LOL. Same idea. Rapp came out of concussion protocol. Wears the padded helmet. Last thing he would do is lower his head. Was so obvious on the field. Refs were turrible.

This might be the conspiratorial part of my brain being irrational, but I think the league wanted to keep Miami relevant and we got hosed by the refs this game.

Officiating is a win-win for the NFL.

 

If there aren't a ton of flags, the on-field product is probably good.

 

But perceived unfair officiating really bonds fans to their team.  It's literally how pro wrestling gets fans to bond to their faces and hate their heels.  The drama of perceived injustice adds to the entertainment value and generates conversation.   Often the MOST conversation about that game.  There actually needs to be a good amount of controversy to maximize the entertainment value of the product.  And by keeping the game extremely difficult to officiate.......the NFL can create that organically.

Check back with me in a decade when the very first RB in NFL history gets flagged for leading with his helmet.  It's not right but the speed of the game is too fast and refs are too flawed.

Smith wasn't penalized on that play.

 

So of the 3 plays that the NFL deemed worth of fines, the Dolphins only had 1 penalty. Highly ironic that Rapp was penalized on a play that the league went back and fined the Dolphins player for. 

 

Rapp did get fined for taunting on a different play where he tackled Mostert (no penalties given). Could see him jawing after the play, but didn't make any gestures. Rapp wasn't penalized on the play. Not sure how talking some smack after a tackle is worth a fine, bit whatever

Not only did Rapp get fined for taunting, but his fine ($11,255) was bigger than Poyer's fine ($11,193) for the hit on Coleman. That's just nuts.

Sounds just like many posters here.  If the Bills had lost the game, there would be 10X the threads and posts about the calls.  And I'm sure the Miami fans would all call the Bills fans the worst too.

Just like many posters here - when Bills win they say Bills should have LOST but won due to calls by Zebras or balls thrown by Allen which should have been intercepted.  They sound a lot a like.

Some of the officials are really out of touch. Rapp had suffered his 2nd known concussion only one month earlier trying to tackle Derrick Henry, and was wearing a Guardian Cap to address those concerns. Had they been aware of this they might have asked themselves, why would this guy attempt to hurt a big, physical running back with his helmet?

As I mentioned in the "NFL Officiating is Broken" topic, under the current rules, penalties are not challengable. Making them so would be a huge improvement for the game, IMO.

This would require the refs to put their ego aside and overturn their own call. Pass interference was challengeable for like a season and it was done away with because the refs would never overturn their own call that was a judgement call.

Maybe if there was an independent sky ref, or ref in a 3rd party location (call into "New York" for the review) not affiliated with the refs that made the original call it would work.

I do understand. Bills fans will say the same thing. What was absurd to me was in the context of that particular game-- one in which Rapp took an impactful flag that should have been thrown to the opposing player he tackled, among several other erroneous calls that went Miami's way.

 

I also shake my head at the notion that the NFL would be gunning against a big-market team like the Dolphins, over a small-market team like the Bills, which venues like NFL Redzone practically ignore. And believe me-- There is a very vocal segment of the Dolphin fanbase that has convinced themselves of this. It goes well beyond what we would see on the Bills forum, where it would be a more rational take (although I still wouldn't agree with it).
