I'm also A-Ok with HTS severing the landward supply lines between Iran and its proxies. If they kick Russia out of Latakia and Tartus, so much the better. In the end, it's up to Turkey, Israel and Saudi Arabia to police the Middle East. Agree about the US role, it's really going to come down to how sincere HTS is building a legit, respectful, and tolerant government. Otherwise the country will descend into chaos with multiple countries trying to tip that balance in their favor. I expect the new government will work an agreement with Russia to allow their bases to remain in exchange for recognition. 1
Tiberius Posted December 8 Posted December 8 Washpost: Amid a rebel offensive that stunned the Syrian regime and led to major losses of territory, the 42-year-old man leading it made a surprising strategic decision: He used his real name. In an official message Thursday after its fighters entered Hama, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) Islamist militant group shared a message that was signed Ahmed al-Sharaa — the birth name of a rebel leader better known by his nom de guerre, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani. Get concise answers to your questions. Try Ask The Post AI. The move marks a broader shift for Jolani. Once a shadowy figure who rarely showed his face, Jolani served time in a U.S. prison in Iraq before becoming the commander of an al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria’s brutal, multipronged civil war. Even now, there is a $10 million U.S. reward for information that leads to his capture. But in recent weeks, Jolani has become the public face of the most successful rebel advance in Syria in years, credited as the driving force behind a stunning offensive that captured Syria’s second-largest city, Aleppo, from forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Tiberius Posted December 8 Posted December 8 Assad’s prospects began to deteriorate, almost unnoticed at first, amid the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in the aftermath of Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack. By decimating Hezbollah’s leadership and destroying much of its military capability, Israel undermined an essential pillar in Assad’s security infrastructure. Syria’s other benefactors, Iran and Russia, had become distracted meanwhile by problems elsewhere, including Moscow’s war against Ukraine.

B-Man Posted December 8 Posted December 8 Damascus has fallen: Rebels declare a 'free Syria' as they swarm capital... while its brutal dictator flees by Joe Hutchinson Syrian rebels fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad have entered Damascus as they capped a stunning advance across the country. Residents of the capital have reported sounds of gunfire and explosions, with the insurgents announcing they had also liberated the Saydnaya military prison north of capital. On Saturday evening local time, opposition forces took the central city of Homs, Syria's third largest, as government forces abandoned it. The city stands at an important intersection between Damascus, the capital, and Syria's coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus - the Syrian leader´s base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14170031/Damascus-surrounded-rebels-swarm-Syrian-capital.html?ico=related-replace

"Do not get involved" President Biden to Address Nation on War in Syria and X Users Wonder How Much This Is Gonna Cost Us So. Syria. There's a lot going on over there, but the CliffsNotes version is this: about two weeks ago, Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other rebels launched an attack in the north, and quickly overtook the city of Aleppo before moving on Damascus. Yesterday, Damascus fell and Bashar al-Assad stepped down after ruling since his father died in 2000. Despite Kamala Harris' asinine claim during the debates that there were no American troops in combat zones, there are 900 troops in Syria right now, and President Biden (yeah, he's still president, we guess) is going to address the nation about it: What could possibly go wrong? https://twitchy.com/amy-curtis/2024/12/08/biden-to-address-country-on-syria-n2404863
