Do you believe the inspector General is reigning in government spending? Your post reads more sour grapes than anything.

If the inspectors general have been doing their job adequately then DOGE will be much ado about nothing. I am interested in seeing how well the inspectors general have performed.

On average, for every $1 spent on IGs, we get $14-17 in savings and efficiencies.

Seems like creating an entirely new department instead of just better leveraging what already exists is the kind of bureaucratic waste we should be doing away with.

Then it’s all much ado about nothing. There will be no waste, bloat, fraud, or inefficiencies found. The IGs have it covered.

Pretty big “if” there. I am extremely skeptical that this is what they actually want to achieve.

Besides, we have an existing role for that kind of activity in the inspectors general.

To be quite honest, I am not sure of the exact role of the inspector general, but if they are supposed to be doing what Trump tasked musk and vivek to do, it is not being done well.  I could see how this agency gets corrupted just like everything else, but the idea of the government having open books for accountability is great and one that I appreciate no matter which president proposes it. Similar to draft a first round QB, this is the equivalent of drafting a QB because the old one is not working. DOGE is like Josh Allen, the inspector general form the previous administration is like Nathan Peterman.

The King is skeptical. Because we have the inspectors general!

I used to engage with the King, and back then he argued that IG Horowitz's report on Crossfire Hurricane  which outlined 17 egregious FBI "errors" all of which went against Trump, were simply errors that the FBI pledged to fix going forward.

That's it. That's the accountability for illegally spying on a presidential campaign that the King was A ok with.

"We promise that we won't do that again."

Rather than lump everything into a MUSK thread perhaps it’s good to have one specifically for the lefties to whine about DOGE activities.

I ❤️ DOGE. It will probably cost me my job along the way but that’s beside the point.

Come on this is a oxy moron right ? Department of Gov't Efficiency ??  🤔

The US gov't does nothing efficient, it's always long and drawn out usually costing 10 times more than the norm so how in the world are they going to be efficient ?

Wait is Trump firing every body and starting from 0 that might be the only way this will work clean slate !!!

The entire purpose of the Office of Inspector General is to combat fraud, waste, and abuse. in FY 2023, they identified $82.2 billion in savings. If the plan was to better fund and expand the OIG so it could combat even more waste, I'd be all for it. The ROI for investing in the OIG is excellent and would be a big win for taxpayers.

Instead, the plan is to set up an entirely new and separate department to do something that an existing department already does. It's less drafting Josh Allen and more running 2 QB formations. Doesn't make a ton of sense.

And when you consider that the department to eliminate waste is being co-headed by one of the government's largest contractors, it's hard to take it seriously. Are they going to examine SpaceX's contracts? It's like asking the fox to guard the henhouse.

Counterfactual for you: If the Biden administration had said that it was going to create a new department to combat fraud and hired the head of Raytheon to run it and then named the department after a memestock that the head of Raytheon had large personal holdings of, would that be a good idea?

This makes a lot of sense.  However, my guess is there are a lot of internal policies on what can be cut that may lead to a lot more red tape to de-regulate. Setting up a whole new department could give them a lot more control and freedom to slash and cut without having to be held to current internal rules in place.

Trump names Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy
to head Department of Government Efficiency
- 'Manhattan Project of our time'

by Nikki Schwab

President-elect Donald Trump has officially named Elon Musk to head the newly created 'Department of Government Efficiency.' Trump put out a statement Tuesday night saying that Musk will co-lead the 'Manhattan Project of our time' with former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. 'This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people!' Musk said in a statement. Republicans have long complained about government over-spending and Trump touted that DOGE will accomplish its goals by July 4, 2026.

The vast majority of federal spending is on mandatory stuff, SS, medicare, etc. "Discretionary" spending is on veterans, health, education, etc. You won't get spending cuts that will do very much out of the discretionary spending.

They are just blowing smoke

Here's the spending: https://www.nationalpriorities.org/budget-basics/federal-budget-101/spending/

Doesn't pass the King hand waving standard.

Here’s a key point about our mission at DOGE: eliminating bureaucratic regulations isn’t a mere policy preference. It’s a legal *mandate* from the U.S. Supreme Court:
- West Virginia v. EPA (2022) held that agencies cannot decide major questions of economic or political significance without "clear congressional authorization." This applies to *thousands* of rules that never passed Congress.
- In Loper Bright v. Raimondo (2024), the Court ended Chevron deference, which means agencies can't foist their own interpretations of the law onto the American people. Over 18,000 federal cases cited the Chevron doctrine, often to uphold regulations, many of which are now null & void.
- In SEC v. Jarkesy (2024), SCOTUS restricted the use of "administrative law judges" by agencies. The same agency that wrote the rules shouldn't be able to prosecute citizens in “courts” that it controls.
- In Corner Post v. Board of Governors (2024), the Court held that new businesses can challenge old regulations, greatly expanding the statute of limitations & opening many more rules up for scrutiny. So we shouldn't just look at rules passed in the last 4 years, but over the past 4 decades (or more).

DOGE is ready help the U.S. government conform to the U.S. Constitution once again. @elonmusk and I are ready to serve. 🇺🇸

New First Lady Elon suits Trump well. She doesn’t get all pissy and refuse to take his hand. And she’s shorter than Donald, eliminating those uncomfortable “I’m not the tallest person in the room” moments that otherwise would call for a larger lift in his shoes. For similar reasons Vivek is a Better Barron. I like these Trump 2.0 fixes. More efficient than playing pretend happy family. Maybe Vivek can do up the White House for the Hindu Feast of a Better God. Or Elon can do it up for the Nietzschean Feast of the God is Dead, Long Live the Superman on Earth.
