Let's hope this is the real deal because as Coleman and Kincaid get healthy, Bills are going to be a real headache for opposing DCs I noticed that and actually said it out loud to the folks I was watching with, he wasnt just straight forward speed, he had balance and cutting ability. It would be a huge bonus if he becomes that player consistently. Almost like you added another legit NFL wideout. 1 Quote
blacklabel Posted November 20 Posted November 20 I maintain that the injuries he's been dealing with since camp have been slowing him down. Earlier in the season, even when he was good to go, you could see he just wasn't schemed into the game plan too much. And if he was, they'd try to get him the ball earlier and if those couple attempts got shut down they really didn't dial up anything for him the rest of the game. But these last few weeks you can see he's been much more involved into their plans. Obviously some of that is based on injuries to Keon and Kincaid but in these last few weeks when I've watch Samuel out there he definitely looks quicker and more confident. So yeah, I hope whatever injuries he was dealing with are under control right now and he continues to be more involved in the offense. Cooper, Coleman, Shakir, Samuel, Hollins, Kincaid, Knox, Cook, Davis, and Johnson, that's a pretty good and diverse group of skill players. 1 2 Quote

I am saying its pretty evident Allen isn't looking at him much as there have been a number of times Samuel was open and Allen went somewhere less optimal. They also did use Samuel more aggressively yesterday too. So will we continue to see Samuel used in similar fashion moving forward is part of the equation, and a bigger part of the equation IMHO. Or was his usage more a just a function of who was not on the field this week. A couple of things. First, on the late-game missed deep throw into triple coverage to Knox, Samuel was wide open on a crosser. Second, while had 5 catches for 58 yards on the stat sheet, he really had 6 for 75 when you factor in the PI he caused on that leaping attempt to catch the ball in the fourth. Good game for him. He also had two great RACs on throws that didn't put him in the best position for RAC too. 3 Quote

Out of sympathy for the rapidly deteriorating situation in New York, Commissioner Goodell has declared the 'jet sweep' play to be illegal for the rest of the season. 😑 2 Quote

This would suggest that his injury was in fact limiting him. I suspect that coming out of the bye we'll see more Samuel jet sweeps and runs. 1 Quote
Don Otreply Posted November 20 Posted November 20 I get that folk wanted Samuel to be his un-injured self, what I don’t get is that seemingly football wise fans have so little understanding of injuries and the full amount of time that it takes to fully recover from them, just look at Tre White’s knee, it took an entire season after it healed to get back to normal, why is it that so many can’t/won’t wrap their minds around this basic understanding? 1 Quote

He also had 107 receptions for 1249 yards... 11.7 ypr. In his 283 touches he scored 24 TDs. He ran a 4.31 at the 2017 combine before being selected 40th overall by the Carolina Panthers. I appreciate your excellent response. Though I would mention that NFL history is replete with speedy RBs who could not translate their college success to the NFL. Often because they lack the vision or shiftiness that I suggested Samuel may lack. I liked the Samuel signing, and I'm excited to see what he can be in this evolving offense. But so far, screens to him aren't working, where screens to Shakir consistently find success. Perhaps it's lingering effects of the toe injury. I suspect we'll find out as I don't think Brady will stop running Samuel screens. I'm definitely hoping you're correct. Thank you for the discussion. No sarcasm intended. 1 Quote
Eastport bills Posted November 21 Posted November 21 The Samuel in Washington and in Sunday’s game is an elusive, versatile receiver who has great hands and can be a 3rd down converter. He is a great complement to Shakir and Cooper. I am getting excited about our receivers especially if Kincaid and Knox can stay healthy. 2 Quote

It had to have been injury that was holding him back. Quote
Sierra Foothills Posted November 21 Posted November 21 There's 2 screen passes in these highlights from last year... one at 1:45 and the other at 2:10. In 13 starts Samuel caught 62 passes on 91 targets for 613 yards and 4 TDs. Sam Howell started every game at QB for Washington last year. Quote

Yeah, he had the turf toe which is limiting as a receiver. Josh couldn’t develop the trust necessary to get him on the field or targets. This could be the beginning of some consistent production especially if Coleman is not 100% Quote

I placed some bets last year on Samuel and he always cashed in because he was really getting into a rhythm last year - was excited we got him 1 Quote
Mr. WEO Posted November 21 Posted November 21 based on the Bills history with guys like this, he won't be on the roster next year. Quote

We all watched through the first 9 weeks as he was a total afterthought. Last week, and then even more so last night, Curtis Samuel made plays. Both his usage and his productivity vastly improved. He ran legitimate wide receiver routes and made legitimate plays in the passing game. So what's the deal? Did his turf toe injury just finally heal up? Did the OC just finally start using him more intelligently? Were the Bills just FORCED to use him because of injuries to other receivers? A combination of these things? Whatever the case may be, if this new and more productive and versatile Curtis Samuel is here to stay, it will mean great things going forward. Cooper, Coleman, Shakir, Samuel, Hollins could actually wind up being a very strong, versatile, and deep WR corps over the stretch run of the season into the playoffs. Here's hoping Samuel has "arrived" on this offense and this isn't just a short term mirage. If I’m reading this correctly, are you suggesting that our WR corps quietly got better? 1 Quote

Of course it was injury, look how conservative McDermott is with players that are recovering from injury, he doesn’t push anyone back into playing a high percentage of snaps until they are good to go, it fruitless to do otherwise, Quote
