (yeah, he's still president, we guess) is going to address the nation about it: What could possibly go wrong? https://twitchy.com/amy-curtis/2024/12/08/biden-to-address-country-on-syria-n2404863 There It Is: Biden Vows to Send Our Tax Dollars to Rebuild New Syrian Regime Boy, did we call it or what? Earlier this afternoon we told you how President Joe Biden planned to address the nation about the ongoing regime change in Syria. Damascus has fallen and newly freed prisoners are eyeing a trip to America (because of course), and we all asked how much of our tax dollars would be going to the beleaguered Middle East nation. Well, Biden addressed the nation and now we know: While Americans in North Carolina are still sleeping in tents. In winter. https://twitchy.com/amy-curtis/2024/12/08/biden-vows-aid-to-new-syrian-regime-n2404877 2 1
Tiberius Posted December 9 Posted December 9 JFK: Victory has a thousand fathers, defeat is a lonely orphan https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/12/09/syria-war-news-israel-hamas-gaza-lebanon/ In an address Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the collapse of the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria was “a direct result of the blows” Israeli forces “have dealt to Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran.” “As I promised, we are reshaping the Middle East,” Netanyahu said. The regime’s fall has further isolated Hamas, he said. Israeli forces have moved from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights into the demilitarized strip between Israel and Syria, and into Syrian territory beyond, in what Israel’s defense minister said Monday was a bid to “eliminate potential threats.” ______ The crumbling of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria is bound up in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday in a statement posted to Telegram. He called for “steadfast support” from Ukraine’s partners. He credited Assad’s ouster to a lack of support from Russia, a key Assad ally, because of its focus on fighting in Ukraine. If “Ukraine falls, Putin will return to Syria to take revenge,” Zelensky said. === Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the militant group that led the push to topple the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, announced on Monday “a general amnesty for all military personnel conscripted under compulsory service” to fight for the Assad government. “Their lives are safe and no one may assault them,” the group said in a statement. Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden announced Monday that all decisions on open Syrian asylum claims have been frozen, a move that affects thousands. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in a post on X that she supports the decision by Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, “given this unclear situation.” Since 2011, about 1 million people have fled Syria to Germany. This is pretty big, the refugree crisis that has fueled a lot of right wing passion in Europe might get a brake. Putin loses a big weapon to influence Europe and Africa. Syrian families and other refugees have begun the journey back to the country many of them fled over a decade ago at the outbreak of civil war. Photos from after Bashar al-Assad’s regime fell Sunday show men, women and children waiting at border crossings from Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. Those returning to Syria face an uncertain future, and it’s not clear how many are choosing to come home. The International Organization for Migration, a United Nations agency, said Monday that no precise number is available because “the situation is evolving by the minute.” “While this is a time of great hope, it’s winter in Syria, and the needs are enormous,” the IOM added. “The country’s infrastructure has been devastated, and we need to ensure people have shelter, food, health care, water and protection services.” On Sunday, Bachir Khodr, governor of the Baalbek-Hermel region of Lebanon, claimed that “thousands” of Syrians and Lebanese had crossed the border from Syria, while pro-Hezbollah social media groups shared requests for people to open their doors. 1

The Frankish Reich Posted December 10 Posted December 10 The world is complicated. There is no such thing as "keeping out of it." The old Machiavellian "my enemy's enemy is my friend" won't work here. The rebels in Syria are Iran's enemy. They're Russia's enemy. Does that make them our friends? No. Do we try to support stability in Syria under their control? That could be a folly and make us more enemies. Do we stand back and see how it plays out? That may open the door for Iran to step back in as the regional superpower. To do something is to choose sides. To do nothing is to choose sides. Remember that the next time you want to dismiss all this as "we don't have a dog in this fight" Trumpism. 1
