Odds are they activate Shavers for Cooper as he was taking reps with the first team offense in practice.

Good. We're thin right now, in good shape in the division and you get a chance to see if dudes worth keeping around.

At this point he needs to be up to the task of filling in when several injuries happen ahead of him. If he can't be salvageable as a callup at WR5, he's wasting a roster spot.

The flip side is this is the way you win yourself into the McD ring of honor. Earn your salt and you'll get every chance to keep your playing time as he gets more

This is why it’s a confusing move.

ImWith Coleman gone, you’d think they’d be eyeing more of a boundary WR to fill the role. It’s possible they are doubling down or speed and YAC ability thinking they may be needing to take a lot of underneath stuff the next few weeks.

Whoever they call up from the practice squad I imagine will be a boundary WR.  Probably Tyrell Shavers.

Jalen Virgil, WR
School: Appalachian State |  Conference: Sun Belt
College Experience: RS Senior |  Age: 22
Height / Weight: 6’1” / 205 lbs
Projected Draft Status: Rounds 5-6

College Statistics

Player Overview

One of the top sprinters in the state of Georgia during his high school years, Virgil was a lightly regarded football prospect going into college, recruited by several smaller schools in the southeast. In 2017, he played in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman, leading the team in yards per reception (18.2). His sophomore season, he was recognized by Street & Smith as the Sun Belt’s “fastest receiver.” He again played in all 13 games, averaging 14 yards per reception.

In 2019, Virgil expanded his role, getting involved in special teams and averaging 36.5 yards per kickoff return. He also took part in rushing game, accruing 571 all purpose yards, and garnering an appearance on Bruce Feldman’s annual “College Football Freaks” list for his athleticism:

A legit track guy who is a repeat honoree on the Freaks list. The 6-1, 210-pound junior ran a non-wind-aided 10.30 to finish runner-up in the 100m at the 2019 Sun Belt Outdoor Championships. That explosiveness is also reflected in his jumping ability. He verticals 40.5 inches and broad jumped 10-11 this off-season. He’s also really powerful, benching 405 — almost double his body weight. Virgil’s been a big-play guy for App State, catching 37 passes for 602 yards in his first two seasons in the program.

Incoming vent:

Unless your name is Eli Ankou 😔

He only has one more call up and we’re playing a team expecting to pound the rock.  Then KC, SF, LAR and Detroit-  all teams known to pound the rock.  Who knows what they plan on doing with these guys going forward, but I’m really hoping he doesn’t lose snaps over these weeks to the anti run stopper Jordan Phillip.

end rant

Seemed like he would’ve been a lock to play this week.

I am good with it. He can stretch the field. He’s a high 4.3 - low 4.4 guy. I still think field stretching is necessary moving forward. The Bills have been creative but have an ungodly amount of throws within 5 yards of the LOS. Marcel Louis-Jacques tweeted last week that 32 of 39 throws were 5 air yards or less!! It worked. They’ve been good at stretching the field horizontally but still need to stretch it vertically. Virgil is a part-time player but can add an element.

It worked in part because the Fish linebackers suck. If they'd played Baltimore last week I'm not sure we get a different result to the first time.

Decent size.  Strong.  Very fast.  The guy seems to have the physical tools.
