Downtown Buffalo has always been a stop-and-go for red lights. Easily since the 90s.

When I met my wife she drove a powder blue Ford Pinto with no A/C (but it did have a sunroof to speed up the cooking process) and a stick shift. Her families home was in a rolling, winding hilly area. With stop signs. It was much easier to do what they call the “Carolina Roll” thru stop signs. 

 

She had so many points she had to take driving classes to keep her license! 

 

To this day she will kid at a stop sign and as soon as we come to a complete stop she says “Stop. S-T-O-P. Stop.”  😂

I suppose it's the whole "don't tread on me" movement... BUT, then again, wasn't Timothy McVeigh first pulled over, then apprehended because he had no license plates raised suspicion...

Way back when, during Drivers Ed in high school, if the teacher (who was also the local Chief of Police) felt that you did not stop long enough at a stop sign, you would have to get out and apologize to it.  And to ensure that lots of people knew you screwed up, he would roll up all the windows and turn the radio up, because if he could not hear you from inside the car, you were not doing it right.  He even had a printout of what to say to the stop sign for you to read.

I'll say one thing, I drive a heckuva lot faster now than I did when I moved out of WNY.  Part of it is driving on 95 regularly where if you aren't going 10 over the limit you're in danger of getting killed. Part of it is that local PA cops aren't allowed to have radar so there aren't nearly as many speed traps as there are in NY. Part of it is the speed limits have all gone up.  When I was going back and forth across the state as a college student the limit on the PA Tpk was 55. Now it's 70.

 

A couple weeks ago I got passed on Rt. 1 by a guy easily going 110+. Easily.  Then a couple seconds later a state trooper went flying by.  Then about 30 seconds after that 2 more staties flew by.  We eventually caught up to the whole group and waved on the way by. That gentleman was having a bad day. Very bad.

Sounds exactly like the sort of guy you'd want to hand all sorts of power.

Actually, he was a really great guy.  The only people that did not like him, were the type to always be in trouble with the law.
