What to do for Edge Rusher?

Under contract next year are the following:

Groot

Epinessa

Solomon

Von

Expiring contacts for Smoot and Toohill.

I would agree Von is likely done. Leaving you with 3 guys locked in. Smoot or Toohill replacement level guys are cheap and they could re-up on one of those guys or something similar.

I also imagine at least a day 1 or day 2 pick invested into the edge. I do not foresee a major upgrade in FA or trade coming our way in the foreseeable future.

Yannick Ngakoue? He's out there and should be inexpensive. Might be able to rotate in and add something.

He was picked by the Patriots on the waiver wire

Seems like the plan was always to get out of Von’s deal after year 3 unless he completely balled out.

I can see Solomon get more reps next season but ultimately think they find a new starter either in FA or the draft

We got to make our draft picks work.  That is the best way to win a SB.  Getting FA at every position is not feasible.  We will get MVS, Edwards etc.

I'd say draft but I don't think it is a super talented edge group this year. Is Carter from Penn State the top guy? I've seen him listed as such but to my eye he is a classic Penn State toolsy raw edge guy... put him in the Jayson Oweh and Chop Robinson bucket. I'd be fine with the Bills taking a shot but if he is the best guy out there he will go sooner. Just because of need.

I haven't seen as much CFB this year as I'd like with life getting in the way so happy for folks to throw other names at me I might want to try and catch in a game before the season ends and I start my draft work in Jan.

I think Tankathon is a great source for general info how prospects are perceived.

Right now they have Carter as top guy at 9 overall so way out of our reach.

They have 3 other guys in top 15 and about 6 guys around 32 where we pick. It seems pretty likely that value might meet need this time.

Hmm. Jack Sawyer as a top 30 player? I mean I haven't got stuck into this class but if Sawyer is a top 30 guy it's not a good class.

I think Pearce is a bit of a projection, similar to Carter. Need to see more of the other guys.

Maybe, but 1T is the bigger hole currently. At least we have some youth and capable bodies at edge in Soloman and Epenesa, and Rousseau is near elite as a LE. Daquan looks washed and it's compromising everything down the line. Oliver has to take on double teams. You can't rush when you're being rushed on, etc.

I'm not opposed to going Edge early in the draft if someone we like falls to us, but we shouldn't be mortgaging our future on it imo.

Edit: one thing I will say in AJ's defense is he's a decent run defender. Given our issues stopping the run this year, he's actually one of the few guys who's helping.

Move him to CB
