Why would he get blamed for terrible execution? He didn't snap the ball. Essentially threw off the timing of the whole play...most don't realize this but the execution of a field goal/XP is the single most technical thing that happens in an NFL game.

 

Snap, hold and kick all must happen within 1.6 seconds or it usually will fail. If anything goes minorly wrong it usually will fail because the footwork for a kicker and the timing of his steps is going to determine where the ball goes and that bad snap delays the hold enough so that it throws off his step timing.

 

As soon as that bad snap happened the likelihood of him making that kick likely went from around 95% to around 20%.

I hate the Chiefs but I respect them. Their ability to pull out any win against any opponent in the final minutes is uncanny. They are not a great team in the sense that they dominate their opponents, it's the fact that they just find wins. In fact I would say the team I've watched this year is the best one they've had in the Mahomes era for that reason. You are what your record says you are. They can't be stopped unless one individual player steps up and makes a magic play of his own in the final minutes. That's what their record tells us.

Again how about giving up two kick returns for TD's?

Yeah it's just pattern recognition, I have no desire to get invested in or watch the Chiefs pretend to maybe lose a game only to just win at the end.

 

If I wanted an experience like that I could just drop my bowling ball on my foot every week.

Eventually your luck runs out in those type of games when even a single mistake leads to a loss.

 

You can only live on a razors edge for so long before you get badly cut at the most inopportune time.

It isn't just Mahomes. Yes some weeks he is the one that steps up and makes the clutch play to seal the game in the final moments, like he did this week, but it is a cycle of different players on any given week. Chris Jones, Harrison Butker, whoever blocked that FG against Denver, you name it. They come into every game with an immediate psychological advantage. Honestly I think the Bills are the only team that they don't have that advantage against, in the regular season at least.

We've seen the Chiefs a lot this year. The best they have played was in their only loss. They look like a team sleepwalking through a regular season and expect to flip a switch in the playoffs.
