Maybe you're right.

But Beane is the guy who signed him and he doesn't seem like the type to promise a starting role.

He was penciled in as starter.  Beane I believed said somewhere he envisioned him starting.  Maybe Mcdermott.  Either way Hamlin got every snap in the spring and Summer.  Come week 1 too short a runway.  Hamlin hasn’t slipped up all year and has been consistent as player.  Imo Hamlin has earned the spot.  It is not peewee football.  It is pro football.  Edwards is paid as a reserve spot starter.  Due to availability he was passed on the depth chart.  Hamlin has more equity with the franchise and his play hasnt warranted benching.  Edwards feeling a way about it is crazy to me and probably is why he bounced around a bit.

Maybe the Bills told him he was starting. Then after the injury he didn’t get his spot.

I highly doubt that. Beane doesn't promise starting roles to low-tier contract players. He tells them they'll come in to compete. Somehow Edwards got it in his head that he has earned a starting job out the gate despite being a backup as recently as last year.

Joe Marino put out some interesting info on today's Locked On Bills. He said two weeks ago a source told him that Mike Edwards was very unhappy that he had to compete for a starting job, he had a bad attitude about it, and he was apparently giving low effort in practice. That's why he was a mainstay on the inactive list. So this whole thing has been brewing for a while.

It sucks that a veteran who's spent his career competing for playing time suddenly decided he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. What a loser, honestly. This is why you can't always judge coaching decisions without knowing what's going on behind the scenes.

Sure you can. Some posters do it all of the time.

Did he get a fair shot in your eyes? I don’t remember him ever rotating with Hamlin.

Even if he was told to compete, he never got an opportunity.

Sounds like he had a bad attitude from the start and didn't put forth enough of an effort for the coaches to give him a shot after he recovered from his injury. Opportunities are earned, not gifted.

When? He missed all offseason and preseason.

Especially here. McD had a little well humoured dig at the media on that post game on Sunday with regards to the rookies getting time and making an impact in the game. "I will play rookies but they have to earn it. I will always put the players who earn it on the field because if I don't the rest of the team sees that" or words to that effect.

He certainly did rotate when he was healthy which was not much.  In fact at one point it looked like he would be the starter.  He was given every opportunity when he was healthy.  Once the season started, and once he was finally healthy, it was too late.

Where was it written he had a bad attitude? And didn't put forth effort? Are you just speculating?

In order to rotate he needed to be active - when was he active?

If I remember he was the starting safety in camp until he got hurt. Obviously that is just training camp though.

He definitely wasn't happy not playing.

And that's a bad thing?

Of course it can be disruptive.

The whole thing just doesn't feel right because Hamlin just isn't that good. Does Hamlin get graded on a curve because of his past? Or is he really just better than Edwards?

Doesn't matter now. Hopefully Hyde is signed to the PS soon.

The starter to pair with Bishop next year is probably not on the roster right now.

He didn't rotate with Hamlin during the pre-season because of injury.  Once the season started, the job was Hamlin's to lose.  And he hasn't lost it.

The Bills letting Edwards walk says to me that he's fallen off the depth chart for whatever reason, because otherwise why wouldn't they keep him in case of injury?

If Joe Marino's info (via @HappyDays is correct, "bad attitude and low effort in practice" would be the reason for his fall.

Hamlin didn’t do anything to lose his job, but if it were a true fair competition then Edwards would’ve gotten some reps during games. He didn’t. Hamlin was treated like the clear number 1 safety from the start, never leaving the field. We’ve seen McDermott rotate CBs in a competition, he didn’t do it here.

I can understand why he wouldn’t be happy. He said all the right things up until the season started. Maybe when the season started and he wasn’t playing he decided he wanted out and that’s when the bad attitude started.
