1988 November 20

• Back when special teams were able to block kicks.
• On November 20, 1988, the Buffalo Bills clinched the AFC East title and fans celebrated by tearing down goal posts. 
  • The fans took the goal posts home as souvenirs

I have a Scott Norwood autograph from a program from that day.  I have never seen Fred Smerlas in person to ask him for an autograph on it.

Sadly, it was all down hill after this game in 1988.

 

A 10-5 loss at Tampa Bay two weeks later, in a clunker, cost the Bills the one seed in the playoffs and a shot at beating the Niners in the SB.

And a clunker in Indy, the last game of the season, where the Bills blew a 14-3 lead.  The day before, Washington missed a chip shot FG at Cincinnati that would have given the Bills home field.

 

I'll always believe that 1988 team had the goods to win the Super Bowl, if only the AFCCG was played at Rich.
