hondo in seattle Posted Wednesday at 03:02 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:02 PM (edited) I don't know if he deserves to win, but he should be in the conversation. He transformed a perennial loser into a team that has, if I recall correctly, won the 2nd most games in the NFL since 2020. And yet has never been COY. It seems to be an oversight. And this year, pundits were saying the Bills would finish 2nd, or even 3rd, in the AFCE because it was a rebuilding year for us with many of our previous stars (Diggs, Hyde, Poyer, White, et al) all gone and $68 million in dead cap. And yet the squad keeps soldiering on, knocking down opponents with high levels of confidence, discipline, teamwork, and morale. Edited Wednesday at 05:10 PM by hondo in seattle 3 1 Quote
NewEra Posted Wednesday at 03:04 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:04 PM My vote goes to Dan Quinn. followed by O’Connell (even though his DC is carrying him), Tomlin, Harbaugh then Payton. Quote

I honestly think that McD should really be a Coach of the Year candidate, how can he not?! I believe the thinking is that McD has one of the best QB in the league who creates on his own. Also, as another poster said, the Bills are expected to be perennially good now. The people who vote for that stuff don't read the fine print and say "how is he managing to have such a solid D when they've moved on from last year's starting safeties, they lost their all-pro LB before the season and their MLB for an extended period, how is the O managing when they started out thin at WR and injuries made them thinner" etc etc The perception is that McD is a solid coach but he's working with a full cupboard of player talent Edited Wednesday at 03:09 PM by Beck Water 1 Quote
boyst Posted Wednesday at 03:09 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:09 PM as long as he has Josh Allen singlehandedly winning games for him he will not be considered. Josh Allen on any team will win ball games. Quote

I honestly think that McD should really be a Coach of the Year candidate, how can he not?! - He has the players buying into the culture. - Suffering with a lot of injuries, the backups are well prepared to step up. - He might not call the defense, but its his system and trust me he is the one making the adjustments at half time with Bobby and Brady and completely dominating the 2nd half of the games. - A lot of good players and leaders departure this offseason and he has the Bills 9-2 when everybody thought we were rebuilding, at the end of the day, it is his team. - Maybe not the best game manager, but you how can you not be pleased with his game decisions. He trusted Bass to kick a very difficult game winner and he delivered... the trust Allen to convert a 4th and 2 against the Chiefs and he delivered. And the list goes on and on... Odds for him to get it in BETUS are +2500... Mike Tomblin is the current favorite with +300 followed by Dan Campbell at +400. Is he really that far away? I agree and more often then not I'm one of those who thinks McD has held the Bills back in the playoffs. But given the player departures this season and the fact that the majority of the football media expected the Bills to significantly slide there is no reason McD shouldn't be a top 3 candidate for coach of the year. 1 Quote
Logic Posted Wednesday at 03:31 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:31 PM First: Sean McDermott should have won coach of the year in the Damar Hamlin/blizzard year. Keeping the team together through all of that and achieving a 13-3 record was an incredible achievement, regardless of how the playoffs turned out. As to the topic at hand: "Coach of the year", much like League MVP, has taken on a different meaning. These days, it more often than not tends to go to coaches who coached a previously bad team to a winning record. Guys who come in and resuscitate bad teams and make them good. Dan Quinn would fit the bill this year, as would Jim Harbaugh. I don't think that SHOULD be what the award equates to, but it is what it is. For the Bills to have the best point differential in the league since 2020 and to be as consistently good as they are, its downright criminal that McDermott has never won it. Alas, he is punished for his consistency. 2 1 Quote

They decide coach of the year before the Superbowl, don't they? I thought it was decided before the playoffs like all of the other awards. Quote

MJS Posted Wednesday at 03:35 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:35 PM He should have won it in 2017, taking that bad roster to the playoffs and breaking the longest active playoff drought streak in pro sports at the time. He should have won it again in 2020. He should win it again this year, because everyone nationally was down on the Bills and believed they would be taking a step back and not even winning the division. But he won't. Again. Because that award never goes to the best teams. It just goes to the teams who everyone thought would suck, who do better than expectations. 1 1 Quote
ToGoGo Posted Wednesday at 03:37 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:37 PM There is no logical reason that holds up as to why he hasn’t won since 2017. Every “reason” falls apart. It’s the same reason Allen had “no chance” for MVP last year but somehow Lamar does this year. The reasons are emotional. The explanations are reactive and not proactive, which they try to pretend that they are. 1 Quote
Beck Water Posted Wednesday at 03:39 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:39 PM 27 minutes ago, Antonio said: I just don´t see it. Why am I missing? He has a very good football team doing what is expected. I get Dan Campbell and Dan Quinn, but Tomblin??? Really?! Tomlin took the Big Balls step of benching his starting QB when the team was 4-2 and had just won. Many prognosticators prognosticated that was a move that would end in disaster. The QB is the most important player on the football team, and Tomlin has 8 wins now with a team QB'd by a first-round pick who washed out in Chicago, and a former all-pro who couldn't get-r-done for 2 years in Denver - on a Denver team that is doing at least as well with a rookie now At receiver, they have George Pickens and who? Second round never-was Van Jefferson? 33 year old Cordarelle Patterson? 30 year old "Can now cover Mike" Williams? Right or wrong, the perception is that Tomlin is leading that team to over-achieve 55 minutes ago, Orlando Buffalo said: McD has Josh, coach of the year generally needs to overcome something. ganesh Posted Wednesday at 03:46 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:46 PM The Lions are pummeling everyone in the NFC. Their HC should be in consideration for Coach of the Year The Bills are a surprising 9-2 with a significant win against the then unbeaten Chiefs. Sean McDermott should be in consideration for Coach of the Year The Commanders while they have lost the last two games have put on a great show turning that franchise around and a Franchise QB to boot. Dan Quinn should be in consideration for Coach of the Year Sean Peyton has his Broncos humming as the 7th team in the playoffs with a rookie QB who has been impressive. He will get his chance when he actually can beat the Chiefs and the Chargers in their division. The Vikings allowed Cousins to depart via FA...Drafted a QB in the 1st round and lost him for the season in the pre-season. They picked Sam Darnold from the scrap heap and some how started 5-0 and a leading WC contender in a tough NFC North. He deserves every chance for consideration for Coach of the Year Mike Tomlin being the top choice is quite surprising. Tomlin did have his team in the playoffs last year with some scrub QBs...He got Fields and Wilson during the off season and they are at the top of their division. With the return of T.J from injury they were expected to make the playoffs. I am not sure why he is the top contender. Quote

RunTheBall Posted Wednesday at 03:53 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:53 PM This is why all these awards are an absolute joke and really mean nothing. McD should have won it twice so far. He should have won when we broke the drought, and he should have won in 2020 when he kept that team together through all the obstacles of that season. Hamlin should have won Comeback Player of the year over Flacco, that was a big FU to Buffalo no question. Josh should have won MVP over Lamar last year. These awards are nothing but narrative driven popularity contests 1 Quote
Don Otreply Posted Wednesday at 03:54 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:54 PM Why you say, Because, the entire football world flip flops endlessly between, “he needs to be fired”, and “boy he really is good at what he does”, Hell I’m a big fan of McDermott and he has pissed me off repeatedly, LOL 😂 Thats why, GO BILLS!!! 1 Quote

Im not challenging you, but I sincerely am wondering what others think the reason is. I read a lot of "he should be" or "he's better than Lamar" and so on but if Mc D is the same reason as Josh then we can't say it has to do with interceptions and such. Would it be popularity? Are our guys not likable enough to other teams and the media? idk. Quote
