Jon Gruden now employed by Barstool Sports

Surprised there hasn't been a thread about this on here.  From everything I have heard about Gruden he should fit right in there.  And I don't mean that as a compliment.  I can't remember who but I know there's a poster on here who has interacted with Gruden a few times and can't stand him lol.  Should be weird but interesting

I live in Tampa, and it's not uncommon to see him out. I always heard stories about him, and how he was kind of a nasty person. I went to a local sports bar chain, and he was there with his wife and adult son, just hanging. Nobody was really talking to him, and he looked over at me a couple times, almost like saying it's ok to approach, so I did, and we started talking football. I asked him what he thought about Allen, and he said, you guys got a real good one there, but he ain't 12. Keep in mind, that was about 3 years ago, but it still surprises me. But then I started thinking about all the playoff success Kelly had, and the Superbowl appearances, and it kind of made sense. Until Allen takes us to the Superbowl, his greatness is going to be severely limited, at least the perception of it, outside of Buffalo.

 

Forgot to add, he was nice as can be, and was more than willing to talk football for a bit. I think he knew his image had taken a big hit, and he was making an effort to clean it up. Love him or hate him, he's a good football mind

I've always liked Gruden, however, i've always felt that most of his demeanor was some kind of an "act"........just never really felt genuine to me.

The nasty rumors about him are funny. I met a couple years ago from that area that was friends with them. In doing business with the wife she was very flirty and made it seem like she had a thing with gruden and that he was very much a swinger guy. This was reaffirmed later when I met someone who had worked with him and said he was a very sleazy typical college jock that never grew up.

That had more to do with what Kelly did, in my opinion,  but I didn't agree with him. And again, that was 3 years ago. It's possible he no longer feels that way. Plus, at the time, we're talking about Allen who was in year 2 of his takeoff, vs. a HOF 4X conference Champ Kelly. Not fair to even compare the 2 at that point

Everyone involved with the 90s Green Bay Packers suck.  The exception I think is Holmgren.  He seems decent.  The rest suck the big one and we had to watch the nfl for over a decade while these morons kept getting jobs as coaches and the players kept getting arrested etc.

 

also isn't everyone in florida a swinger?  The whole place is as gross as the 90s packers.

Used to like Gruden. Now? Not so much. No real reason other than he annoys me.

 

Watched his Barstool “coming out party” yesterday on multiple Tik Tok’s. Just a bunch of guys sitting around drinking Coors light and listening to Gruden talk about his past. Looked extremely uncomfortable. NFL not a fan of Barstool Sports. Don’t think this moves the needle positively helping Gruden get back in the NFL.

I totally agree with you. I was friends with the beat writer for the Bucs, and there were countless stories about players and coaches getting back stabbed. Players around the league talk. I think it's why he waited so long to return.

Gruden has always been a bit of a turd, so bar stool sports is a logical spot for him, and his vain attempt to be relevant,

I like it.  I enjoy his weekly breakdowns on his YT channel.  I met him a couple times and he’s a real peach from my personal experience

I lived in the general Tampa market (Sarasota) during the Dungy/Gruden era. Sports talk radio had a former Buc  hosting who was still close to many of the players dealing with Gruden. Many, many tales of him being a person you don’t dare trust. He will lie to your face and think nothing of it. I’m sure he can be on his best behavior sometimes, but that does not define who he truly is. 

 

Our sons’ participated in the same 7 on 7 tournaments at USF. That smug little &^%$# walked around like he owned the joint. He is a person who is very easy to dislike.

Never has there been a more perfect match than Barstool Sports and Jon Gruden.

Gruden is a good illustration of how nobody is all good or all bad. Most people and most things are shades of grey. On the one hand, there's the sexually inappropriate workplace/e-mail stuff, the claims that he's disingenuous, can be "nasty", is an arrogant egomaniac, etc.

On the other hand, I always enjoyed his work as a color commentator, and I enjoy his breakdowns online since he came back into the public eye. I think he's a knowledgeable, entertaining, unique personality with an obvious passion for pro football, and I think his presence adds to the league rather than subtracts from it. Personally, I'd love to sit down and talk football with him over a few beers.

Glad to see him back. I think Gruden, Orlovsky, Belichick, and Baldinger (who all formerly played or coached in the league, you'll notice) add invaluable insight into the game, and I'm thankful for their content contributions. Give me detailed play and scheme breakdowns over talking heads shouting over each other any day.

When he was still coaching, he absolutely played up that Chucky persona. You could see it every game when the cameras would show him on the sideline.

I used to like Gruden as an analyst, and his 1 on 1 sessions with college QBs entering the draft were great TV.  At some point, however, he became a caricature of himself, as it appeared that he was trying too hard to exaggerate his natural personality.  That happens to a lot of people when they become big stars.  Aaron Rodgers is a perfect example of this.  While I don't agree with everything he says and does, he does strike me as a pretty intellectual guy for a NFL player.  That said, I believe that he KNOWS he's intellectual and that others know it too, so he goes out of his way to accentuate it and it comes off as phony.  I used to like the young Rodgers as a player and a person, but now I can't stand the guy (in either capacity). 

 

This type of "getting too full of oneself" is the downfall of many NFL head coaches.  Robert Saleh is a great example.  When he was the 49ers DC, he was a cool, tough, emotional, edgy guy.  As the Jests head coach, he knew he had this reputation and he tried WAY TOO HARD to be that cool tough guy.  If you watched any of his speeches to the team during Hard Knocks, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.  He'd drop f-bombs left and right, trying to look cool and tough.  What he really looked like, however, was a douche.  The players see right through guys like this and they lose the room.  While not exactly the same, as every guy is a little bit different, some of this was the case with Kliff Kingsbury in AZ and I thought Nick Sirianni was losing the room with the Eagles last season (Sirianni may have recovered it a bit this season, however).  Love him or hate him, McDermott is not like that.  He's consistent with his demeanor and he is who he is.  He's not putting on an act.  While you may question his in-game decisions, he's a guy that players respect and play hard for.  Jim Harbaugh, love him or hate him, has been successful everywhere he's been.  He's a strange, quirky guy, who says and does a lot of odd things, but he's really being himself and not putting on an act.  Players see this and respect it.

 

Another guy who projects a positive, real personality is Josh Allen.  He's become a big star, but remains humble and knows how to be himself.
