I don't know if the Bills even reach the Super Bowl if they had this generations version of the Chiefs and Bengals in their conference.  All the best teams besides the Bills were in the NFC in the early 90's.

Allen is certainly a more dynamic player.  Kelly called his own plays.

Allen is pretty much calling entire drives at this point with the amount of audibles he does.

I’m not sure you can say that.

To be fair though… the 13 second game was the Divisional round.  Even had we won, there is no guarantee the Bills win the championship the following week.    We all assume, and fully saw that team as unstoppable… but that game was not for the championship which so many people seem to gloss over.

I stand corrected. I was thinking that was the AFC championship game. Ancient history.
But, regardless of any one game or how it factors into a legacy, how many of you would accept Burrow straight up in a trade for Josh?
That’d be a big ‘hell no’ from me.

I loved Jim.

But this is not even comparable in my opinion.

Josh is a couple levels above.

Give Josh the SB bills teams with all those weapons maybe less partying before a SB game would be the difference

Huh?!

Maybe you watched a different game but the Chiefs, Raiders and Oilers were always around 10 wins that SB run… You had Miami, San Diego and Denver with a couple good years too; just not consistent to reach the top.

The NFC was the absolute best, yes but that Central division was bogus more often than not.

Agreed….  Burrow is maybe not in the top 5 QBs currently.   If he is he’s #5.

Respectfully disagree…besides the Bills? HOFers Elway, Marino, Esaison and Moon were all playing at the same time in that conference, all of whom minus Moon reached the Super Bowl as well.  Don’t forget the gauntlet defenses the Steelers always threw at you, replete with HOFers there as well…I could go on.

This is a fair point. Bills would have been home as favorite for AFC title game…Vs Cincinnati.

Fair points.  The NFC was the better conference though and there wasn’t a juggernaut like KC though today. Redskins team was historically good in ‘91 and the joke that the Cowboys/49ers winner in the NFC Championship game was the real Super Bowl.

The Bills were the Chiefs of their day (minus the rings) - the insurmountable AFC obstacle to getting to the SB.

There’s so much more than QB to win a SB and it takes luck too. Defense and special teams have killed us.

I’ve said it before, i would take the combo of Jim Kelly/Josh Allen any day of the week over Steelers greats Bradshaw and Roethlisberger.

And they have six Super Bowls and we have zippy.

One thing that drives me nuts is Josh should have a MVP. It was just Rodgers had an unbelievable season statistically that kept Josh from achieving that. That season that Josh didn’t get the MVP was more impressive than any of Lamar’s MVP seasons. Timing is everything unfortunately and I don’t think anyone who has closely watched either QBs would ever choose Jackson over Josh.

Around 15 minute mark, they talk about Allen. He refused to compare Josh to Kelly. But Sal spoke for him eventually. And I think this is how league wide, players and analysts all feel about the same on Allen. You don't get to be compared to the greats until you bring the Bills to the Superbowl. I'm pretty sure Allen is aware of that as well, fair or not, that being more of a team thing than individual achievements. Many ranked Joe Burrow ahead of Allen largely because of his Superbowl appearance never mind he had all star WR corp and running backs then.

Andre also said this year Allen became a "complete Quarterback." People may think that unlike Jackson, Allen always have the ability to run and pass and do BOTH very well. Well, I think Andre is seeing what we are seeing this year; Allen's decision making is quite a step up from what he had done in first 6 years in NFL. Allen was very raw entering in NFL, top level arm, underrated running ability, and quick wit (Beane noticed that, which to me is very important for someone needing to make snap decision under pressure). He had to work thru his mechnics issue, learning how to read defenses (Allen admitted his first year he's pretty much lost). He's finally reaching the stage of refining his football decision making process. Prior to this year, some of Allen's poor decisions resulted INTs, but some of them also resulted in big plays, unbelievable plays due to his physical ability. This year I saw very few poor decisions from him, and we are seeing a much more steady flow of the offense over all.

Love all of this 💯 The thing I don’t want is to be saying in ten years.. if 2026 JA17 was in the 2023 playoff game vs the Chiefs he gets the job done on that last offensive drive. I desperately want to see this whole thing come together. God, just once..!

They were pretty tough mentally back then. Little bit of Chiefs with the innovative drive play calling in a way that the defense was two steps behind—it’s of course nothing revolutionary now, but was; and the Bengals grit, I’d say. The 90 Bills had a tough ass LB core and some wild hair Dlinemen. But yes, the Chiefs rock them after 90. The Bengals were better in 88 than in 21. My opinion. 90s Bills would get the Bengals. I mean Marino is better than Burrow. Cincy would hang in the weather though.

Josh is better in this era that Jim was in his.

Jim was the general of one of the most effective and innovative offenses back then. He was a top 2 or 3 qb and yes, WON four straight AFC championships.

lol… yes if smaller QBs like Steve young, John Elway, Doug Flutie, Randall Cunningham and the many more I could list over the league’s history could survive, I’m guessing the 6’5 250lb Josh Allen would be fine.

Not to ruin your assault on not knowing what you’re taking about, but three of those guys played 15 years, and Josh will surpass them in rush attempts this season. The fact that you brought up Doug Flutie is a double down on talking about things your clearly don’t know.

Such a different era, clearly Josh has more talent, but the training, nutrition and everything else is so much better.  Just the fact that you had the ability to kill the QB and not having illegal contact. It totally changes the game. I don't know how much better Josh would do in that era. If he would even survive. I know that people who just assume that's an easy question to answer are not correct.

I can get on board with that

The NFL instituted the "slide rule" in 1985 which protected QBs that were running. Jimbo played from 1986 till 1996 so that protection was already in place.

Do I think Josh would run as much if he played during the Kelly era? Maybe not because QBs simply did not run the ball as much back then. It had not yet become part of the game. But if he did he would have been able to slide to avoid taking excessive hits.

To your point about the difference in eras, the bigger rule change came in 2018 with the addition of the "body weight" provision to roughing the passer. That was Josh's first year so he has been the beneficiary of that rule change.

Perhaps Jimbo's greatest asset was his toughness but IMO Josh takes a back seat to no QB in that category. Josh's best comparable in terms of size is Ben Roethlisberger who like Josh is 6'5" and 240 lbs. Big Ben played 17 years in the NFL.

If you are who your record says you are…, then JK has to be ranked higher than JA,

Four consecutive AFC division championships ,  and four consecutive superbowl appearances,

Interesting point and one that could be viewed a few different ways:

  • Jimbo was 101-59 in the regular season for a 63.125% winning percentage. He was 9-8 in the playoffs (52.94%) and 110-67 combined (62.15%).
  • Josh is 70-32 in the regular seasons for a 68.63% winning percentage. He is 5-5 in the playoffs (50.00%) and 75-37 combined (66.96%).

So this is just another way of comparing the two.
