Why is McD not being talked about as coach of the year?

McD should definitely be in consideration, and may even win depending on how the rest of the season unfolds. 
 

However, it’s understandable how he’s not getting the national attention yet. As others have said, he’s got Josh and a perennial playoff team. Tomlin’s Steelers were expected to finally miss the playoffs this year. He’s got to be a favourite. Same with O’Connoll. Weren’t we all excited having the Vikings 2nd round pick, expecting it to be an early 2nd rounder?

 

Coach of the year is usually a measure of how your team performs above expectations. McD has certainly done that, but maybe not to the same degree as Tomlin or O’Connell (because the bar was already high even if this was to be a “rebuild year”).

I honestly think that McD should really be a Coach of the Year candidate, how can he not?! 
- He has the players buying into the culture.

- Suffering with a lot of injuries, the backups are well prepared to step up. 

- He might not call the defense, but its his system and trust me he is the one making the adjustments at half time with Bobby and Brady and completely dominating the 2nd half of the games. 

- A lot of good players and leaders departure this offseason and he has the Bills 9-2 when everybody thought we were rebuilding, at the end of the day, it is his team.

- Maybe not the best game manager, but you how can you not be pleased with his game decisions. He trusted Bass to kick a very difficult game winner and he delivered... the trust Allen to convert a 4th and 2 against the Chiefs and he delivered.

 

And the list goes on and on...

 

Odds for him to get it in BETUS are +2500... Mike Tomblin is the current favorite with +300 followed by Dan Campbell at +400. Is he really that far away? 

My prediction is the winner of the Lions Bills game ends up with the CoY

Let's all focus on this last part.  Say it louder for the people in the back of the room: "Rarely does COTY win the SB"

 

Its not like he benched Fields for a career backup, he benched him for a very good veteran in Wilson who even was considered the starter before his injury.

I think it’d be close then.  I’d say it would also depend how teams like the Lions and Steelers finish up.  If Lions only lose to us, yet finish 15-2, they’ll have done so IN SPITE of Goff being their QB.  In which case I think Campbell gets more credit than McD.  If Steelers win their division, that vastly outpaces expectations AND Tomlin made the controversial move to bring Wilson in as starter over Fields.  In that case, I think Tomlin gets COY over McD too.

 

That said, I personally think this is McD and his coaching staff’s best season yet so far, but he’s up against some considerable foes and has the benefit of Josh as his QB, which works against the narratives.

too many view him as the reason the Bills do not advance in the playoffs----that's not going to get you the MVP.

COTY is a regular season award. It’s voted on before the playoffs start.

Every team deals with injuries, and Buffalo isn’t even one of the most injury-stricken teams this year.

 

I have no problem with McDermott winning the award; he deserves recognition. However, it’s not surprising that the Bills are in contention for the top seed. Many didn’t expect Minnesota or Washington to be wildcards, let alone contend for their divisions. Additionally, New York being a larger market means more betting action for the Jets, which is why betting on the Bills as division winners was one of the best bets of the offseason.

Coach of the Year usually goes to the HC of a team that was expected to be bad...yet found a way to significantly overachieve.  Usually (but not always) it's also a fairly new coach to the NFL (1-2 years in the league) rather than a longtime established veteran.  I have no idea why it's that way.  Maybe because voters have no other idea on what to look for in a good coach.

 

That's why someone like Bill Belichick could be considered the best HC in the NFL for almost two decades straight, but somehow only won the award three times.  Andy Reid won it once, and it was way back during his second year with the Eagles (over 20 years ago).

 

Based on the normal credentials, I would assume that Dan Quinn (Washington) is among the front-runners.  Kevin O'Connell (Vikings) is another legit candidate.  If Pittsburgh wins the AFC North, Mike Tomlin could buck the trend of younger coaches winning it.  Dan Quinn (Detroit) and Sean McDermott are probably longshots, considering their teams aren't really surprises.

McD will never win Coach of the Year. It'll always go to the coach who took over a team with a high draft pick & got them to a wild card, or maybe even winning a weak division, not a guy in his 8th season with the same team.

 

He absolutely should be in consideration, but he won't be.

That would probably do it. But McD is not in a great position to win it. It is an award that usually goes to a HC that overachieves with his roster or situation. The Bills have been the 2nd, 3rd or 4th best AFC team for last four seasons. They’ll probably finish the regular season there again. Notably they have had a top 5 QB every one of those seasons and easily so this season.

 

Voters are going to look at McD and the Bills and say “He probably has the best QB in the league (or very close) and his team earned the 2nd (or 3rd) seed in the AFC. As a HC he is doing a good job, but there is nothing that comes close to making me think it is the best HC performance in the league.”

He is the most underrated coach in the NFL.  His defenses are always very good.  He has been running split safeties for years but Fangio gets credit for the spread around the league.  Broke the drought with a roster projected to be the worst in the NFL.  This season many were saying the window is shutting and he was going to be fired at year’s end.  Maybe he doesn’t pay his agent to generate PR.  Idk it is odd.  The fan base for the most part agrees with the media.  Has the team ready play.  Is more aggressive than most think.   He gets killed for the 13 secs but I don't think there was an alignment that stops Mahomes with 2 time outs.

Is this a real question??? Tomlin is 8-2 with Fields and Wilson, who everyone thought was washed. This is after making the playoffs with Kenny Pickett and Rudolph last year. After not having a losing season ever. People who doubt Tomlin at this point baffle me. 
 

and Sean has, and most always, done a great job since he’s been here. But COY tends to be an expectation award and the bills expectation is to be a playoff team. So while we might be better than most expected, it’s not dramatic enough, especially when you have an amazing QB. 
 

but this is why when some fans wanted him gone in the offseason, he would have a job in a second. He is a great leader and while I think culture is very overrated (your culture is great if you have an awesome qb and it sucks when you have a bad one), this is a very tight team.

Weren't the same pundits, who will be voting the COTY, argued at the beginning of the season that the Bills will be bad (even miss the playoffs as the 3rd best team in the AFC East).  They should not take into account the job McDermott has done to take this 'bad' team and significantly overachieve to be the AFC East division champs once again in regular season.
