I believe I remember being irritated that they didn't draft an offensive player with the pick, but then watching and reading about Bernard and understanding why they picked him, and reminding myself that 3rd rounders realistically are not usually instant starters.

There are relatively few people in that whole draft night thread who had nice things to say about the pick.

And yeah, I've had plenty plenty plenty of bad draft takes over the years that I'll readily admit to. I was ready for the Bills to draft Troy Franklin at the top of round two this year. I thought Ryan Nassib in round 2 would've been a sound decision the year he came out. I thought Josh Allen was JP Losman 2.0. So...yeah. I'm an idiot. There's a reason I'm not employed by an NFL team.

I was very patient with him because he was only 11 years old when we drafted him, but by year four I was ready to move on.

Admittedly, I was absolutely one of those people who was critical of it in the moment. Really happy to be wrong! TB, when healthy, has been an absolute stud.

He was projected as a 4th-5th round pick and we took him in the 3rd. If I remember right, McD had some connection to Bernard's college coach, who highly recommended him for the Bills- that's what people took issue with.

 

I personally was pumped after drafting Bernard. It wasn't until I saw him look lost in game action as a rookie that I got off the hype train. Turns out, we were all wrong, he's a stud.

I posted some comments from that thread up above, but suffice to say that the draft capital used on him was not the only problem people had with him.

It was frequently mentioned that he was too small to play linebacker, that he's probably nothing more than a LB/S 'tweener, that he was not a "need", and that he'd likely never be anything more than Milano's backup. And, weirdly enough, multiple people were also very upset that he was not Dylan Parham.

Well, I don’t think people were wrong. They were concerned about him because he only managed to start 1 game out of a possible 6 that Milano or Edmunds missed. He wasn’t beating out Klein or Doson when 49 was out. His only start came with Edmunds. He was now going to be taking sole control of MLB responsibilities. 
 

Better yet, would we know what we have if Milano wasn’t oft-injured and Edmunds getting that big money offer that we wouldn’t match from Chicago? Probably not. Blessing in disguise not being able to retain 49. 
 

TB had the pedigree at Baylor to make you believe he has a place in the league, the forced opportunity just wasn’t there until 2023. 
 

Tremaine is a solid LB but 43 makes game changing plays.

Have to give you props. One of the few that is wrong on draft night that comes around and owns it. Kudos.

I had no feelings about him other than he was undersized. Read a lot about how people hated the pick. 

 

Didn't he have a big play in his pre season debut IIRC? Like a fumble for a TD or something? Or was that Spector? 

 

I remember the view being similar on both of them (for different reasons).

These picks that seem so questionable at first, I think, highlight that you cannot replicate being in the room with a guy simply by reading a draft profile.

 

Beane seems to have struck a good balance on prioritizing character, especially when it comes to the head down, trust the process, 1/11, type of mindset.

 

It is something just doesn’t show at the Combine.

I don't watch college and I don't do the pre-draft work that some do, so I really have no idea about any of the drafted players outside of the odd highlight video or reading the analysis of others. I am always amazed by the certainty that some post about draft picks.

I was the same way.

I was patient cause i thought he would figure it out and "turn it on", but it never really happened.

The guy always looked lost, unsure of his assignments and very rarely made the first tackle on someone. I was not sorry to see him go and thought the Bears way overpaid for him, but at least it got him off the roster.

 

I think Beane figured out he had made a mistake on this one.

TB is a special player, and doesn't get enough recognition.  Out of all the players that were out during the playoff game last year, I told my son going in, that he was the one player we needed the most.

 

I forget who, but I believe it was Orlovsky who watched the tape, and said that TB was calling out the plays, and knew exactly what KC was going to do, before they did it.  Mentioned that TB got upset with Taron on the TD, because he knew what was going to happen before it happened. This is what makes me feel different about us going forward with a true QB on defense.  

 

My intent wasn't to bash Edmunds, but since others are still defending him, I have to say, that Edmunds was the def of average.  Elite Physical traits, but below average instincts = average linebacker.

 

Yes.....he took up space, but more is needed out of the QB of your defense, so much more.
