A safety helps take away the deep ball and helps against the run. If we don't shore up the run game, it also leaves us vulnerable to play action. Most of the top teams in the league right now have strong rushing attacks, and that will matter if you want to win a SB this year. On a good day, an elite DE will get you 2-3 sacks, and maybe none of those are game changing. A safety can be a contributor on every play.

We somewhat agree, we need TWO DL. A DT and DE.  I will stand on my argument we had two top level safetys and didn't make a super bowl. Shore up the line, and the Secondary gets better.

ZaDarius wanted to go to Detroit to play against his former team (Vikings). The Browns may not have a QB, but they've got plenty at DE.  Z is under contract next season, but was not likely in the Browns plans due to his contract and the other DE talent they have. They sent him where he wanted to go and got something for him. I know they were looking for a 4th. A late 5th and future 6th with a future 7th back equals a very late 4th to very early 5th. The Lions get a good DE and have the option for him to stick around next season while Hutch gets back to form - and they didn't overpay. So a pretty fair trade for both sides.

It's also possible/likely that the Browns were good trading him to the NFC but not the AFC.

They weren't top-level for the last couple years, and we had other problems before that. They weren't the reason we failed.

An elite DT who can disrupt the run and collapse the pocket would also be a much bigger asset than a DE. You need to impact every play, not just have vanity sacks. The Bucs sacked Mahomes 4 times yesterday but they still lost, because they let him go for 77% anyway and let Hunt grind them down.

You're looking for a higher ceiling out of our defense when I think our floor is way too low.

I agree with this 100%. BUT, as long as McDermott is going to sit in Nickle most of the time with light DL, Light LB's we aren't going to cut it. I spoke with my Twin  Brother separated at birth Rich and he agrees, We need to go BIG at DL and LB and be able to apply pressure from the inside out while being able to defend the run. What I wouldn't give right now for Sam Adams and Pat Williams to be starting at DT for us. Both the Baltimore and Houston games would be much different

Bills need a run stuffing DT more than a DE imo. I'm not sure the Browns are willing to trade Garrett either

The Bills can't afford Garrett. Pipe dream him landing here. Azeez Ojulari from the Giants make sense as making little money and be an UFA after this season. I've seen Chase Young mentioned by other fans which makes sense since his cap number much lower than Garrett.

We need both and safety  if we really want to compete for a SB , but will get none and will get bounce in the playoffs as we always do

Teams usually prefer to trade out of the conference if all else is equal. I do not know how much that factored into this trade. The part about Z preferring to go to Detroit comes from someone who speaks with the players and agents. I posted that info about a week ago.

Heard Beane is holding out to trade for DT Olaf Kölzig

My sources have indicated that as well, but supposedly he is not willing to part with C Olli Jokinen so no deal has been consummated

Equipment manager going batty over trying to find an umlaut.  Further, the Bills are fined by the league for having a player with an umlaut in their name. 🙁

This is gold.  Thanks for confirming

Yes, and this week’s game will be interesting to watch.  Remember 3 years ago when Jonathan Taylor ran for 185 yards and scored 5 TDs?   If he runs wild again, we’re in trouble.  Derrick Henry and Achane this week already gouged this defense.

We need both, but YES we need to pressure with the front 4 and actually hit/Sack the QB. Not just flail arms at them.

Oh stop, don't you know there's many posters more excited about qb hits & pressures than actual sacks.

The problem is those type of bigs guys are found only at the top of the draft and we haven't drafted in that zip code for many years now.

on the flip side, this same defense stopped Walker,  Pollard and Connor.

A first won’t even get them a returned phone call. The pieces required to obtain Garrett would be beyond costly. I’d love to have him here, but that’s not an option

Especially a first from the Bills, who will draft near the bottom of each round (or, wouldn't it be nice, last in each round).

Whether the Bills D can stop the run has a lot more to do with the ability of the opposing O line, and not as much to do with the RBs themselves.  The Bills really struggle when the opposing O line can consistently make holes in our line.
