This whollle thing is not a great look for Schoen and Daboll. Yikes.

Honestly, it was pretty well thought that it was ownership that pushed them to re-sign Jones. Still doesn't feel like they really did enough over the last 2 years to give him pieces to improve the offense.

As far as his future and bringing him here, I think I may want him as a backup more than Trubiski. But he will get some better opportunities to see the field IMO. The Raiders should be in on him and depending on what they truly think of Lance, Dallas taking him for the rest of the season makes some sense too.

he has won 9 games

Jones 24

He was a legit top 5 qb in the nfl before massage envy and Cleveland.

jones has maybe been a 15-20 ish qb once in his career.

I'm reading Jones asked to be released.

There is also a 70m dead cap hit.

Look like daboll and Schoen are getting fired

If I'm a Giants fan, I want to know if Mara was behind them re-signing Jones or not.

If he was then they should keep both of them and let them run the club.

Too many people get hung up on the numbers.  He has not been asked to be the #1 receiving TE but he plays more snaps than Kincaid.  He is, in effect, an additional offensive lineman who can also get down the field and catch.  He's valuable to this team in a number of ways and his contract is not a burden.

Like I said...bad take.

Well, I think yours is also a very bad take (it doesn’t mean you don’t like the bills if you don’t think everything they do isn’t perfect). Blocking TEs (more athletic Lee Smiths are all over the place in the NFL) who can catch 18 passes/ year are a dime/ dozen. Great guy, bad contract. Agree to disagree.

There have been a lot of bad QB contracts over the years, and while Jones was overpaid, his contract isn't close to being the worst. Ryan Leaf went 4-17, had a 48.8 lifetime rating (very hard to do!), and a career TD/INT ratio of 14 to 36. (Jamarcus Russell was bad too, but not THAT bad: 7-18 with a 65.2 rating.) Leaf's rookie contract was 6 years/31.25 million. Different era, but it ate a ton of cap up, which is all that really matters when you're talking about NFL player salaries.

Daniel Jones, who I think will be a career backup, actually had a LEGIT good season in 2022 - 708 rushing yards, 5.9 ypc, 22 total TDs (15 passing TDs, 7 rushing), the lowest interception rate in the league, and a very respectable 62.9 QBR. He had an AV of 15 (via PFR), which is very good. As a complete QB (not just measuring one counting stat but looking at his production in its totality), he had a good season. The offense overall was 15th in points/18th in yards (middle of the pack) and second in fewest turnovers surrendered.

Yeah I think he has "team signs him to a 1 year deal to compete to start but then drafts a rookie in the 1st round" written allll over him. Then he either never gets to play or only plays the "sacrificial first four games before we turn it over to the rookie" role.

After THAT, he'll become the backup for the Buffalo Beews.

It's not $70 million dead cap.  The dead cap is a lot lower. The cap # this season is $47,855,000 but all but the salary of $35,500,000 has already been accounted for.  So his dead cap is actually 7/17ths of $35,500,000 or $14,617,647 the remainder of this year & the remaining pro rated signing bonus of $22,200,000 next year (total $36,817,647 spread out over 2024 & 2025).

Honestly, Rodgers is done... QB draft is not elite... now I could see the Jets reaching... but I have a suspicion he becomes a 1 yr bridge in NY just switches lockers.

Dawson Knox is far more talented and productive than Lee Smith ever was. He's a pretty good player although certainly not elite. Maybe moderately overpaid, but he's he's not killing the Bills salary-wise and he's probably still worth $4-5 million per year. He would easily have gotten that (at least) on the open market a couple of years ago.

I think the owner was the driving force behind it. Not absolving the coach and GM from blame because the owner wanted Saquan back too and they went against his wishes but from everything you hear out of there the owner was all in on Jones.

I think the owner signed the check... so he is responsible... if he was taking the advice of Daboll and Schoen then they are gone... then again... they are gone anyways we may never know LOL

What are the cap ramifications of releasing him now?

It eliminated any chance of his injury guarantees kicking in for next season. $27M of his $30M 2025 salary is guaranteed for injury so that would be a huge hit if he injured himself working out at the facility. His salary would have fully guaranteed on day 5 of the league year. If he could not pass a physical by then due to a football related injury then they’d be on the hook for that money.

No word on if there are offsets to his current salary. That would have a minimal impact on the cap because another team would just sign him for vet minimum and the Giants would get credit for what they pay him this season.

I guess the best way to put it is not using rookie contracts, who’s the least accomplished qb to receive a receive a sizable 2nd contract (using the money of their era)? I think Jones is in the discussion. In an era where every qb is like 80s Dan Marino, Jones was putting up 70s passing stats.

I was going through the teams that could possibly sign him in my head, and I think the funniest possible outcomes would be:

- Dallas signs him this year and he continues to start in the NFC East

- The Bears sign him next year to compete with Caleb Williams and Jones winds up winning the job at some point and Bears fans go from the jubilation of drafting 1st rounder Justin Fields, to the disappointment of actually seeing him play, to the jubilation of drafting 1st rounder Caleb Williams, to the disappointment of actually seeing him play, to being resigned to watching a Daniel Jones reclamation project

- The Raiders sign him next year. Their fans go from Gardner Minshew to Aidan O'Connell to Daniel Jones. WE ARE LAUGHING.

All in all, I think I'm rooting for the Bears outcome, just for comedy's sake.
