This is a familiar technique, and we shouldn't be surprised. Because of the continuity that exists in Buffalo, which includes continuity on the defensive scheme, the Bills can bring back former player and plug them in almost immediately. It's what we've the Chiefs do with Kareem Hunt and with whichever receiver they brought back late last season.

If a guy who returns can't cut it, they'll figure that out soon enough and deal with it. In the meantime, they've live warm bodies who are up to speed almost immediately.

So I don't know what the Bills thinking is, but Jordan Phillips is a 1TDT and Quinton Jefferson is kind of a "tweener",  guy who can play both DE and DT.

I'm not sure that either would be a good replacement for Smoot at DE.

Due to Carters injury, I think Smoot was to be used more as an interior pass rusher than a DE.  Or at least split his snaps between the two spots.  With von back, he can assume more snaps and toohill/Solomon getting DE4 snaps.  I think groot is a 75% snaps kind of guy and our DE4 doesn’t have to play as many snaps as in the past.

I also think Jefferson can be used as a DE on 3rd and 4th and 1.

I think JP is a 1T in size and stature.  Not so much in play style.  Hopefully he can collapse a few pockets

So if I’m right about Jefferson being the Smoot replacement, Phillips is the Carter replacement. Which is fine I guess. I don’t mind the vibes Phillips brings (most of the time), but his days of being a plus player are probably over.

Side note: DL overcommit much?
1. Rousseau

2. Epenesa

3. Miller

4. Solomon

5. Toohill

6. Oliver

7. Jones

8. Johnson

9. That rookie we signed from Atlanta’s practice squad

10. Jefferson (eventually back to Smoot)

11. Phillips (eventually back to Carter)

With Ankou and K. Johnathan also on the practice squad. I get that they like to rotate, but this is a lot. Seems to me like they need to either start getting something out of the guy whose name I don’t remember, or just cut him outright and use that roster spot for someone who can contribute. It’s bizarre to have him as a healthy scratch while also calling up and giving significant snaps to Ankou.

Also, not saying I could do better, but are we ever going to find a backup 1-tech who can play?

Don’t want to pull anything….on the first day.

I thought they are allowed to only have wrist injuries... Is his wrist taped ? 🙂

It has been suggested a few times in this thread that Jefferson IS in fact a direct Smoot replacement.

And it has been understood for a long time that Phillips, despite his absolutely massive frame, is actually much better suited to play 3TDT. He is a penetrator all the way. He has spent time at 1T for sure, but it's not his natural position.

Funniest thing I read today was Phillips was on IR with a wrist injury this year. It was destiny for him to be back with the Bills this season.

Forget Ronnie Lott, someone's gonna actually lose a whole hand at this rate.

I would assume they are thinking of Logue as a higher upside player than Ankou but maybe he's not ready or doesn't know the scheme as well. I assume the idea is that Logue would be the Austin Johnson replacement for next year if he can develop into a contributing player. I suspect that this is a short term solution and you will see someone let go after the bye and Carter is back.

Smoot at 260 is too light to play any DT position. Phillips at 335 does have the girth to be a feux 1T at least until he gets hurt.  Size wise this team really doesn't have a 1T on the roster.

16 sacks over the past 3 seasons.

Think we have more of a need for a true 1T, but I like the signing.

I was surprised at the amount of Jets fans who were clamoring to have Jefferson back and are now pissed at Douglas for allowing us to grab him.  Even if he does nothing for us at least he ticked off Jets fans which is always a net positive.

Buffalo should be an attractive destination for guys who want to play meaningful football in January. That’s not happening with the Jests…

Lots wrong here-

I’m not saying Smoot is a run stopping DT.   Smoot has already played some DT in Buffalo, He moves inside in passing downs. similar to how Rousseau had done the same in the past (Rousseau is 3 lbs heavier).  Smoot played mostly 4 and 5 technique in Jacksonvilles 3-4 system.  He is certainly capable of swinging inside on passing downs 💯

yes- Phillips is 335 lbs-  he certainly has the physical attributes of a 1T.  He’s just bad vs the run.  Always has been minus a handful of starts.  He’s a penetrator.

Jones, at 317 is plenty big enough for a 1T.  I think maybe you’re confusing a 1T with a 0T (3-4 NT)

Been busy with work, did they announce what they are doing with Ankou?  I prefer him to both of them.  He’s better vs the run and won’t get injured after 2 plays.

I do like adding more big bodies to help limit Daquan and Eds reps a bit.  I’d just prefer it it weren’t at the expense of ankou

Ankou's been a PS call up so he'll likely remain on the PS unless another DT goes down with an injury. I don't find it a surprise we added two guys who've played in the system before so should be easier transition than someone who had not.

I’d just prefer Ankou on the 53 and JP on the PS.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen spoke about his team's decision to bring back two familiar defensive tackles.

Quote

“Big bodies, number one,” Allen said. “The familiarity with what we’ve got going on here in Buffalo and type of men that we have in this locker room. They’ve been playing really good football; I think Q had 10-plus sacks last year, if I recall correctly. I know Phil hasn’t been playing much this year with an injury, but glad to have those two back. They’ve been, again, good locker room guys for us, and they’ll make an immediate impact on the field.”

I was excited about Jefferson’s great 2023 until I found the following

from ESPN:

Jefferson recorded a career-high six sacks and had 34 tackles before his season ended prematurely in December, when he suffered tears to both sides of his groin, each tear requiring surgery. At the end of the season, he expressed optimism about his chances of returning for OTAs in the spring.

224dESPN NFL experts

Jefferson played only 469 defensive snaps, his lowest total since 2017 with Seattle, but that can be attributed to the Jets' deep defensive line. Typically, they rotated eight or nine players on game day.

There was one alarming trend with Jefferson: Despite his sack production, the Jets allowed a 108.4 passer rating when he was on the field, compared to a 55.6 mark when he wasn't in the game, according to Next Gen Stats. That's by far the biggest discrepancy among the team's defensive linemen.

I've seen him move much faster than that, but it is usually on those plays where he injures himself 😆

I mean take it whatever way you want but it appears Ankou isn’t too pleased with being passed up.

Can’t say I blame him entirely. He’s been here for years on the PS, has put in a lot of back and forth when the Bills needed him. Came back after being let go by another team. He’s stuck on the Bills PS and been a good teammate and player for us.

Yeah I’m pretty bummed about this too.  Can’t imagine how he feels.  Dude waits and waits, gets a chance, balls out and is replaced by 2 guys that he sat behind in the past….and he’s likely better than both.  I feel bad for the kid.  He deserves the next game.
