Eberflus is and was a terrible choice for HC, especially to develop a young QB

 

Chicago's defense isn't even all that great. I've questioned McDermott being a defensive HC but at least his defenses are consistently pretty good and there seems to be a program/system where new guys come in and there isn't a huge drop off. That's coaching. 

 

Chicago's D has been total meh. So what's the point of having Eberflus as your HC? If they finally find a great OC he'll just be gone for a HC job and they'll be starting over.

caleb will be fine once they pull off the bandage and fire that coach.  OC today, HC and probably GM, by the end of the year.

First, he's not ruined. These things take time.

 

But the Bears might be delaying his development. Ideally you don't want scheme switches for a rookie. You want to keep him on one path so what he has learned is of further use to him.

 

They should have sat him for a year. But that takes organizational will-power and a ton of it.

I mean they have given him plenty of surrounding talent. DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, a highly touted rookie WR, Kmet is a decent starting TE. They have a very good defense which takes the pressure off the offense. The OL needs some work for sure but no #1 overall QB is stepping into a perfect situation in their rookie year.

 

Everyone always wants to praise or blame the coaching staff. Personally I think great QBs will become great no matter where they're drafted, and the same in reverse for bad QBs. Darnold was supposedly "ruined" by the Jets but now he is turning back into the player that he always has been even in an elite offensive system with elite talent. Allen didn't become great because Daboll screamed at him on the sidelines, he himself put in the work and methodically eliminated all of his major flaws. That's what Caleb Williams has to do.

 

The concern is that Williams is looking as bad or worse now than he did to start the season. You would have hoped to see some progress at this point, but it's still very early. The Bears did the "make the fans happy" move and fired the OC. Maybe that will help some, but it isn't going to transform Williams into a player worthy of the #1 selection. He has to do that on his own.

Where the Bears screwed up was drafting Odunze at #9 instead of OL to protect their #1 overall pick.

 

Or better yet, they could've traded down & drafted multiple O-Linemen. They already had 2 starting caliber WRs, and didn't have a 2nd round pick. Everybody wanted Odunze, they could've moved down a few spots & gotten a 2nd rounder. It's not good practice to go after shiny toys when you have the worst OL in the league.

Disagree man. I’ve watched a few Bears games and they aren’t terrible. 
 

Average pass blocking but Caleb is holding on to the football way too long and is throwing some of the lowest catchable ball %. 
 

The Bears are around the top of the league in run blocking stats and middle of the pack for pass. The average time for giving up a sack is 3.66 seconds on the season…

Very rarely do QBs make waves in their rookie year. It usually takes 2-3 years before you know for sure.

The Bears have a terrible culture and no leadership from within the team. Guys like DJ Moore, a veteran who puts up great fantasy stats but is always on losing teams. He’s not a leader. It’s not always on the coach, but the coach and GM have to be able to bring the right guys in to fit the culture they are trying to instill.

 

No excuse for a team with the Bears’ apparent talent to lose 19-3 at home to a dismal Pats roster. 
 

That looks like a team with no true leaders just going through the motions.

OL not helping Williams off the turf after a sack etc....

Looks like some players have had enough of the Caleb show.

It’s a mess right now. Plus, the Bears have the toughest remaining schedule. Year one will be humbling for QB1.
 

Next year a new coaching staff will get the chance to turn things around. Obviously this Eberflus administration is piss poor.

Maye's o line is terrible and he has no weapons at all but is looking like he's developing. Maye doesn't have near the weapons Caleb does.  Caleb is holding on to the ball and taking bad sacks. Is it coaching?  The weird thing is some players calling for a qb change. I dont remember players asking for a qb change when Josh was struggling.

Third actually. Fox drafted Trubisky, fired a year later. Nagy drafted Fields, fired a year later. Now Eberflus and Williams. 

 

Totally dysfunctional organisation.

As I noted last fall, this is exactly what Caleb did constantly his last season at USC.  It continues to be a huge problem and speaks to the possibility that--despite his athletic talents--Williams has difficulty processing what he's seeing on the field.  This has sometimes been referred to as "seeing ghosts" and it is not always a correctable problem.  FWIW, In one of the TSW mock drafts in April, I got destroyed for taking Jayden Daniels for the Bears over Williams with the first overall pick. 

 

It's too early to write Williams off completely, but there are a ton of red flags here and we could be looking at another Bryce Young-type situation, especially given the talent Williams was given to work with...
