Who is the best and most likely player the Bills can get to help stop the run in the next two days?

But what about a younger player like Dexter Lawrence? Do you think he has the same kind of upside as Garret, as far as being a guy who could upend offenses on a regular basis?  And at 26 years old. But that also would seem to make him a much tougher, if not impossible, guy to get.

The Giants just gave Dexter a 4 year  90 million deal in May.  There is no reality in which they trade him.  He leads the league is sacks and is a core piece of their franchise.

Seems like a bargain, will be.

 

But hey, if the Giants were inexplicably dumb enough to pay what is clearly a career backup QB 40 million a year, they may be dumb enough to get rid of Lawrence too.

The offense needs to get blown up - but defensively they have a bunch of talent.  You move players on expirings who aren't a part of the plan going into 2025.  Ojulari maybe could move because of his contract.

As TJ talked about after the game, the Bills aren’t built to stop the run and they actually encourage teams with great WRs to run more.  It’s part of the game-plan.  To take away the deep and outside plays.  They are the best team against the run with light boxes.  It’s just how they want to play.  Do wish they were better of course but the design is to give yards underneath.

i think we really need pass rush.  a sack or forced bad throw vs tua in the first half woulda made the game totally different.

 

our lbs and to a lesser extent tj didn't have good games vs the run, but tb is coming off of an injury and i've championed him before, but dorian's knee is either bugging him worse than we thought or maybe he's just very good.

 

our d has such a high level of difficulty for LBs, they have to see and smash the run fit super fast, and make the tackle, or else we get what baltimore and miami did to us.  a milano christmas miracle would be the biggest gain, but who knows.

The Giants have some real nice pieces that we can probably pick off. They are going nowhere because of their complete zero at QB. We have a good relationship with them obviously. Maybe we can get a friends and family deal

Eli Ankou - He's already on the team and therefore affordable.

 

Running a nickle Defense on nearly every play isn't a recipe for stopping the run. Against the Colts and Jonathan Taylor, I think I'd throw some 5-1-5 Defense in there with 3 DTs. If nothing else it would confuse them.

 

Either that or score early and often and force them into a Flacco passing fest.

As long as Daboll is still part of that team, he will never do business with McD. He's more than willing to take guys we've released but he's never giving Derm anything. These guys hate each other.

Who knows what happens next year as far as the overall quality of the team.  We can expect it be very good, again, but you never know. One injury can wreck a team.

 

We see what we have now, the progression, the quality, and the potential. 

 

To me, it is all about now, this year.  Don't mortgage the future, but explore every possibility to make the team better, to eliminate weaknesses.  Now.

 

 

On offense, it could have been argued we were one player (a receiver) away. 
 

I don’t think we can make the same argument on defense. Further, trading for players mid season seldom works, especially when you have basically zero cap flexibility to make the trades work. We’d wind up paying out the nose for anyone good enough to justify a trade in order to have the relinquishing team eat their salary. 
 

This season has exposed bigger picture issues with our defense imo. We’re built to defend the pass. This worked well with offenses trending more to 11 personnel, throwing more from spread, etc. Offenses are now countering this type of defense with more run based schemes.
 

What does that mean for the future of our cover 2 zone? Can it be fixed with more bulk interior DL? Do we need bigger LBers and/or safeties that have more freedom to patrol LOS? Do we need DBs with better man skills? Is McD playing dead and saving actual scheme adjustments for playoffs?

 

I just don’t think we know enough yet to justify spending what it would take to bring in a difference making along the line, and if I had to guess, even someone like Myles Garrett (who would definitely help) wouldn’t be enough to lift this ill-matched defensive unit to a point of real contention. 
 

This was always going to be a transition year. Unless, Mahomes, Lamar, and Goff all go down, it’s very likely going to still be a transition year regardless of what we do.

I’d love to see what this defense can look like with 58 42 and 43 all on the field at the same time. I know that means Johnson has to come off the field but we have to be willing to come off the Nickel sometimes. Teams know how to exploit it. You need to be willing to evolve

I think there has to be some way to mix it up and take #3 off the field and play one high safety with Rapp, leaving Taron as the extra box defender.  This wouldn't drastically change Taron's current responsibilities.  Shifting into 2-High probably would, as I can't recall Taron ever being a deep-hash defender.  Not every play, but it could be incorporated against run-heavy teams. 

 

They were creative last year when Milano went down, bringing Rapp in deep and moving Poyer to more of a LB role on obvious passing downs.  Cam Lewis is doing the same thing this season.

I don't know much about Tuttle,  but I'd be happy with either of the other 2.

That's great, but it will get us DESTROYED against Detroit, Baltimore and KC
