Oh gosh, this is funny.

This is why I rarely post opinions about draft picks.   To paraphrase Socrates, "I know that I know nothing."

@Logic good for you redacting the names.  Classy.

Yea I remember Socrates Poole saying that on The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.

I'd love to dig up the draft night thread about Terrel Bernard and see how absolutely wrong so many people were.

I'm not immune to it. I nearly cried when they drafted Josh Allen. I'm just saying...the discrepancy of opinion between draft night and now would make for some humorous reading.

There was much negativity around this pick to say the least.  That’s why we don’t get paid to run NFL teams.  The sad part is when the fans actually know than the GM. Thankfully the Bills aren’t one of those teams.

Some replies from draft night are below (names redacted, but there are some great posters amongst the quotes below. These are only from the first 10 pages of the 36 page thread).

Key takeaways: Instant draft night takes are usually bad, most of us have no idea what we're talking about, and sometimes we SHOULD trust the scouts. Oh, and apparently Dylan Parham was a very popular choice for the Bills in 2022.

"Midget."

"Joe marino is not having it at all. HATES the pick lol"

"Bernard I had as a 6th round guy. If this is the future replacement for Edmunds then yikes. Not too happy with this one to be honest."

"Meh. Over draft. Yet he might be a ST/backup to Milano."

"He’s a backup to Milano? Seems like a weird pick here. "

"Ok I'm having a hard time getting pumped for this one"

"I had Bernard earmarked for one of those 6th rounders."

"6-1 LB? 😂 Is Beanie Boy stoned too?"

"Levy/Jauron level draft."

"I was happy with the draft until this Beane dropped this turd pick into the punch bowl. Parham should’ve been the pick and went one spot after us."

"Parham should have been the pick.  This guy could have been had with one of our 6th round picks or maybe even a UDFA.  There's no highlight reel for him on youtube, and no one has him listed as a day 1 starter.  A real reach in the 3rd round.  A true WTF pick."

"just an awful pick.  could have traded down and got him.   Tiny, oft injured, most project him as a pure ST player/backup.  With other OL and WR on board this is off. "

Haha.

Now what I would like to know what do you guys think where he goes in redraft with hindsight?

Late 1st? Earlier? I have no idea.

I should probably defer to the resident draft experts here, but...

It's hard to think the Vikings wouldn't rather have him than Lewis Cine, who they picked at 32. Or that the Commanders wouldn't rather have him than Jahan Dotson, who they picked at 16.

Heck, the Bills themselves picked Kaiir Elam at 23!

Have to think he'd go no later than the top to middle of the 2nd, at worst. And only because off-ball linebackers are still a bit devalued relative to other positions.

It's crazy that some GM and scouts ended up knowing more about a football player's potential than a bunch of nobodies on the internet. It's...like...crazy and stuff.

I mean, he’s well outperformed this regimes former 16th overall pick lol

I hated the Bernard pick. I was completely wrong and have zero problem admitting it

I remember wanting the Bills to draft Devin Lloyd in the first round that year as the Edmunds replacement, but they took Kair Elam with that pick....then they took Bernard in the 3rd.

It's clear that Bernard is a better player than Lloyd at this point....in Beane I trust!!

As I recall, McDermott said they picked Bernard mostly because his coach at Baylor, a friend of McDermott's, said Bernard was the real deal. He was right. So was the writer of his profile on NFL.com, at least in terms of Bernard's strengths, quoted below. I admire his play for a lot of reasons, but especially how he studies film.

Scouts rave about his leadership and character.

Never-quit attitude despite adversity.

Film junkie who rang up 100-plus tackles in 2019 and 2021.

Rapid read and response against play-action.

On a continuous quest to go get the football.

Loose and fluid in pursuit and change of direction.

Bends and flattens off the corner as a blitzer.

Speed to cover man targets underneath.

I don't really understand the desire to dunk on other posters about this.

Work ethic, self-reflection, and willingness to grow are all intangibles. As a fan, you really can't measure those. As a coach/scout who actually sits down and meets these players, it might be one of the most important things to measure.

Bernard developed into the player he is today. He wasn't even close to this coming into the league. Kudos to the scouts, Beane, and the Bills staff to identify Bernard.  I don't think it was unreasonable to be skeptical at the time of the pick though if you're going off just measurables and college success.

This may be difficult to understand but like some CBs are never thrown at Tremaine Edmunds PREVENTED a number of plays due to his size and amount of space he could cover allowing other players to  make plays.

Congratulations to Terrel Bernard with well deserved award without a dig on previous players.

he covered so much space that he ran right past them... he might have been hard to throw over but i think defenses adjust to him pretty good after a whie

and took advantage of his short  <--  haha...commings

I was definitely wrong with my meh line. I admit it his slow forty time concerned me that said I did say I liked him better when saw him during his rookie preseason as he seemed great at diagnosing plays and finding the runner etc. yet was still concerned with his speed.

Willingness to really dig in and study the game seems so undervalued by everybody haha I’d take a guy like that over somebody with all the physical tools that doesn’t do a lot of that any day

it’s really pretty amazing there are guys that have that drive still after basically giving up their entire childhood to football

the interesting part of this is, i thought josh might get afc offensive player of the week

They did not want to give him more ammunition for MVP over NFL's golden boys.

This is the best..."Sneaky how they used Kyle Brandt to try and hype us up for the most underwhelming pick of Beane’s tenure."
