Most people think of a pass catcher as a third down back but that is just the tiniest part of their role

A true third down back is like Kevin Faulk who won multiple super bowls with the Patriots

A super steady blocker, who is able to get out of the backfield and then become a reliable Target

And then offer some running ability

A passcatcher out of the backfield who can't block consistently is not an ideal 3rd down back

I wrote upstream , would be ideal to keep all 3 with no response. But the skills sets each of Cook Davis and Ty overlap just enough , but also cover a wide range of  variations the offense can run well from week to week, and even from 1st half to 2nd. Situational football and Brady has the tools in the backfield

What happened to Gilliam. Is he in the field for plays...or is he just occupying extra space on the roster?

Still on the Roster ! ST and a few snaps here and there. I think they love him by now :)

Ty Johnson has turned into the best blocker in the running back stable. I think this group of running backs is really excellent. Different styles and strengths. All of them pretty darn effective.

Yes, this is the best group of Bills RBs in a long time.

My usual gripe here about the Not extending , regardless of player , is short sighted a tad ?

How about a "reasonable extension "

Would love to keep all 3 rbs for another season at this rate of performance. Within reason :)

I want them to pay Cook. He has unique size, speed,  and skillset, isn’t made of glass, and rarely fumbles.

I'd love to be able to keep Cook too. He might not be "elite" but he's absolutely a difference maker and a home run hitter. With all of the extension-eligible Bills there's the hope that they'll accept an early contract instead of testing the open market. If Cook makes it to the open market it's not hard imagining the Bills being outbid for his services. At that point you hope he takes the hometown discount.

Cook usually "Ole's" on his blocks and the guy runs right around him more often than not.  Every once in a while he has a solid one but not too often.

Best blocking back they had with Allen was Zack Moss as a rookie...he was like Stonewall Jackson back there and just would be annihilating blitzers and standing them straight up.

When we drafted Davis I went for his highlight reel. The running was obviously impressive (it IS highlights), but what stood out to me most was there was an entire section of him in pass protection. He was VERY willing and effective, and it wasn’t just a few plays.

Understanding protections and the willingness to engage are important but body type helps A LOT. For a guy like Cook there's often gonna be someone bigger than him running full speed at him. Cook is a pretty slightly-built guy (pretty sure the bye week helped him recover from the collision on his second TD run).

Larry Centers was elite in this regard.

Gilliam plays an entirely different role from Cook, Davis, and Johnson.  Gilliam has pretty much the same numbers as he had last season, 85% of special team snaps and 9% of offensive snaps.
