Waivers or no?

It's my understanding after the trade deadline is passed, every player must go through waivers.

If I'm wrong, I feel very confident that someone will correct me.

Even if you are right, someone will correct you.

Heard on the radio this morning that he's gaurenteed 23 mil if he's injured before the end of the season. If I'm him, I'm breaking a leg in practice. Probably why they let him go

Late to the post..

Insert Kevin Kolb bringing a mat to a practice coming soon 😃

He's not coming here.

Mitch is buds with Josh.  That's the top qualification for Bills backup QB.

How about a backup that won't totally sink the team if they have to play?

Please tell me that is not true?

It's very true.

Can you imagine the feeling?  One week you're a starting NFL QB - if not a very successful one.  The next week you're wearing a red jersey lining up as the scout team safety.

The scout team safety thing is wild. You have to just release him at that point.

Why in the world would they do something like that except to humiliate him? Crazy.

I think Daniel Jones gets a look as a possible starter from somewhere like Tennessee or Vegas. He's not great but I think he'd be an upgrade at starting QB for Vegas, Tennessee, Carolina, New England, Chicago (not gonna happen), and the Jets. He never got much of a shot behind an OL that wasn't bottom of the league at pass protection.

And yeah wtf is with the Giants putting him at practice team safety, that's embarrassing for the Giants

The article I read said they had him on the scout team at safety but he wasn't allowed to run or make contact so I'm not really sure what the "playing safety" part even means.

I also had read (sorry if already stated but I only read the first two pages and the last few posts) that he was told feel free to stay home the rest of the season. The Giants wanted to play him and he wanted to play but the risk of injury guarantees kicking in wouldn't allow for that. They tried to have him waive the injury guarantees, his agent negotiated with the Giants but couldn't come to an agreement. He was willing to waive part but not the entire injury guarantee. It didn't give any indication of how much he was willing to waive.

I don’t think he’s going to join a bum team.  If we’re him i’d join a good franchise with a good coaching staff and be a backup next season.  Learn.  Improve.  Then hopefully he can apply that the following year, similar to what Baker and Darnold did.

He may not have that chance immediately - Mayfield had to Carolina then pay a visit to the Rams before he got a chance at Tampa

Darnold also had to Carolina then pay a visit to SFO before he got a chance in Minn

Geno Smith had to Giants and Charger then sit on the bench for 2 years in Seattle before he got his 2nd chance.

If a team claims Jones off waivers, he's pretty much gotta go

And sometimes it doesn't seem to work - see Trubisky, Mitch - he seems to be irrevocably broken

I don’t think there’s even a .01 chance someone claims him. That contract-  the 23m injury kicker.  Would have to be a really dumb team to claim him, alas, there are some dumb teams.

I think he ends up in SF.

It means he was asked to position himself as they anticipate the opponent's safety will in different coverage looks and shift around pre-snap, so that the starting QB practices diagnosing the coverage and what his throw should be, based on the position of the safety.  Otherwise the scout team may lack the personnel to position a safety and an inexperienced QB may fail to build in observing the safety when he's deciding where to go with the ball.

There was a time in 2019 when there were clips of Josh taking handoffs in practice and asking the coach "is there a safety over there?".  I think it was after that Davis Webb volunteered to play scout team safety (except he ran and made contact)

Good point that if the team claims him, they claim the injury guarantee.  I hadn't thought of that.   But he still may not get the immediate opportunity to pick "a good team".

SF would actually be a good landing spot.

Giving some benefit of the doubt, I think the Giants were just asking him to help the team prepare.

I don't think they thought about how it would look to NFL fans or that Jones would likely feel some way about it.

Waivers means you have to pay them their original salary IIRC

Yep. And there are some teams that are nowhere at QB right now. But no one's going to pick up the remainder of his contract.

He'll clear waivers and end up somewhere like Dallas or Las Vegas for the remainder of the year.

To the OP's subtitle - I don't see it. Although he is almost literally Mitch Trubisky 2.0, Mitch's route of Redshirting himself for a year on a team where he has practically a 0% chance of seeing the field following being a long term starter isn't a common one.

If he doesn't stick with whatever team grabs him this season, he'll more likely sign on with a team that is Drafting a Rookie QB, a team that has a shaky starter, a team that is bringing in vets for a competition, a team that has a QB coming off injury or who is often injured. Buffalo fits none of those and that's why our Backup options are usually not great.

As it is, we'd have to release Mitch first - which I don't see as being likely either. We signed him to a 2 year 5.25m dollar deal of which 3.71m was guaranteed. As is often the case, the board's feeling on a player doesn't always match up with the front office. And I think Mitch is one of those cases. I think they'd much sooner ask him to take a pay cut than outright cut him - if anything at all.
