Maybe they were not new tables but used tables which may already have had wear.

Those tables cannot be part of a scandal because they are so limp.

And there's a rubber mat underneath to cushion the fall.

This^^^^^. They removed the diagonal struts that give the table any sturdiness.  I also didn't see any metal hinges holding the table halves together.  It's how they could break the tables with a much lower chance of injury.
