Finally someone said it. Shanahan might be a good coach, but everything has to be exactly how he wants it. He would not do well with a QB like Josh Allen.

 

I, for one, think Shanahan is overrated.

I honestly don't know if there would be a difference? Burrow has thrown for over 800 yards and 9'TDs against Baltimore this year and they lost both games.

 

I am not sure what more he can do this season 

 

Isn't the argument being made that they can afford to have all these players on offense because Purdy is on a rookie contract, and is doing enough to at least keep them in post season contention?

I would take Allen even if he wasn't "our guy". Burrow is a great qb and has been prolific this year, no doubt about it. But he also has two elite receivers with a coach who can scheme a modern passing offense. Additionally, game script has helped him pump those passing yards this season.

I know I'm not arguing that burrow is better as I would take Josh as well.

My original point was W-L record is not a quarterback stat and I was using Joe burrow and the bengals as an example

Once waivers are claimed I can see Daniel Jones taking the league minimum for a chance to be out of the spotlight, but get ready for us, allow Purdy to really heal, and get ready for the playoffs.  They can still do it.

 

Jones would finally have a line to protect hi and more than one weapon.  Jones plays a game or two, is probably the best backup in the league and can show what he can do not in a  dumpster fire.  
 

I hope Purdy is ok as he’s a good QB and bucking the odds in Mr. Irrelevant.

Context is the first thing to go when people compare quarterbacks. What quality receivers is he throwing to? How many times was his team behind and he had to throw vs. ahead and didn't throw (or score)? What kind of running game and defense does he have to rely on? What teams did he play? Did he have a good offensive line? Were his coaches competent? What factor did injuries play? 

 

I don't think I've ever seen an analysis that took even half these factors into account. It's always "X is the GOAT" or "How many trophies does Y have?"

 

I (grudgingly) respect Brady because he won with a wide range of teams and against every kind of opponent. I respect Allen because he won with a mediocre team around him, at least early on. I respect Marino because he incredible things all by himself. But I've always been skeptical of Mahomes because he's had every last thing a quarterback could want: great receivers, coach, line, defense, luck...the works. Burrow? I'd say the jury is still out.

I think Shanahan is a great coach but I can’t deny anything Gunner has said. He has his system and you better run it exactly as designed.

I think he is one of the best offensive play designers of all time. But he is stubborn as hell and if you don't run it his way he doesn't want you.

You might be onto something here. He could very well be their best player, but maybe not their most impactful. Bosa is that guy IMO

Wow. Bills fans have a much higher opinion of Zac Taylor as an offensive mind than the people that follow that team day in and day out. Most of Cincinnati want him fired for a lack of creativity in the offensive scheme. They think his most commonly called play is "Go long Ja'Marr!"

Bosa is certainly an impact player with that motor, but every time I happen to flip on a 9ers game it just inevitably turns into the Fred Warner show.

Shoulder injuries are so tricky.  I never experienced one until Fall 2023.  Ironically it happened from just messing around throwing the football w friends.  Couldn’t lift my arm up above the shoulder at all, could not throw. Could not sleep comfortably.  The pain was intense.  They said it was an impingement, and bursitis.  A year later and after therapy and all sorts of stuff it feels better, but not nearly 100%.  i will not throw a ball hard again. 

 

Now Brock Purdy is in the prime of his athletic career and will heal faster than some middle age guy.  But i have a new appreciation for QB shoulder injuries. I think it’s the worst kind of injury to have for QB.

I hope they're looking at Purdy's neck.  I had a lot of pain in my shoulder at one point, and it turned out to be my neck.  I mean, it was my shoulder too (I needed to strengthen a bunch of small supporting muscles) but the genesis of the pain was in my neck.  Injection in my neck calmed things down to the point where I could do the shoulder exercises.

FYI, weather for next Sunday currently looking like 25 degrees at kickoff with snow most of the day (and week), with winds around 10 mph. Fun times!

The 9ers line hasn't actually been that great this year.

Glad I posted this as it is getting to a more serious level where it will affect him either not playing or be a big issue for him playing the Bills game. Even if the 49ers sign a guy like Daniel Jones, I don't think there is enough time to prep him to play against the Bills.

 

49ers wait for him to clear waivers and lets say he immediately signs with the 49ers which is hard to believe, they would fly him out Tuesday morning and have to get him a physical, the playbook etc and get him on the practice field Wednesday. He'd get 2 days of practice and a walkthough before getting on a plane to play against the Bills. Just can't see it happening. If Purdy plays we are most likely getting Brandon Allen.

I think the offense run by Daboll and Shannahan are two different.  You can't expect Jones to just drop into Santa Clara and somehow take the 49ers to the playoffs.
