Mike, I’m betting you don’t know everyone in the county, and it’s in poor form to attempt to speak for everyone.

I guess on some level, the statement “…the squirrel was killed because it bit the DEC guy when he paid a visit…” should make this all sound really legit, but to me, it sounds kinda weird.

On the other hand, I can see a Geo Clooney blockbuster in the making.

You are correct I don't know all the people in the county but it is not being discussed on local social media and trust me this county is GOP dominated

Raccoons generally operate under the cover of darkness and cloak of secrecy, and even politically connected raccoons shy away from social media.  Admittedly, I’m uncertain about squirrels.

Pnut had about 500k followers, of which I assume almost all are teen/younger people. To those people it might matter but I have no idea how the population is spread out across the country, regardless of who really cares "that much" this is a definite overreach of government unless there is something the government has not released yet.

I believe NYS Law is you can't house wildlife in your home. They did and someone reported it (for some reason).  DEC guy gets bit by the squirrel and wasn't vaccinated hence it had to be put down so it could be tested for rabies.

I appreciate you are not the arbiter of wildlife but the squirrel lived with the dude for 7 years, only a dope argues the squirrel is wildlife anymore. I though again point out touching a "wild" animal without gloves makes the DEC employee the problem.

I agree that it is highly unlikely that the squirrel carried a dormant virus for 7 years. But this is where the raccoon comes in, which they took in just a few weeks/months ago. Rabies is very easily spread between different species.

Every one of you, regardless of political affiliation should care about this.

It's an absolutely egregious example of government overreach. Yeah this time it was just a squirrel. But remember once it was illegal to be gay too (or at least engage in what may have been loosely defined as *****). Given the same logic, it would have been okay to bust into a gay dude's house and rough him up. It's using some statute or codified law to abuse people. It's anathema to what our constitution and country is about.

A friend’s daughter got caught up on a local school roof quite a few years ago with a group of other kids.  No vandalism, no silliness beyond getting caught.

The matter was addressed by having her appear in town court, assignment to do some community service work, soup kitchen downtown for 3 or 4 weekends.  In addition, the dept of social services/police stopped by the parent’s house on a couple of occasions to check things out—walked around, checking for guns and whatever else they check for.

Consequences are fine, overreach is not.

Thankfully, I was never pinched for doing the same thing to retrieve tennis/baseballs after practice with the kids.
