As a Michigan alum and fan, and also a lifelong Bills fan, I'm conflicted.  On one hand, I'd prefer of the Bills came up with something original, rather than something that's been done somewhere else already.  On the other hand, it's cool that my two favorite teams have something in common.

There's enough negativity in the world, so I'll go with the latter and enjoy that my two favorite teams have something in common.  While I've always thought it an odd song for football, it clearly works.  The fans love it and the players seem to respond to it, so why not?

I am torn on the Mr. brightside thing. It is a catchy song, but the lyrics/meaning are so unbelievably out of place to be played at a football game.

It just feels bizarre that that is the Bills song. It’s about some dude catching his girlfriend cheating!

anyone have a similar reaction?

It is so so strange. I think it’s all because of one line “destiny is calling me”.

But other than that it’s one of the weirdest song choices lyrically speaking.

This generations Don't Stop Believing.  Catchy sing along song bar song.  Happened pretty organically.  Players are into it.  Fans are into it.  Keep up the vibes and keep it going imo.  Is it “cool”?  No. Is it fun?  Ya I think so.

I don’t know. All the stadium anthems that I can think of have strong and relevant lyrical ties.

For example, “don’t stop believing” at Detroit red wings games. That ties naturally to basically the “don’t stop believing we are going to win” and the lyric about being “raised in south Detroit.”

Same with renegade. Those opening lyrics are a perfect metaphor for the Steelers defense about to wreak havoc! On the video during Steelers games, you see it clearly, as they show that defense just wrecking people— the hangman coming!

but I can’t find a single lyric in Mr. Brightside that works for a football game or the Bills, even as a metaphor! Great song, but way too lyrically specific.

It's just the price I pay, DESTINY IS CALLING ME. HELLO

It's the Vibes + the actual message of the song... The message isn't about being cheated on. It's about overcoming paranoia and the control of negative thoughts to become the best vision of yourself and embrace your true destiny.

Damn young people wanting their own rally songs, get off my lawn! 😁👍🍸🚬

It’s an old song though 😆. Like 20 years old.

They've been doing it at the Rangers games at MSG for a few years now.  Every fanbase seems to think it's their thing.

My unpopular opinion:  that song SUCKS.  It's manic, confined to a very narrow melodic range (basically just the same few notes over and over again), sung in a very nasal and annoying timbre.  I hate it.  It's a bland anthem about nothing.

Oh, come on, really?  All the stadium anthems you can think of?

"You really don't remember
Was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?"

Took the St Louis Blues from last place, firing their coach in November, to a Stanley Cup.  "Blues Win, Play Gloria!"

Can't find a single lyric in Mr Brightside that works.  Brief search:
"Comin' out of my cage and I've been doin' just fine
Gotta, gotta be down because I want it all"

"But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside
"

seem at least a little relevant.

You really can't logic these things.  The song chooses the team and they run with it.

Ha great wedding song about cheating.

I always joke w my wife our wedding song is Here I go Again by White Snake.... clearly a song about a breakup.

Or how about this, which I actually did hear at a wedding reception.  The couple is no longer together, don't know if the song choice had anything to do with it.

It has 2 BILLION plays on Spotify.  And I had never heard of it before this year. I feel so old and out of touch, probably because I am.

Sweet Caroline anyone???

Mr Brightside has been on the UK Top 40 for over a generation.  It's the unofficial national anthem of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. You can't go to a party, wedding, funeral, or festival without hearing it.

Don't feel bad.

Don't overthink it.  I can't think of many songs about throwing and kicking footballs.

It's a fun thing.  They play metal at many points in the game on defense. Pump up hip hop songs before and during the game.  All that. Time and a place.

As someone said, it's a vibe.  The crowd loves it and participates, the players love it.  There are a lot of fanbases who wish they could draw this kind of thing out of everyone.  Just have fun.

I didn't know or like the song prior to the perfect game use.  It instantly became one of my favorite moments at a bills game.  The bills were up by 30 on new england in the playoffs and everyone was still there bellowing out the lyrics.

Wish it was a different song, but it seems like it gives positive vibes throughout the fans and team. I suppose it gives a nice respite from the action on the field and provides a sort of refocus

It's the same sort of thing as "Allentown" and "Born in the USA". For whatever reason people just like to sing along and listen to the refrain.  They don't bother reading too deep into the lyrics, which are true and ***** depressing.

I hate to admit it, but the Pats coincidentally play a song about cheating every game too ("Your Love" by The Outfield) and it is way better than our new tradition.
