Do you have any "atypical" foods on your Thanksgiving table?

In recent years, we've started making homemade mac 'n' cheese on Thanksgiving day. Goes wonderfully with the rest of the spread. Not something I grew up with, but I'm glad we added it. I didn't think it was that odd, but many have said they've never had it on Thanksgiving.

Also, I grew up around a lot of Italians, and many made manicotti or ziti or whatnot in addition to the "usual" spread.

All of it got me thinking: Is there anything on your Thanksgiving table every year that isn't a typical Thanksgiving food? If so, what?

My first Thanksgiving with my wife’s Lebanese family was an eye opener. I’m at the table and ready for what we expect on that day. Out it comes, all the humus and grape leaves and kibbi and Laban and tabouleh and pita and…. WTF??? What IS this stuff? I had never heard of most of it before! 

 

Eventually my dear mother-in-law brought in a bird. A very well cooked bird. (The next year my wife did the bird, and her younger brother asked why wasn’t all dry like he was used to it. 😂)

 

We are pretty traditional now, but if her family is in town Lebanese food will be in the house, if not at the table.

I drunk doordash this too many nights out of the year to want to see it on my Thanksgiving Day table. It's enough of a surprise to see it on my kitchen counter most mornings.

How very……specific of you. Maybe a little history there? 

 

I’ve never used DoorDash or Uber Eats or any of that. I’ll have my pizza joint (who I recently learned is from Grand Island) deliver, but that’s about it. So it was a surprise when a friend called and said there was food at my door. I said, no, why would there be food at my door? Well, the last time he had been in that app he was at my house and left my address. He was clearly ashamed for us to see what he had ordered for himself. A stack of boxes of bar food piled as high as my knees! Mozzarella sticks, wings, potato skins, quesadillas, and any other crap you can think of! 

 

And he complains about his weight.  🤷‍♂️

Up here in the wild woods of ole northern Quebec, it's tradition to have fish on Thanksgiving, so we would end up cooking up a big old salmon for the family to feast on.

I've since turned the tide for their way of thinking and getting more people up here turned onto turkey.........turkey's my absolute favorite.

 

Don't get me wrong, i love salmon, but i love turkey even more.

Opening my door to find a stack of the foods you just mentioned -- which I didn't pay for or expect -- would be an absolute dream. Literal best case scenario in life.

As for the highly specific nature of my post to BringBackFlutie. Well....Let's just say the combined effects of a long day of tailgating, a bunch of homemade moonshine and jell-o shots, and a confiscated E-Pen made SOMEONE a grumpy and unreasonable drunkard, such that a perfectly well-delivered pizza at 11pm -- by virtue of not being visible to the compromised eyes of said drunkard despite its location exactly where it was supposed to be -- garnered an angry and unwarranted zero star rating on Doordash for the hapless delivery person who happened to draw the short straw on this unwinnable courier assignment.

TL;DR - drunks are jerks.

Duck rather than turkey and sometimes eel.  Our family is very small and we can never finish the turkey and our dog will devour a duck carcass.

I don't know if one of our family holiday traditions is atypical. It may be I'm not completely sure.  Appetizers before the actual Thanksgiving meal? I dunno

 

in our home we put out cut fruit and some cranberry orange muffins as well as a seafood platter with smoked oysters, shrimp, cocktail sauce, muenster cheese and Ritz crackers. All that is kept out until its meal time.

do you all know what spinach balls are? Those are VERY traditional in our family  They are basically a box stuffing mix with parmesan, butter,  squeezed dry frozen spinach, an egg and some fresh parsley. Formed into 1 inch size balls and heated on a cookie sheet in the oven

because of the way my neighborhood is set up, this happens to me 4-5 times a year.  the door dash people just get sick of looking for correct house, and just end up dropping it at my door.  we've had morning bagels and cream cheese, mcdonalds, local restaurants, and even grocery delivery.

i love them.  we have an aunt that makes them, but i'm not sure if it's necessarily for thanksgiving.

It's true. I got my vape confiscated on my way into the Titans night game a few years back. Drunk me was really upset about it. Like, unreasonably, for the rest of the evening, including at the doordasher that delivered our pizza to the hotel. Fortunately, for everyone, I no longer vape.

 

...and I can't even count how many times I've texted someone that I accidentally ordered them food. One night, I was hanging out with friends on my porch, in Northern VA, and had to call a hotel in Chicago to congratulate their staff on all the free pizza I was having delivered to them 😅

we agreed on that.  the groceries we figured out pretty quick.  we called for the food the first couple of times, but they say keep it and they'll refund the order.  the only thing we've eaten were the bagels, as we have no idea how long some of the other items were left outside.  i once picked up a wet bag of mcds.  i'm not touching that with a 10 foot pole.

we usually smoke our turkey so stuffing either in the oven or spinach balls at our house. I'm getting hungry thinking about it
